Abstract

The Multidesk is smart sitting/ standing desk that automatically adjusts to a person's preferences based on the radio frequency identification (RFID) of the card or Fob of the user. The system is powered by the Soreltech ST-125 RFID controller which is a standalone piece of hardware that is integrated into the Multidesk system.
The software portion of the system resides on either the local computer used with the Multidesk or on a remote server that stores the information for all the desks in a group (home or office). This software controls the desk where users can manually set height preferences, add/remove users, access network settings and view user history. This history can be used to determine how long users have been sitting vs. standing, tracking calories, etc. There will also be a phone app that will allow users to control a desk remotely. The Multidesk will also be equipped with manual up and down buttons, if users choose to control the device in this fashion.
In Figure 1, the main components of the MultiDesk system are shown. This includes the integration of the Soreltech ST-125 RFID controller and Reader. The AC/DC
power supply and motor drivers. The desk is driven by the two linear actuators with potentiometer feedback tied into the ST-125. The PC shown in the diagram could be a desktop or laptop any device that has network functionality. The manual switch also is connected into the ST-125 which allows for manual adjustment of the linear actuators.

Description

PATENT APPLICATION MULTIDESK
2 Description 2.1 Technical Field The invention pertains to smart devices in particular a smart office/
laboratory desk. More specifically, the present invention provides a smart office desk that adjusts automatically to a users settings based on the radio frequency identification it receives. These settings can include but are not limited to: Whether a user prefers to begin their session at a sitting or standing position, the height levels of the desk at each position, position of monitors, position of keyboard tray. Changes can be made through the software either on the local computer or connected smart phone or tablet. Users can be changed either by presenting a RFID
card or key Fob or manually. Desk height can also be changed through the use of buttons positioned under the table surface which do not require the use of RFID or software. Desk height will be relayed to the user through the telemetry feedback provided by the ST-125.
The invention can also be used most beneficially in settings where more than one user uses the same workstation. This could be in an office setting, or at home with a family where sitting and standing heights differ greatly. The software can also be installed on a server/ computer on the TCP/ IP network where all the desks in the group are connected. This central location can contain all the individual preferences to allow users to move from station to station and not have to set new preferences each time they log into a new desk. The user simply presents his or her card at each station and the desk will automatically adjust.
These adjustable features are important for not just the comfort of a particular user but also for health as there have been many studies about the negative impact of sitting for prolonged periods. Also, for some users with chronic back problems, the MultiDesk and a cushioned standing pad can perhaps alleviate these conditions. Session statistics and overall statistics will be tracked through the software, as well as calories burnt and prompts to alert the user when sitting or standing for too long.

2.2 Description Of Prior Art It is known in the prior act to provide a RFID Smart Office Chair. U.S. Patent Number 6,964,370,which issued to Hagale et al on August 5th, 2004, which details smart office furniture, specifically a chair which could contain user profiles that could be accessed via remote station of some kind. The chair has actuators that adjust to user preferences.
Similarly, European Patent Number EP2625982A1 issued to Hjelm dated August 8 2013, details Control of a Height Adjustable Piece of Furniture. It discloses that a height adjustable piece of furniture enables a user to control the height with the users computing device.
U.S. Patent Number 6505780B1 issued to Yassin and alSafadi on January 1, 2003, discloses a method of programming one or more personalized settings for adjustable components of a vehicle by using a communication device such as an RFID tag.
U.S. Patent Number 5381137A issued to Ghaem, Istvan and Lauro on January 10, 1995 discloses a method of using RE tagging systems and RE tags.
3 Background Intellectual Property 3.1 ST-125 The ST-125 is a general purpose 125Khz RFID controller that is integrated into MultiDesk system as a piece of background intellectual property. It is a standalone product developed by Soreltech. It's primary function is to read 125Khz 64 bit RFID cards or key fobs. It passes the information onto its host server which in this case is the MultiDesk software via TCP/IP. In previous applications it was used for door/ gate access. It's open source architecture allows it to be used in a variety of applications. The ST-125 acts as the mediator between the software and the desk hardware. Based on the responses received from the MultiDesk software, the ST-125 will send commands to the actuators for up and down control. It also receives telemetry from the actuators and constantly updates the software as to the current table position.
The manual buttons also integrate into the ST-125 overriding the software when required. The controller can also be accessed directly through its HTML page allowing users to change network settings and view the last valid card data. The ST-125 probably is not patentable on its own as there are many similar controllers already on the market; none the less, it is a very useful tool due to its versatility in a multitude of RFID applications.

kr...... . . _...4 Figure 9: MultiDesk Flow Diagram The main components of the system are shown in Figure 9. MultiDesk is a 12V
system which requires a COTS AC/DC converter to supply power for both the ST-125 and the motor controller. As previously described, the ST-125 is the core of the system. It sends/receives potentiometer data from the linear actuators, converts this data and then responds to requests from the software. The ST-125 also listens for UDP requests from the software then issues the appropriate commands to the motor controller via TTL level UART. The RFID
reader will send the software card data, and depending on the users choice will automatically raise or lower the desk based on the users preferences. If card data is unique, it will ask the user to enter user name and preferences. Finally, the manual buttons override software commands and control the desk up or down, as long as the user has the button engaged.

Cr PATENT APPLICATION MULTIDESK
4.2 Electrical The electrical components of the system will be mounted underneath the desk in an enclosure which will house the power supply, motor controller and ST-125. A power bar will also be mounted in close proximity for both power to the MultiDesk, as well as user devices which can be fitted through a grommet on the top of the table. The actuators will have quick disconnect plugs for easy assembly. The push buttons will be mounted to the bottom of the table flush with the right front end for easy access. This module will have a quick disconnect at the enclosure as well. The RFID reader will be mounted to the left front side. This will allow the user to present a card to the system without fear the table's movement will impact the user. The reader module will also be quick disconnected at the enclosure. Schematics are included in section 6.1.
4.3 Mechanical The MultiDesk will be nominally 150cm long by 74cm wide. This number is adjustable depending on the tabletop used and has no real bearing on the invention. It will be height adjustable from about 76 cm to about 137cm. The Multidesk will be speed limited to about 0.5cm per second for user safety and system stability. There will also be a crossbar brace included as stability will become more critical. It is recommended that users are standing when presenting a card to the RFID reader, as the desk may change height if that option has been selected. Keeping users away from the desk while moving is strongly recommended.
Mechanical drawings are included in section 6.2.
4.4 Software The MultiDesk system software will be installed on the local computer controlling the desk, as well as the remote server, if users wish to use their RFID cards on multiple desks of the same network. This software can be installed on tablets or smart phones if remote control of the desk is required.
