Abstract

An umbrella pole is coupled to a railing post using a coupling assembly including a coupling body pivotally supporting a first movable body and a second movable body for clamping movement relative to first and second ends of the coupling body respectively. The first end of the coupling body and the first movable body define first and second jaws of a first clamp for clamping onto the railing post. The second end of the coupling body and the second movable body define first and second jaws of a second clamp for clamping onto the umbrella pole. The clamps are adjustable for use with a large variety of railings and umbrellas, while still supporting the umbrella securely relative to the railing.

Description

UMBRELLA POLE TO RAILING POST COUPLING ASSEMBLY
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a coupling assembly for coupling the pole of an umbrella to a railing post of a deck or balcony, and more particularly the present invention relates to a coupling assembly that can adjustably clamp onto a plurality of different poles and posts.
BACKGROUND
Decks and balconies are common structures used by various persons when seated outdoors. When seated outdoors, it is also common to make use of an umbrella to provide shade from the sun or protected the seated persons from precipitation. Typical umbrellas have a pole which must be secured to a large base to prevent the umbrella from tipping over under force of wind, but the base can take up lots of space on smaller decks and balconies that have limited availability of space.
United States Patent Application Publication No. 2007/0034758 by Bates provides one example of a deck rail umbrella stand that supports the umbrella pole on the railing about a deck; however, the stand has a defined socket to receive the umbrella pole so that the stand cannot accommodate different types of umbrellas.
Furthermore, the stand relies on being supported on the top rail of the railing and the pickets of the railing below the top rail so that the stand is not usable with a large variety of deck railings that may not have a similar top rail, or that may use panels or other structures in place of pickets.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a coupling assembly for coupling an umbrella pole to a railing post, the assembly comprising:
a coupling body including a first jaw of a first clamp supported at a first Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring to the accompanying figures, there is illustrated a coupling assembly generally indicated by reference numeral 10. The coupling assembly 10 is particularly suited for coupling the pole 12 of an umbrella to a rigidly supported post 14, for example the post of a railing alongside a deck or balcony or a fence post and the like.
The coupling assembly 10 generally includes a coupling body 16 which supports thereon (i) a first movable body 18 which is operable relative to a first end 20 of the coupling body to define a first clamp suitable for clamping onto the post 14 and (ii) a second movable body 22 which is operable relative to a second end 24 of the Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
7 coupling body to define a second clamp suitable for clamping onto the pole 12.
The coupling body 16 is formed from a flat rigid plate which is folded into the desired shape described in the following and which is retained in the desired shape.
More particularly, the coupling body includes a first arm 26 and a second arm 28 which are joined to one another at respective inner ends at a corner fold 30. The first arm extends from its inner end at the corner fold 30 towards the first end 20 of the coupling body along an axis lying perpendicularly to the second arm 28 which extends from its inner end at the corner fold 30 towards the second end of the coupling body.
An outer end portion of the first arm 26 is bent to form a first jaw 32 of the first clamp at the first end of the coupling body. The first jaw 32 has a clamping surface comprised of two faces 34 joined to one another at a fold lying parallel to the corner fold 30 such that the interior angle between the two faces 34 is slightly greater than 90 degrees. The outer face is shorter than the inner face of the clamping surface of the first jaw 32. The faces 34 of the clamping surface are oriented to face in a direction that corresponds to the direction that the second arm 28 extends from the first arm.
The second arm 28 includes a first mounting slot 36 formed therein at a location spaced along the second arm from the corner fold 30 while remaining in close proximity to the corner fold. The first slot 36 serves to support a pivotal connection of the inner end of the first movable body 18 on the coupling body as described in further detail below. The second arm 28 also includes a second mounting slot 38 formed therein at a location spaced further outward on the second arm from the first mounting slot. The second slot 38 serves to support a pivotal connection of the inner end of the second movable body 22 on the coupling body as described in further detail below.
The second arm 28 of the coupling body is flat and linear from the inner end at the corner fold 30 to the outer end of the second arm at the second end 24 of Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
8 the coupling body. An outer side of the second arm 28 defines thereon a first jaw 40 of the second clamp in which the outer side corresponds to the side of the second arm that faces outwardly opposite to the direction that the first arm extends from the second arm of the coupling body. The first jaw 40 of the second clamp thus defines a flat clamping surface thereon.
The first movable body 18 is also made from a flat rigid plate which is folded into a desired shape and retains the folded shape. The inner end 42 of the first movable body 18 includes a hook 44 formed thereon which fits into the first slot 36 to define the pivotal connection of the first movable body towards and away from the first jaw of the first clamp. The first movable body defines a second jaw 46 of the first clamp thereon towards the outer end of the first movable body.
A clamping surface of the second jaw is situated at the inner side of the movable body which faces towards the first jaw of the first clamp at the first end of the coupling body. The clamping surface of the second jaw 46 is similar to the clamping surface of the first jaw 32 in that the clamping surface again comprises two faces 48 joined to one another at a fold lying parallel to the corner fold 30. The faces 48 meet one another at an interior angle which is slightly greater than 90 degrees.
The fold between the two faces 48 of the second jaw 46 is substantially aligned with the fold between the two faces 34 of the first jaw 32 such that the generally concave clamping surfaces of the first and second jaws are suitable for clamping against diametrically opposing sides of a round post or against diametrically opposing corners of a square post.
The first movable body 18 further includes an arm portion extending between the inner end 42 of the first movable body and the second jaw 46 at the outer end in which the arm portion is slightly bent to define an inner portion 50 of the first Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
9 movable body nearest to the inner end of the first movable body and an intermediate portion 52 of the first movable body extending between the inner portion 50 and the second jaw 46. The inner portion and the intermediate portion are joined to one another at an interior angle facing the first arm of the coupling body which is slightly less than 180 degrees, for example in the range of 160 to 175 degrees. The angle between the intermediate portion 52 and the innermost one of the clamping faces 48 at the inner side facing towards the first arm 26 is slightly greater than 180 degrees, for example in the range of 185 to 200 degrees. In this manner, when the inner portion 50 is positioned in an outwardly diverging relationship with the first arm 26, the intermediate portion 52 the first movable body is more parallel to the first arm 26 than the inner portion 50 of the first movable body so as to be better suited for operatively connecting a first threaded fastener 54 between the intermediate portion 52 of the first movable body and a corresponding portion of the first arm 26 of the coupling body.
The first threaded fastener 54 communicates through corresponding apertures in the first arm 26 and the intermediate portion 52 of the first movable body.
For example, the first threaded fastener 54 may comprise a bolt having a suitable nut threaded onto the end of the bolt opposite the head so that tightening the threaded fastener functions to clamp the first movable body towards the first arm 26 of the coupling body and thereby clamp the first and second jaws of the first clamp towards one another. The first threaded fastener 54 is situated in the longitudinal direction of the first movable body so as to be located at an intermediate location between the pivotal connection of the inner end of the first movable body onto the coupling body on one side of the fastener and the clamping faces of the first and second jaws of the clamp at the outer end of the first movable body on the opposing side of the fastener.
The second movable body 22 is also made from a flat rigid plate which is Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
10 folded into a desired shape and retains the folded shape. The inner end 56 of the second movable body 22 includes a hook 58 formed thereon which fits into the second slot 38 to define the pivotal connection of the second movable body towards and away from the first jaw of the second clamp. The second movable body defines a second jaw 60 of the second clamp thereon towards the outer end of the second movable body.
A clamping surface of the second jaw 60 is situated at the inner side of the second movable body which faces towards the first jaw of the second clamp at the second end of the coupling body. The clamping surface of the second jaw 60 has a clamping surface that again comprises two faces 62 join to one another at a fold lying parallel to the corner fold 30. The faces 62 meet one another at an interior angle which is slightly greater than 90 degrees.
The second movable body further includes an arm portion 64 extending from the inner end 56 of the second movable body to the clamping faces 62 of the second jaw 60 formed on the second movable body. The arm portion 64 meets the innermost clamping face 62 at an interior angle of between 90 and 135 degrees.
The length of the arm portion 64 in the longitudinal direction of the second movable body is less than the corresponding length of each clamping face 62. In this manner, the second jaw can be positioned close to the first jaw of the second clamp to be suited for clamping onto smaller diameter objects in the second clamp than the first clamp.
The second movable body 22 further includes an outer end portion 66 extending longitudinally outward from the outermost clamping face 62 to define the second end of the second movable body. The outer end portion 66 includes a mounting aperture therein in alignment with a corresponding mounting aperture at the second end of the clamping body in the outer end of the second arm 28. In this manner, a second threaded fastener 68 can be mounted through the fastener apertures at the Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
11 outer end of the second movable body and at the second end of the coupling body. The second threaded fastener 68 is thus operatively connected between the second movable body 22 and the coupling body. For example, the second threaded fastener 68 may comprise a bolt having a suitable nut threaded onto the end of the bolt opposite the head of the bolt so that tightening the threaded fastener functions to clamp the second movable body towards the second arm of the coupling body and thereby clamp the first and second jaws of the second clamp towards one another.
The second threaded fastener 68 is situated in the longitudinal direction of the second movable body so as to be located further outward from the pivot axis of the corresponding pivotal coupling of the second movable body on the coupling body than the clamping surfaces of the first and second jaws of the second clamp.
More particularly, the clamping faces of the jaws of the second clamp are situated longitudinally between the pivotal connection at the inner end of the second movable body and the mounting of the second threaded fastener 68 at the outer end of the second movable body.
In use, two coupling assemblies 10 are typically provided together as a kit for mounting at vertically spaced positions along an umbrella pole for corresponding coupling at vertically spaced positions along a common post. Each coupling assembly 10 is assembled by inserting the hooks at the inner ends of the movable bodies into the corresponding slots of the coupling body so that the first clamp can be clamped and tightened about the post using the first threaded fastener and the second clamp can be clamped and tightened about the pole of the umbrella using the second threaded fastener. Varying the threaded fasteners allows each of the clamps to be secured adjustably about different diameters and different shapes of posts and umbrella poles.
The configuration of the first clamp having both jaws being generally Date Recue/Date Received 2022-04-22
12 concave allows the first clamp to be well-suited for clamping against opposing corners of a square post or opposing sides of a large diameter round post. The arrangement of the second clamp having a generally concave second jaw clamping against a flat first jaw enables clamping contact about a round pole at three circumferentially spaced locations to be well suited for clamping about umbrella poles that are smaller in diameter than the post.
The mounting of both first and second movable bodies on the second arm of the coupling body enables (i) a first length of the first movable body between the second jaw on the first movable body and the pivotal connection of the first movable body to the coupling body, to be greater than (ii) a second length of the second movable body between the second jaw on the second movable body the pivotal connection of the second movable body to the coupling body. This further allows the first clamp to accept posts therein which have a larger cross-sectional dimension than the umbrella poles received within the second clamp.
Since various modifications can be made in the invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
