Abstract

The invention is related to methods and equipment that provide for automated image capture of all the exterior surfaces of a vehicle as it passes through an Entry/Exit or designated Portal. When the 360 Degree Vehicle Exterior Scanning System (VESS) detects a vehicle, the system will Scan User specified Vehicle Surfaces as it passes through the Entry/Exit/Portal. Exterior Surfaces scanned include at a minimum: Front End, Rear End, Drivers Side, Passengers Side, Hood, Roof, Cargo Area (Trunk). Underside of vehicle is capable/optional. License Plate is capable to be optionally captured for identification and transaction logging.
Cameras are mounted on Apparatuses at the designated Entry/Exit/Portal of the Scanning area. VESS are built specifically to be a stand-alone system and accommodate a plurality of IP video cameras, sensors and equipment. The Video is managed within the Apparatus on Camera and/or on an optional Storage Computer and/or transmitted remotely using wireless networks.
The VESS is capable to use stand-alone power utilizing DC Power Source(s) such as but not limited to; PhotoVoltaic, Fuel Cell, Deep Cycle Battery. If available, local AC power is used and could be in combination with DC Power sources as backup.
The Cameras are high resolution IP Cameras capable of on-board storage and analytics.
Video is Viewable Live or Recorded by connecting to the supplied Wireless Network infrastructure using Commercial-of-the Shelf Apple, Android or PC
applications.

Description

360 Degree Vehicle Exterior Scanning System Description:
General Character:
This invention relates generally to the creation of a technical solution to automatically view and record the state and condition of all exterior surfaces of a vehicle at a specific point in time. By Definition it is a Vehicle Exterior Scanning System (VESS).
Specifically, as the vehicle's custody is passed from Party A of the first part, to Party B of the second part to document the condition of the exterior of the vehicle at the point of the transaction where custody is passed. The invention relates to the assembly of a Portal of Equipment onto purpose-built Apparatuses for the containment and operation of Commercial-of-the-Shelf IP
Cameras and the storing and transmitting of video signals for live and recorded video evidence gathering thereof. The VESS can be installed in a fixed location for continuous daily use or is also designed to be easily disassembled into sub-sections and re-assembled requiring only hand tools for portable use at multiple locations/events.
Nature:
Video Management Systems (VMS), commonly known as Closed Circuit Television Systems (CCTV), historically are installed at a premises for security purposes to allow for live viewing and recording of criminal or inappropriate activity at that premise, such as a break-ins, internal theft or robbery event. CCTV can also be used for non-traditional (non-security) uses as an information gathering tool to which this invention is derived.
Vehicles are very expensive to purchase and as such are also expensive to repair. What this invention addresses is Claims for Damage or more specifically; False Claims for damage.
By example of Car Dealerships, when a customer drops off their car, there may be CCTV at the premises for security, but there may be only a single camera (if any at all) in the area of where the client drops off the car to the Dealership. Typically, a thorough examination of the exterior of the car is not done, let alone witnessed and agreed to by the client and dealer at the time of drop-off.
Automation of an irrefutable state of the exterior of the vehicle at the time of drop off¨ will 1) Deny a false claim of damage of pre-existing conditions
2) Confirm an actual claim if done after vehicle was dropped off Examples of industries that would benefit from VESS include but are not limited to; Vehicle Dealerships, Vehicle Rental Agencies, Valet Services, Vehicle Repair/Service Centers, Vehicle Storage Facilities, Vehicle Washes, Parking Lots, Vehicle Transport Services, Fleet Management, Freight Forwarding, Entry/Exits to Secure Facilities and more...

Before any embodiments of the invention are explained in detail, it is to be noted and understood that the invention is capable of other embodiments not described specifically herein and can be implemented in various ways and therefore not specifically describing the embodiment should not be regarded as limiting. In addition, it should be understood that embodiments of the invention include hardware, software and electrical components or modules that, for purposes of discussion, may be illustrated and described as if the majority of the components were implemented solely in hardware. However, one of ordinary skill in the art, and based on a reading of this detailed description, would recognize that, in one or more embodiment described, the electronic aspects of the invention may be implemented in software, for example: VMS ¨ Video Management Software, which is not part of the invention but is a required component to be operational as described.
As such, it should be noted that a plurality of hardware and software-based devices, as well as a plurality of different structural components may be utilized to implement the invention.
Embodiments of the Invention provide 360 Degree Vehicle Exterior Scanning that can be deployed at any location with minimal setup as video management, power, networking are pre-configured and are inclusive within the Apparatuses.
The VESS can be shipped and assembled on site with simple hand tools. Due to the physical footprint of the base of each Apparatus being approximately only one square foot of floor space they can easily be placed within the entry/exit/portal without obstruction of the vehicles.
Supplied Wireless Communication links between the System Devices and the Clients User Interface ensures ease of use. Utilities can provide real time status of the system health, provides situational awareness and command and control of the on-board cameras and network devices.
