Parafoudre.

Pour mieux expliquer pourquoi de faibles intervalles dair sont désirables si une con- eentration de la d#,chi-ur--e doit être empêchée, il est nécessaire;
cube, pourvu que hi conclactibilité ther mique en soit suffisante pour empêcher un chauffage local des surfaces de contact et empêcher, par -conséquent, la formation d'un arc électrique.A la place -des matières non- métalliques, on pourrait aussi se servir(le métaux;
Surge arrester. Common surge arresters are generally of two kinds - One of the with spark or interval type with sparks and the other with action chemical in nature. to 6 spark arresters generally have two electro-formed cylinders, plates or discs of brass, graphite etc., separated from each other by an air gap and electrically. isolated from each other. In some cases the air gap is shunted by a resistor, and in some examples an appropriate dielectric, such as mica, is used instead of the air gap, such as mica. the electrodes.
These different types of surge arresters have many drawbacks, given in particular that it is difficult to establish - constructs which f have successfully # under all conditions.
We have also #, already proposed a surge arrester comprising ides alternating blocks of metal sheets or films and of graphite or other material not fusing with the metal of the films, intermediate mica sheets being interposed between aces blocks .
The metal generally used for metallic films has been aluminum, which. is an axiable metal -and consequently forms a # non-conductive co-ucIie # on its surface, # which is broken by the passage, of an abnormal voltage, the subsequent oxidation of Metal Tem6chant then 'i #tfe breaking.
Lactioude this lightning arrester is of chemical nature.
Unlike chemical surge arresters, lightning arresters do not simply de- discharge the abnormal voltage from a distribution line. of electrical power, but when they operate, they are a short circuit or low resistance path for the normal voltage of the worthy tmvaÀl .
The prevention of the formation of an arc at the electrodes of the clatear depends here on the elimination of this short-circuit at the end of a half-period. In large capacity installations, # - ,, ependamt, the quantities of power discharged by this short circuit are so great that the spark gaps are unable to switch off and

However, when the critical voltage is exceeded, the large number of minute air gaps at the adjacent faces of the discs rupture and the current passes freely and possibly uniformly over the entire area of the surfq # ec- s adja, c -entes of, -these disks.

Referring to, fig. 1, the line 1 is connected by a #conductor 2 and a circlip to arc. 3 au # p # ara, fetidre designated in its set by 4. This one #includes -a tubular box 5 in porcelain or other insulating material. having an interior ledge 6 to its bottom end.
This ledge serves as a support to a (, metal plate 7 connected by a conductor 8 to the earth., On the metal plate 7 are stacked # disks 10 of a material of high specific resistance, their number being sufficient to establish a surge arrester having the desired breakdown voltage.
A metal plate 11 is placed on the uppermost disk 10 and a conductor 12 attached to # this plate, leads to the, splitter à urc 3. A cover 13, generally of insulating material supporting a central hole for the passage of the conductor 12 is fixed in the the upper end of the box 5 and a spring 14 inserted between the cover,
the 13 and the plate It keeps the discs 10 in a fixed position with respect to each other. The, disks, while having fatces; smooth, have tiny alternating protrusions and hollows thereon so that, when put together, they fit together at relatively few points 16 and form between them # These relatively large 17 air intervals (Fig. 2).
While the voltage on the disks is low, leakage current can flow between the disks only at their key points ûonta, and 16. which are few in number and have a small passage section. Consequently, the resist-awe of the pa- burst to the passage of the current at a low volta.c is very high and no appreciable caurant is there. will pass under these conditions.
But, as shown in FIG. 3, when an air gap break occurs in bare or several places between the discs 10, as a result of an abnormal voltage -appliqu6, the break will span the entire disk surface, allowing the current to pass almost uniformly throughout the , width of the stitch pattern. The current density is kept low at all points, because the resistance of the disks opposes any #eoncentration 4th la,
decliarge and therefore no local heating occurs, thus preventing the #change of the discharge of a form called to incandescent "which requires a voltage brought up to maintain, to the uppelée faith-me, de- e 'har,
this to arc "which only removes a low vol- tage. It is understood that the air gaps shown in fig. 2 and 3 are grossly exaggerated.
Zn The curve shown to the figure 1. 4 gives, (111 its ordinates, the voltage., Der rupture cri volts for-small air gaps between each plates, the widths of these air intervals being given in cenIimètrc, ## by the abscissa,
s. It can be seen that the breaking voltage for small air gaps with most of the il'élertrocle-q materials is a minimum when the width of, these last c. 4 of about 0.001 vm, equal to about to mil.
Therefore, the air gaps necessary for the rupture should be from '/ ..> mil to approximately and after çiii. * Iii rupture has occurred. in pes points integer the disks, the. dump pw * # will be in places with greater separation between them.
In practice, with the materials used, it has been found that about 8 mil, (> where the actual niaxinium separation can be used, still maintaining. a die, übarge a incandescence ,.
As the proper functioning of the païa- lightning depends on said maintenance of the discharge in the state of incandescence and di, emp, ^ -, clieinc # iit (the an * arcing, it is indicated to e- xa- minate the conditions under which incandescence takes place.
Fig. 5 shows the volt-amperometric characteristic of a Miir interval for (le, weak currents, ordinates giving voltage and current.
It can be seen that for very weak currents for which there is a weak heating in the cathode, a d (', - incandescence charge is established, as is evident, by the upper curve, which requires more than 350 volts to be maintained. A the siiifi, from the heating of the electrodes, the discharge elianges rapidly from the state of incandescence to </ B> the arc state,
as shown by the lower curve, a state which exio, c a relatively low voltage. Z, usually below 50 volts, to be maintained.
The para-lightning described precisely prevents the formation of an arc -after the rupine, because, if an are is formed, the voltage ZD necessary to maintain it is relatively low, thus allowing the normal voltage ide < B> the 11011, to maintain Varc. By forcing the arc # to re-start over the entire the surface of the discs, it],
heating of the latter is avoided and it is possible to maintain the to incandescent discharge at all times. This distribution of the current is effected by the use of electrodes of relatively high specific resistance, since, under these conditions, any tendency of the discharge to -concentrate is -concreted. by the ohmic resistance of the small section of passage offered to the, de-eliar ,, "e si she wanted to concentrate there.
To better explain why small air gaps are desirable if a concentration of d #, chi-ur - e is to be prevented, it is necessary ;
to -consider the characteristics of the voltage-current density of the different parts giving rise to incandescence.
The fi,) -. 6 shows the form of a largely amplified incandescent discharge. A the electrode 18, < / B> which is the cathode, we find a very-small dark space, known as, cathode dark zone ", corresponding in length or to l 'minimum rupture air interval shown in fi, (Y. 4. then # comes the to glow zone 9-1 -of the cathode, also relatively small length, about 4 to 5 mils, then comes the dark space die Faraday 22 and, finally.
against the electrode 9, the positive incanflescent column 23 is considerably longer in length.
Much of the voltage to maintain the incandescence state is concentrated around the dark area of cathode 20, a voltage which, upon increasing & density of, current tends to to rise, that is, the voltaic-current density curve is natural to to rise. The rest of the voltage is consumed in the positive column 2) 3 which increases or decreases in length as the electrodes are moved away or closer to each other.
The voltage in the positive column 23 goes inversely to l, a., Density of eourint, -so that the voltage-current density curve is, downward. It is understood that a form of discharge with a falling voltage-current density characteristic tends to concentrate since, in doing so, the voltage for a given current is reduced. As the surge arrester -described aims to reduce all the effects which tend to concentrate the discharge. the positive column will be. make it as short as possible by bringing the electrodes as close as possible.
It can therefore be seen that the use of short intervals of air and electrodes with considerable specific resistance makes it possible to maintain the discharge at the state of. 'incandescent requiring several # hundred volts for its maintenance. Such a discharge can be initiated at approximately the same voltage as is necessary to maintain the discharge incandescent.
In the type of arrester, described., With ordinary machining, the distance between the adjacent faces of the discs will vary from zero, or effective contact, to one mil or </ B > - near to the points of the greatest separation. There - y will therefore always have portions of the faces, - -de, opposite disks which will be separated by the corresponding distance,
at minimum e # cim potential. It follows that the pot-ential & rupture of the air gaps between the discs will always be the minimum burst potential for air and this is also approximately equal at the voltage required to maintain a short to incandescent discharge,
The # volt-ampere characteristic for a discharge at through an air gap having the minimum burst potential and with (the electrodes kept cold is as follows - Until this the rupture potential, which is also the vol tage necessary to maintain a to inranidescence discharge, is reached, no current flows; intense current flows at a voltage only slightly above the breakdown potential.
This is a similar feature to. as it -du aluminum electrolytic surge arrester.
Although superficially the surge arrester described has a certain resemblance to the resistance to, carbon column, it differs from it in several essential points. In the surge arrester described, a material of high specific resistance or a material having a relatively high resistance at the contact points is employed, while the resistance to column of carbon is. made of low strength material. In the para lightning described, the pressure on the discs is kept constant, slums that in the resistance to carbon column the pressure is brought to vary.
The surge arrester described func. bursts at air-slum intervals that in carbon column resistance, bursting is avoided.
The construction described # of a surge arrester is moreover extremely simple and reliable in operation. Its costs of cl'eiitrei-icii are very low as well as the costs of fabrication-, ioli.
The invention is of course not limited to the construction shown. Further, the resistor material, which in Example 16 previously at a specific resistance of about 100 ohms per cubic centimeter, could have a different specific resistance, for example -about 25 ohms per -centi meter.
cube, provided that its thermal conclactibility is sufficient to prevent local heating of the contact surfaces and consequently to prevent the formation of an electric arc. A the place -of non- materials metallic, one could also use (the metals;
it is only necessary that the metal employed has a high thermal conductivity and a specific resistance sufficient to prevent the formation of an arcing and, that the counter-electromotive force developed at an abnormal voltage born. or not less than the voliaoe necessary to maintain a to incandescent decliarge.
