Description

Therapeutic Reach Applicator I 2017 Therapeutic Reach Applicator Patent Application Melinda M. Stevens This is my formal application for the invention of a Therapeutic Applicator, which was designed to help people with physical restrictions. User friendly system for all ages, sizes, and used for various medical specifications. Purpose is to help dry, moisturize, medicate, exfoliate and massage lower extremities, while promoting aerobic movement and upper body strengthening.

11Page Contents Abstract of the Invention ........................................... 2 Background of the Invention: ........................................ 2 Detailed Description of the Invention ............................... 3 Claims .............................................................. 4 2IPage Abstract of the Invention Working as a health care professional for over 20 years, and through my own personal experience, I've been made aware that many people struggle performing certain tasks due to physical restrictions. My invention will improve the quality of life for individuals with a limited range of motion, and will be made available to anyone whom chooses to enjoy the multitude of uses this product will offer.
My invention is comprised of two long handles that have been designed long enough to comfortably reach the users lower extremities (feet, toes, legs) and can easily reach any area on a person as needed. At the distal end of the handles, different attachments/ materials can be slipped over the gently angled hook/arm depending on what the individual requires. This material can be interchanged and used to apply lotions and topical medication, used to dry lower extremities in those tough to reach places (such as between the toes and feet) and may also be switched out for various exfoliating or therapeutic materials that may rid of dead skin, massage, itch or soften the applicable areas.
Background of the Invention:
Many products have been developed over the years to facilitate independence to those with deteriorating health, injury and/or age related issues. I wasn't able to walk properly for years, and after I had a hip replacement, I wondered how life could get a little easier for people who suffer from mobility issues. Loss of independence or restricted activity may be associated to surgery, obesity, injury or even just normal mobility issues associated with old age. Skin breakdown and irritation on the feet and lower legs is prevalent in these groups, or just simply with people who cannot reach those places properly because of limited range of motion. Health care professionals will advise clients to monitor and treat their lower extremities for skin break down, however some people have a difficult time monitoring or reaching those places and unintentionally neglect them. This product will promote and encourage users to perform the necessary activities on their lower extremities on a more regular basis. While doing so, the user can enjoy a massage like satisfaction and depending on the amount of movement, an individual may also benefit from light aerobic activity when using this product. My Wage goal is to facilitate good health and hygiene practices, while providing a relaxing, enjoyable experience. I believe this product will enhance the quality/comfortability of life for people who suffer from mobility related issues. I also believe that the back and forth, side-to-side movement will encourage light upper body strengthening and provide mental stimulation. My father sits on his chair for the majority of the day watching television, often in discomfort related to medical and aging issues. Whether just for itching, massaging, exfoliating or medicating his feet, he would also be able to enjoy the physical benefit, even if it is minimal.
Patent Comparison My initial research into this invention revealed patents where the term applicator was applied. The following are Canadian Patent Document numbers where the term applicator and/or a similar concept is used:
= 2470154 = 1274216 = 2353204 = 2569158 = 2357365 = 2213110 Detailed Description of the Invention The handles shown in Figure 1 (item la) and Figure 2 (item 2a) may be purchased at the appropriate length to allow the client to reach their lower body extremities (such as the bottom of their feet) with ease. At the ends of the handles in (Figure 1 and 2), the device has hooks/arms, which allow for a piece of material to attach by slipping it over an arm that will hook in place. The arms/hooks are shown in Figure 1 (item lb) and Figure 2 (item 2b).
The material applicator in Figure 3 will be made of an absorbent, soft material with openings at both ends shown in Figure 3 (items 3b), which attach to the hooks/arms in lb & 2b of figures 1 and 2. Both sides of the material can be used equally for the application of topical emollients, topical medication, and for drying of all parts of the lower Wage extremities. This can be interchanged with the material in Figure 4, an exfoliating material. Figure 5 shows a material with beads/balls for massaging the bottom of the feet. Figures 7 shows the two handles (la 81.
2a) connected to the applicator material.
Claims Drying the areas clients can't reach - Through attachment of the absorbent fabric material to dry lower legs (anterior and posterior), in between the individual toes and the bottom or the feet.
Removal of dead skin and build up - Through attachment of the exfoliating fabric material the client can remove dead skin and build up of debris from the lower legs, heels and other dry skin areas related to the inability to reach these areas.
Application of topical emollients - Through attachment of the soft fabric material which enable the client to apply topical ointments such as emollients to the lower legs, feet including heels, anterior feet and between the toes.
Aerobic benefit- When something feels good we are encouraged to do it often. The back and forth movement required to use this device will encourage repetition related to the enjoyment of the message feeling during the application process. Also the upper body motion will actively and passively promote improved upper body strength and promote an increase in range of motion, with the overall hopes engaged at improving the cardiovascular system.
Relaxation - The back and forth, side-to-side motion as pressure is both therapeutic and relaxing. You receive similar benefits when you pay for a message.
