Description

TITLE
METHOD FOR REPAIRING A TRAP AND APPARATUS THEREFOR
FIELD
[0001] The invention relates to the field of traps within catch basins.
BACKGROUND
[0002] It is known to use a point of entry trap (POET) to avoid the release of gases from catch basins.
[0003] Typically, a POET is made from high-density polyethylene structural foam or other plastic polymer and is positioned between, and directly connects, the catch basin with the catch basin's outflow pipe.
[0004] It is known for existing traps to break when in use.
[0005] Replacement of the existing trap is conventionally done by digging up the earth around the catch basin, removing the trap from outside the catch basin and inserting a new trap. This often results in substantial cost.

DESCRIPTION
[0023] An example of a prior art trap or POET 10 is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
POET 10 comprises a body 12 defining a trap outlet opening 14 and a cavity 16 in fluid communication with trap outlet opening 14. A trap outlet pipe 18 extends away from body 12 about trap outlet opening 14.
[0024] In use, a cover 20 is often disposed in covering relation to cavity 16 of body 12 and defines a trap inlet opening 22. In POET 10 of Figure 2, an opening would be drilled or cut into cover 20 in order to form trap inlet 22 (indicated by the dashed lines, for example).
[0025] As seen in Figure 3, in use, POET 10 is secured within a catch basin 30, having a basin opening 32, to a basin wall 34 and is fluidly connected to a basin outflow pipe 36. In use, POET 10 is often positioned within basin wall 34 such that trap inlet opening 22 is positioned below trap outlet opening 14, or trap outlet opening 14 is positioned between trap inlet opening 22 and basin opening 32, as depicted in Figure 4. In this way, fluid travelling through trap inlet opening enters cavity 16 and travels out of POET 10 through trap outlet pipe 18 and into basin outflow pipe 36.
[0026] As mentioned above, POET 10 has been known to break or be damaged in use over time. Described below is an exemplary apparatus 50 which may be used in repairing or reinforcing POET 10, and a method 100 for repairing or reinforcing POET 10.
[0027] Exemplary embodiment of apparatus 50 is shown in FIGS. 5-8 and, overall, includes a wall plate 52, a tubular member 54, a duct 56, and a filler member 58.
[0028] Wall plate 52 defines a cleanout 60, and a filler opening 62, which is disposed above cleanout 60. Wall plate 52 further defines an inlet opening 64 which is disposed below cleanout 60. In this way, cleanout 60 is disposed between filler opening 62 and an inlet opening 64.
[0029] Tubular member 54 comprises a rim 66 and extends from wall plate to rim 66, such that tubular member 54 is in communication with cleanout 60.
As best seen in Figure 7, tubular member 54 defines an intake opening 68 disposed proximate inlet opening 64 between rim 66 and wall plate 52. Tubular member 54 further has an outer surface 72 and a foam ring 74 fixed to outer surface 72 proximate rim 66.
[0030] In the depicted embodiment shown in Figures 5 and 7, tubular member 54 extends through wall plate 52, and forms an inner tubular portion 76 about cleanout 60. Inner tubular portion 76 is secured to wall plate 52.
[0031] As best seen in Figure 7, duct 56 extends between, and fluidly connects, intake opening 68 and inlet opening 64.
[0032] Filler member 58 operatively connects to wall plate 52 adjacent filler opening 62 forming a vessel. Filler member 58, in the depicted embodiment, is also secured to inner tubular portion 76.
[0033] Turning now to method 100 for repairing or reinforcing POET 10, the exemplary method is shown in Figures 9 - 13.
[0034] As discussed above and shown in Figure 3, POET 10, which may be damaged, is already secured within catch basin 30 to basin wall 34 and is fluidly connected to a basin outflow pipe 36.
[0035] Optional step 102 of method 100 comprises removing cover 20 from POET 10 from inside catch basin 30, if it has not yet been removed, and further removing any broken pieces of POET 10 within cavity 16, trap outlet pipe 18 and/or basin outflow pipe 36.
[0036] Step 104 comprises placing a supplementary trap in covering relation to cavity 16 from within catch basin 30. In the depicted embodiment shown in Figures 9 and 10, the supplementary trap is apparatus 50 and basin outflow pipe 36 is not shown.
[0037] As depicted, apparatus 50 is placed in covering relation to cavity from within catch basin 34 such that cleanout 60 is aligned with trap outlet opening 14. As depicted, tubular member 54 is adapted to have a smaller diameter than trap outlet pipe 18 and adapted to be in fluid communication with basin outflow pipe 36. As such, when apparatus 50 is placed in covering relation to cavity 16, tubular member 54 is received in spaced relation within trap outlet pipe 18 and in fluid communication with basin outflow pipe 36.
[0038] Apparatus 50, in use, is further orientated within catch basin 30 such that filler opening is 62 disposed between basin opening 32 and cleanout 60.
[0039] At step 106, a means for forming a gap compartment 70 between POET 10 and the supplementary trap, or apparatus 50, is provided to separate catch basin 30 from trap outflow pipe 36.
[0040] As noted above, and as shown in Figures 11 and 12, the diameter of tubular member 54 is less than that of trap outlet pipe 18 such that tubular member 54 is received therein in spaced relation, resulting in gaps 70A
between tubular member 54 and trap outlet pipe 18. Tubular member 54 and duct 56 are also arranged and dimensioned to be received within cavity 16 of body 12 in spaced relation, resulting in gaps 70B between tubular member 54/duct 56 and body 12.

Gaps 70A and 70B, as shown, are in fluid communication with one another.
[0041] In order to seal gaps 70A and 70B together to collectively form gap compartment 70, wall plate 52 is secured to basin wall 34 in sealed covering relation to body 12. Wall plate 52 as shown is mechanically secured to basin wall 34 by concrete screws 76, positioned around the edges of wall plate 52. This helps to seal gap compartment 70 from catch basin 30.
[0042] Gap compartment 70 is further sealed from trap outflow pipe 36 when an installer, not shown, reaches through tubular member 54 from inside catch basin 30 and applies or backs sealant, like quick setting mortar 78, on exterior surface 72 about rim 66 to help fill the gap between tubular member 54 and trap outlet pipe 18. In this way, foam ring 74 in combination with mortar 78 seals and completes gap compartment 70.
[0043] Sealed in this way, gap compartment 70 as shown is in fluid communication with filler opening 62.
[0044] Step 108 of method 100 comprises filling gap compartment 70 with a substance having a pourable state and a solid state. In the depicted embodiment, the substance is grout 80. As indicated by arrow D in Figure 12, grout 80 is poured into gap compartment 70 via filler member 58. Filler member 58 directs grout through filler opening 62, and into gap compartment 70 until gap compartment is full. Filler member 58 further retains some grout 80 such that filler opening 62 is filled with grout 80, thus further sealing catch basin 30 from basin outflow pipe 36.
In this way, wall plate 52 prevents grout 80 from entering catch basin 30 and foam ring 74 in combination with mortar 78 prevents grout 80 from leaking into basin outflow pipe 36.
[0045] At step 110, if necessary, the substance within gap compartment 70 is cured or otherwise allowed to harden into its solid state. In the depicted embodiment, grout 80 is allowed to harden into the solid state such that the hardened grout secures apparatus 50 to POET 10. A new cover (not shown) may then be placed in covering relation to cleanout 60 over inner tubular portion 76 and catch basin 30 may be operational again. Installed in such a way, fluid within catch basin 30 enters apparatus 50 through inlet opening 64, is directed by duct 56 into tubular member 54 and directed away from catch basin 30 into basin outflow pipe 36.
[0046] An advantage of the described apparatus 50 and method 100 is that an existing POET secured within a catch basin may be repaired or reinforced from within catch basin 30, rather than from outside the catch basin. In this way, earth around the catch basin does not have to be dug up in order to repair or reinforce existing POETs.
[0047] Whereas specific embodiments of a trap and method are described, numerous variations are possible.
[0048] For example, whereas a self-curing substance is specifically described above, the substance may alternatively be a thermoplastic material that may be introduced into the gaps or the gap compartment at elevated temperatures which then hardens at ambient temperature.
[0049] Further, alternatively, a granular material or resin may be used and cured by other means such as radiation or elevated heat.
[0050] Accordingly, the invention should be understood to be limited only by the accompanying claims, purposively construed.
