Abstract
According to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, shoplifting costs U.S. stores more than $10 billion a year, or $25 million a day. Hermetically sealed oyster or clamshell hard-to-open plastic casings surround a wide array of goods, such as MP3 players, webcams, USB drives, computer mice, headsets, batteries, electric toothbrushes and many children's toys. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated that in 2006, injuries from plastic packaging resulted in approximately 6,000 emergency-room visits. Because clamshells are impossible to open with bare hands, attempts to open them with knives, box cutters, razor blades and scissors have sometimes led to amputated fingertips, severed tendons and injured eyes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about one-third of consumer garbage is packaging, and plastics comprise 12 per cent of U.S. waste each year. Description
BLISTER PACK OPENER
This invention allows for the easy separation of two laminated products. The particular item described is designed to open blister packaging of pills and small clamshell packaging.
BACKGROUND;
In this day and age, many products are packaged using a film laminated to a support material such as another film, cardboard, wood, metal, leather, or other substrate.
These two sheets are difficult to separate, often resulting in the destruction of the packaging in order to get at the contents.
In this document we will concentrate on a particular such packaging, namely, blister packs commonly used to seal prescription drugs dispensed to patients.
Presently, the only way to open the blister is to manually remove the bottom sheet from the top blister pack using one's nails. Needless to say, this is easier for some individuals than others, often resulting in frustration and it becomes necessary to break the bottom open with a tool such as scissors. The Blister Buster (trade name) hand tool easily separates the two layers and the pills fall out.
SUMMARY;
This tool is a simple metal object used to pry open the bottom from the top.
It is a hand tool and in one motion is inserted into the blister pack, and twisted Thereby penetrating the blister pack releasing the pills.
