Abstract

In a conventional musical instrument drums shell, the drum shell consists of one shell constructed via the gluing of several thin plies of various woods to create one solid shell. The problem with modern drum shell designs are they do not accommodate the ability to get the full resonance from the drum shell. Resonance being the prolonged sound from vibration and/or reflection of the drum. This invention provides an improvement with how a typical drum shell is allowed to resonate. It is comprised of an inner shell that is added to an existing drum shell. This invention provides the ability for the existing drum shell to fully resonate as the vibrations are able to travel freely between the existing drum shell and the newly added inner drum shell. This invention can be applied to all current drum shell designs.

Description

1 of 3 DESCRIPTION
1. Inner Drum Shell
2. This invention relates to the construction/design of musical instrument drum shells.
3. Current drum shells are comprised of one (1) drum shell with two (2) identical bearing edges. The drum shell is usually comprised of several plies of thin cuts of wood glued together to form a solid shell. The bearing edge is added to the edges of the top and bottom of the shell once the shell has been constructed. A problem with this process is the glue does not allow the separate thin sheets of wood to resonate fully. Resonance is the sound created via the vibration of the wood, when a drum skin is struck. This invention improves the resonance of an existing drum shell by adding a non-glued inner shell with bearing edges. This invention assists an existing drum shell to resonate to a greater extent creating a more full and appealing drum sound, than the shell was previously capable of creating.
4. The invention is an improvement over the currently utilized musical instrument drum shell design widely used in the musical drum making industry. The key to this improvement is the addition of an inner shell named the Sound Inhancement Ring (SIR). The SIR is designed to fit into the interior of an existing drum shell and is attached using the pre-existing drum shell lug screws on the existing drum shell. The SIR is not glued in place, only friction and the shell lug screws are utilized to keep the SIR attached. This factor is a key in the functioning of the SIR as it enables the SIR to resonate freely allowing sound waves and vibrations to penetrate between the SIR and existing drum shell, creating a much more resonant drum sound.

5. The attached drawings illustrate the design of the invention and how it can improve upon current drum shell designs. Figure (Fig.) 1 shows the original drum shell (outer shell) with the invented (SIR) inner drum shell. Fig. 2 shows a detailed view of the SIR
with a 90degree diagonal cut and a 30degree bearing edge (horizontal cut).
Fig. 3 shows the SIR attached to the other drum shell utilizing existing drum shell lug screws and the small space created, where the ends of the SIR join together. Fig. 4 shows the other shell with the 45degree bearing edge. Fig. 5 shows the SIR (inner shell) with the 30degree bearing edge. Fig. 6 shows the overall design added to an existing drum.
6. The invention was originally developed to be utilized with snare drum designs, but it has proven it has benefits to all drum designs. The invention is primarily applied to drum set designs and provides an advantage to snare drums, bass drums, tom-tom drums, lower tom-tom drums, gong drums and any other cylindrical-style drums.
Although invented for wooden drums shells, the SIR invention can be applied to acrylic, metal, plastic, fiberglass and carbon fiber drum shells.
7. The invention has been designed to be inserted into an existing drum shell.
Fig. 6.
The invention is designed to be two (2) inches shorter than the length of the original drum shell with a 30degree bearing edge on both sides of this shell. When inserted the invention will sit in the middle of the outer shell with a one (1) inch space at the top and bottom of the outer shell. Fig. 6 The bearing edge is angled into the outer shell as illustrated in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. Prior to inserting the invention, all the screws from the outer shell are removed and the invention is slid into place, after careful measurements have been taken to ensure the SIR fits inside the outer shell. The invention is attached in place using the previous holes and screws from the outer drum shell. It should be noted the invention is not a solid cylinder, but has a diagonal cut down the entire side Date recue / Date received 2021-11-04 3 of 3 of the shell. This assists with the insertion/fit inside the outer shell, as well as providing for better resonance between the outer shell and this invention. Once in place the original drum shell can be used as normal.

Claims (6)

1 of 1 "The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:"
1. In a drum shell, the combination of the outer/original drum shell and an inner drum shell comprised of wood, acrylic, plastic, metal, fiberglass and/or carbon fiber with a bearing edge, designed to be installed within an original drum shell.
2. The details included in claim 1 wherein the bearing edge, is located on each edge of the inner drum shell with a bearing edge angle between Odegrees and 90degrees.
3. The details included in claim 2 wherein the bearing edge faces in towards the outer/original drum shell.
4. The details included in claim 1 wherein the inner drum shell is cut diagonally, allowing the shell to be fitted properly within the outer/original drum shell.
5. The details included in claim 1 wherein the inner drum shell is fastened utilizing the existing holes and screws from the outer/original drum shell.
6. The details included in claim 1 wherein the inner drum shell is shorter in height then the outer/original drum shell by approximately two (2) inches.
