Abstract
In order to encourage adults and children to brush their teeth for a longer period of time, a toothpaste containing fragments of film has been developed. The orally acceptable film comprises a film substrate comprising a water-soluble polymer matrix which includes a first pigment that is released upon dissolution of the matrix. The release of the first pigment signals to the users that the length of the brushing time. However, because film fragments comprising the first pigment would appear as unappealing dark particles in the toothpaste, the film substrate of the present invention further comprises layers of a second pigment which masks the surfaces of the film substrate. These layers also contain a polymeric material which adhere the second pigment to the film substrate. The polymeric material may be polyvinylpyrrolidone and the second pigment may be titanium dioxide.

[0002] It is recommended that children should brush their teeth for at least 45-60 seconds, and adults for at least 90 to 120 seconds. Most people, especially children, do not brush their teeth for a sufficient period of time to obtain maximum benefit, and moreover have difficulty accurately estimating the time necessary to brush the teeth.
[0003] It is known to provide color changing films in toothpaste which release a pigment after a given brushing period. In particular, it is known to provide dark, even black, color changing films within toothpaste which release the dark pigment from the film upon brushing because the brushing action in the oral cavity causes dissolution of the film matrix and release of the dark pigment. Such dark films are inexpensive and have very strong color change signal (high color change contrast). However, such dark films are not aesthetically acceptable to the consumer because the consumer does not want to see dark particles in the toothpaste.
[0004] It is also known to provide a color changing film which comprises triple layer laminated sandwich structure of a white film-black film-white film. The white films may incorporate titanium dioxide, TiO2, in a film matrix similar to the matrix of the central dark film. The outermost white films partially mask or hide the black film in the middle of the sandwich, although the peripheral edge of the black film is not covered by the white films. These triple layer films arc more consumer-acceptable visually. However, the color change contrast is diminished due to the very high color-covering power of TiO2 from the outer layers, and the films are very expensive to make.
[0005] There is a need for improved, consumer-friendly products and methods to encourage adults and children to brush their teeth for a longer period of time.
[0006] It is an aim of the present invention to provide a color changing film, and a dentifrice including such a film, which can provide a color change signal to increase the brushing time for the consumer by controlling the brushing time at 45-60 sec for children and 90-120 sec for the adults, with a film which can be inexpensive to manufacture, is visually acceptable to the consumer and can provide a strong color change signal.

[0013] The inventors have found, in particular embodiments, that by adhering, using a polymeric material as an adhesion agent, a masking (second) pigment onto the film substrate, the relatively dark color changing pigment can be masked by the relatively light color masking pigment until the color changing pigment is released during use to indicate adequate brushing time. The resultant film and dentifrice are aesthetically acceptable to the consumer, the films are inexpensive to manufacture, the masking can be substantially complete and the color change indication is strong.
[0014] Furthermore, the polymeric material acting as an adhesion agent ensures a strong bond between the masking pigment and the film, with the result that the masking pigment is not inadvertently abraded from the film surface, so that the relatively dark colored film is not unmasked until the color change indication is released at the desired moment during brushing.
[0015] The brushing effect in the aqueous environment within the oral cavity causes dissolution of the polymeric material, which, enhanced by the mechanical rubbing of the film fragments by the brush filaments and against the oral surfaces, causes removal of the masking pigment from the film. The film then disintegrates and dissolves to release the color changing pigment.
[0016] This use of a masking (second) pigment adhered to the film substrate can provide the advantage of avoiding the cost and complexity of creating additional masking film layers laminated to the core color changing film.

sheet coated with a release agent to facilitate permit separation of the resultant film from the surface. The slurry was then dried to obtain a film having an average thickness of about 0.025 mm (1 thousandth of an inch, or 1 mil). The composition of the dry film is also indicated in Table 1.

This color change was an indication of sufficient brushing time.

1. A method of making an orally acceptable film, the method comprising:
(a) forming a film substrate comprising a water-soluble polymer matrix which includes a first pigment that is released upon dissolution of the matrix;
(b) applying a polymeric material to at least one surface of the film substrate;
(c) applying a second pigment to the polymeric material which at least partially masks the at least one surface of the film substrate; and (d) adhering the second pigment to the at least one surface of the film substrate by the polymeric material.

5. The method according to claim 1 or 4, wherein in step (b) the polymeric material is in solution in a solvent and in step (d) the solvent is evaporated to leave a layer of polymeric material adhering the second pigment to the at least one surface of the film substrate.
6. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the second pigment comprises titanium dioxide.
7. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein the polymeric material comprises polyvinylpyrrolidone.
8. The method according to claim 7, wherein in step (b) the polyvinylpyrrolidone is applied as a solution in a non-aqueous solvent which is evaporated in step (d).
9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the solvent is ethanol.
10. The method according to claim 8 or 9, wherein the polyvinylpyrrolidone is dissolved in the solvent in an amount of from 10 to 30 wt% based on the total weight of the polyvinylpyrrolidone and the solvent.
11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the polyvinylpyrrolidone is dissolved in the solvent in an amount of from 15 to 25 wt%, based on the total weight of the polyvinylpyrrolidone and the solvent.
12. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 11, wherein in step (d) the coated film substrate is heated.
13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the heating is carried out for a period of from 30 to 90 minutes at a temperature of from 75 to 125 °C.
14. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 13, wherein in step (c) the second pigment is in the form of powder particles.
15. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 14, wherein the polymeric material represents from 5 to 25 wt% of the total weight of the second pigment and the polymeric material.
16. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 15, wherein the polymeric material represents from 10 to 20 wt% of the total weight of the second pigment and the polymeric material.
17. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 16, wherein the second pigment represents from 5 to 25 wt% of the weight of the film substrate.
18. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 17, wherein the second pigment represents from 10 to 20 wt% of the weight of the film substrate.
19. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 14, wherein the second pigment is titanium dioxide powder in an amount of from 5 to 17 wt% of the film substrate, and the polymeric material is polyvinylpyrrolidone in an amount of from 5 to 17 wt% of the total weight of the titanium dioxide powder and the polyvinylpyrrolidone.
20. The method according to any one of claims 2 to 19, further comprising forming the film substrate into film fragments, wherein the film fragments are formed before the second pigment or the second pigment coated with polymeric material is applied to the film substrate; or wherein the film fragments are formed after the second pigment or second pigment coated with polymeric material is applied to the substrate; and wherein the film fragments have a maximum dimension of from 1 to 4 mm and a thickness of from 0.025 to 0.075 mm.
21. The method according to claim 20, wherein in step (b) the polymeric material is applied so as to cover the entire surface of each film fragment and in step (c) the second pigment is applied so as to cover the entire surface of each film fragment.
22. The method according to claim 21, wherein the entire surface of each film fragment includes two opposed faces and a peripheral edge surface therebetween.
