Abstract
A method of bridging an ongoing telephony communication that has already been established between first and second parties by a first telephony service provider to a first telephony device used by a third party and that receives its native telephony service from a second telephony service provider, comprises: receiving, at the first telephony service provider, a request from the first telephony device indicating that the first telephony device is to be connected to the ongoing telephony communication that has been established by the first telephony service provider between the first and second parties, where the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the first telephony device; and bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the first telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties.

[0003] When the user wishes to place a call or send a text or video message, the user's telephony device contacts a server or a gateway maintained by the IP telephony system over a public and/or private data network. The server or gateway then acts to provide the user with the requested communications services.
[0004] IP telephony systems can provide the same types of communications services as traditional telephony service providers that operate through a publically switched telephone network (PSTN), but at significantly lower costs. For this reason, many people have switched their residential and business telephony service provider from a traditional PSTN-based telephony services provider to an IP telephony service provider.

[0006] Generally, the only way to place international long distance telephone calls through an IP telephony service provider using a mobile telephone is to pre-pay for an IP telephony service that is separate and distinct from the carrier that provides the regular native telephony service to the user's mobile telephone. Once the user has prepaid for a certain amount of minutes, in order to place a telephone call using the IP telephony service, the user must engage in a cumbersome dialing procedure. In order to use the IP telephony service, the user may need to remember a username or account number, as well as a PIN or password.

Further, the user must engage in a separate financial transaction to obtain minutes of call time on the IP telephony service. Also, if the user has an account with an IP telephony service that is left with only a few minutes of talk time, the user may choose to not use the remaining minutes, meaning some of the money spent to acquire minutes of talk time on the IP telephony system will be lost.

sending a request to join the ongoing telephony communication that has been established between the first and second parties by the first telephony service provider, the request being sent to the first telephony service provider over a data network; and establishing a telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider so that the first telephony service provider can bridge the telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties, wherein the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the telephony device from which the request is sent.

[0028] In the following description, the terms VOIP, VolP (Voice over IP) system, VOIP telephony system, IP system and IP telephony system are all intended to refer to a system that connects callers and that delivers data, text and video communications using Internet protocol data communications.
[0029] As illustrated in Figure 1, a communications environment 100 is provided to facilitate IP enhanced communications. An IP telephony system 120 enables connection of telephone calls between its own customers and other parties via data communications that pass over a data network. The data network is commonly the Internet 110, although the IP telephony system may also make use of private data networks. The IP telephony system 120 is connected to the Internet 110. In addition, the IP telephony system 120 is connected to a first publicly switched telephone network (PSTN) 130 via a gateway 122. The first PSTN 130 may also be directly coupled to the Internet 110 through one of its own internal gateways. Thus, communications may pass back and forth between the first IP telephony system 120 and the PSTN

[0030] The gateway 122 allows users and devices that are connected to the PSTN 130 to connect with users and devices that are reachable through the IP telephony system 120, and vice versa. With this type of a configuration, all of the analog telephone devices 102a, 102b, 102c share the same telephone number assigned to the telephone adaptor 104.

[0033] In addition, a customer could utilize a soft-phone client running on a computer 106 to place and receive IP based telephone calls, and to access other IP telephony systems (not shown). In some instances, the soft-phone client could be assigned its own telephone number. In other instances, the soft-phone client could be associated with a telephone number that is also assigned to an IP telephone 108, or to a telephone adaptor 104 that is connected to one or more analog telephones 102.

Of course, alternate embodiments could utilize any other form of wireless communications path to enable communications.

receives a telephony communication setup request from an application for a second telephony service provider on a first telephony device that receives its native telephony service from a first telephony service provider, the setup request being received over a data network by the second telephony service provider that includes the extensions connection unit;
receives information from the first telephony device that specifies a calling party identifier that should be included in caller identification (ID) information that is sent during call setup; and establishes the requested telephony communication between the first telephony device and a second telephony device by sending caller ID information that includes the specified calling party identifier to the second telephony device.
Clause 9. The system of clause 8, wherein the calling party identifier that is included in the caller ID information sent to the second telephony device is a telephone number of the first telephony device.
Clause 10. The system of clause 8, wherein the calling party identifier that is included in the caller ID information sent to the second telephony device is a Date Recue/Date Received 2021-01-13 telephone number associated with a customer account maintained by the second telephony service provider.

A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by one or more processors of a first telephony device that receives its native telephony service from a first telephony service provider, cause the first telephony device to perform a method of setting up a telephony communication, the method comprising:
sending a telephony communication setup request from an application for a second telephony service provider on the first telephony device, the setup request being sent to the second telephony service provider over a data network;
sending, to the second telephony service provider, information specifying which of multiple calling party identifiers should be included in caller identification (ID) information that is sent to a second called telephony device during call setup; and establishing the requested telephony communication by interacting with the second telephony service provider.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of clause 12, wherein the method further comprises receiving, from a user of the first telephony device, an indication as to which of multiple calling party identifiers should be included in caller ID information that is sent to a called telephony device when a telephony communication is being established for the first telephony device.

obtaining, in response to receipt of the telephony communication setup request, an identifier that is one of associated with the first telephony device, assigned to the first telephony device or assigned to a software application on the first telephony device, the identifier being obtained from the software application on the first telephony device without user input or participation;
determining if the obtained identifier is valid; and setting up the requested telephony communication if the obtained identifier is determined to be valid.

means for determining if the obtained identifier is valid; and means for setting up the requested telephony communication if the obtained identifier is determined to be valid.

an extension connection unit that is part of a first telephony services provider and that receives a telephony communication setup request from a first telephony device that receives its native telephony service from a second telephony services provider, where the telephony communication setup request indicates that a user of the first telephony device is seeking to setup a telephony communication between the first telephony device and a second telephony device; and an authorization unit that is also part of the first telephony services provider and that obtains, in response to receipt of the telephony communication setup request, an identifier that is one of associated with the first telephony device, assigned to the first telephony device or assigned to a software application on the first telephony device, the identifier being obtained from the software application on the first telephony device without user input or participation, wherein the authorization unit also determines if the obtained identifier is valid, and wherein the extension connection unit sets up the requested telephony communication if the obtained identifier is determined to be valid.
Clause 30. The system of clause 29, wherein the extension connection unit receives the telephony communication setup request by receiving an incoming telephone call from the first telephony device.

sending, to the second telephony service provider, information specifying which of multiple calling party identifiers should be included in caller identification (ID) information that is sent to a second called telephony device during call setup; and establishing the requested telephony communication by interacting with the second telephony service provider.

an extension connection unit that is part of a first telephony services provider and that receives a telephony communication setup request from a first telephony device that receives its native telephony service from a second telephony services provider, where the telephony communication setup request indicates that a user of the first telephony device is seeking to setup a telephony communication between the first telephony device and a second telephony device; and an authorization unit that is also part of the first telephony services provider and that obtains, in response to receipt of the telephony communication setup request, an identifier that is one of associated with the first telephony device, assigned to the first telephony device or assigned to a software application on the first telephony device, the identifier being obtained from the software application on the first telephony device without user input or participation, wherein the authorization unit also determines if the obtained identifier is valid, and wherein the extension connection unit sets up the requested telephony communication if the obtained identifier is determined to be valid.

1. A method of bridging an ongoing telephony communication that has already been established between first and second parties by a first telephony service provider to a first telephony device used by a third party and that receives its native telephony service from a second telephony service provider, comprising:
receiving, at the first telephony service provider, a request from the first telephony device indicating that the first telephony device is to be connected to the ongoing telephony communication that has been established by the first telephony service provider between the first and second parties, where the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the first telephony device; and bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the first telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties.
receiving, at the first telephony service provider, a request from the first telephony device indicating that the first telephony device is to be connected to the ongoing telephony communication that has been established by the first telephony service provider between the first and second parties, where the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the first telephony device; and bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the first telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving step comprises receiving the request from the first telephony device over a data network.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing communication comprises establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a data network.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing communication comprises establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based data connection provided by the second telephony service provider.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing communication comprises establishing a telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based telephony connection provided by the second telephony service provider.
6. The method of claim 5, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises:
instructing the first telephony device to place a telephone call to an access telephone number maintained by the first telephony service provider via the second telephony service provider; and receiving an incoming telephone call from the first telephony device on the access telephone number.
instructing the first telephony device to place a telephone call to an access telephone number maintained by the first telephony service provider via the second telephony service provider; and receiving an incoming telephone call from the first telephony device on the access telephone number.

The method of claim 5, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises placing a telephone call to a native telephone number of the first telephony device, the telephone call being connected to the first telephony device by the second telephony service provider.

A system for bridging an ongoing telephony communication that has already been established between first and second parties by a first telephony service provider to a first telephony device used by a third party that receives its native telephony service from a second telephony service provider, comprising:
means for receiving, at the first telephony service provider, a request from the first telephony device indicating that the first telephony device is to be connected to the ongoing telephony communication that has been established by the first telephony service provider between the first and second parties, where the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the first telephony device; and means for bridging the first telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the first telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties.

an extensions connection unit that is a part of the first telephony service provider, the extensions connection unit receiving a request from the first telephony device indicating that the first telephony device is to be connected to the ongoing telephony communication that has been established by the first telephony service provider between the first and second parties, where the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the first telephony device, and wherein the extensions connection unit is configured to bridge the first telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the first telephony deice can communicate with the first and second parties.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein the extensions connection unit bridges the first telephony device into the ongoing communication by establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a data network.

The system of claim 9, wherein the extensions connection unit bridges the first telephony device into the ongoing communication by establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based data connection provided by the second telephony service provider.

The system of claim 9, wherein the extensions connection unit bridges the first telephony device into the ongoing communication by establishing a telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based telephony connection provided by the second telephony service provider.
14. The system of claim 9, wherein the extensions connection unit establishes a telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider by:
instructing the first telephony device to place a telephone call to an access telephone number maintained by the first telephony service provider via the second telephony service provider; and receiving an incoming telephone call from the first telephony device on the access telephone number.
instructing the first telephony device to place a telephone call to an access telephone number maintained by the first telephony service provider via the second telephony service provider; and receiving an incoming telephone call from the first telephony device on the access telephone number.

The system of claim 9, wherein the extensions connection unit establishes a telephony communication between the first telephony device and the first telephony service provider by placing a telephone call to a native telephone number of the first telephony device, the call being connected to the first telephony device by the second telephony service provider.

A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by one or more processors of a telephony device, cause the telephony device to perform a method of bridging the telephony device into an ongoing telephony communication that has already been established between first and second parties by a first telephony service provider, wherein the telephony device is used by a third party and receives its native telephony service from a second telephony service provider, the method comprising:
sending a request to join the ongoing telephony communication that has been established between the first and second parties by the first telephony service provider, the request being sent to the first telephony service provider over a data network; and establishing a telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider so that the first telephony service provider can bridge the telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties, wherein the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the telephony device from which the request is sent.
sending a request to join the ongoing telephony communication that has been established between the first and second parties by the first telephony service provider, the request being sent to the first telephony service provider over a data network; and establishing a telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider so that the first telephony service provider can bridge the telephony device into the ongoing telephony communication so that the third party using the telephony device can communicate with the first and second parties, wherein the second party is using a second telephony device that is registered under the same account with the first telephony service provider as the telephony device from which the request is sent.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider over the data network.
18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises establishing a voice over Internet protocol telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based data connection provided by the second telephony service provider.
19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises establishing a telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider over a cellular-based telephony connection provided by the second telephony service provider.
20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises calling, via the second telephony service provider, an access telephone number maintained by the first telephony service provider.
21. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19, wherein establishing the telephony communication between the telephony device and the first telephony service provider comprises receiving a call from the first telephony service provider, the call being connected to the telephony device via the second telephony service provider.
22. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the second party is using a second telephony device that is associated with the same account as the telephony device from which the request is sent.
