Abstract
The present invention provides an improved notebook, journal, planner, or the like that provides a writing instrument storage space without the need of conventional pen holders.
A void space between the bound paper and the spine of a fully opened book has been utilized as the storage space in this invention. The spine is made of elastic material that stretches to store various sizes and shapes of writing instruments and to maintain the void space even after the book is closed. In the case a pen is inserted in the void space, the elastic force of the spine prevents the book from completely closing. Hence, the invention is securely locked or closed by a strap.

Description
Book With Writing Instrument Storage Space The present invention provides an improved book of collected pages such as notebooks, journals, planners, or the like that provides a writing instrument storage space by utilizing the void space of a book due to its elastic spine.
Background Of The Invention Due to the inconvenience of separately carrying a writing instrument and a book of collected pages, pen or pencil holders have been designed and widely used for notebooks, journals, planners, or the like. Examples of typical holders, whether attachable or configured within the stationary objects, are shown in the following prior arts:
US1513611 Laird US005140723A Genzel US20130049345A1 Imbernino US00D603904S Esfahani US006543615B2 Lake US007562636B2 Regala EP2774774 Di Natale Though such holders have achieved conveniency in carrying a writing instrument, there has been a continuing need for improvement in a number of factors such as safety, accessibility and design.
Conventional pen holders create extra space on a book to store a writing implement and this causes numerous disadvantages. For one, the conventional holders that retain the writing instrument does not fully cover a pen or pencil, causing the dislodgement of the writing instrument including the loss of the pen's cap due to external forces, and causing damage to its surrounding from the exposed tip. In addition, these conventional holders become obstacles in writing, for example, by preventing books from opening flat unless the writing tools are manually removed.
Summary Of The Invention When a notebook, journal, planner or the like is fully opened, it creates a void space between the bound paper and the spine. The present invention utilizes the void space as a means of storing a writing instrument. The spine is made of elastic material that stretches to store various sizes and shapes of writing instruments and to maintain the void space even after the book is closed. Since the present invention creates a writing instrument storage space without the need for an additional pen holder, it resolves the disadvantages that are caused by typical pen holders. Firstly, the void space securely and safely stores the writing instrument, preventing the instrument from dislodging, losing the cap of a pen, and damaging its surroundings. Secondly, the void space disappears when the pen is removed. This enables users to write without discomfort since the book can be fully flattened. Furthermore, this present invention does not infringe on the overall look and integrity of the notebook, journal, planner, or the like.
The present invention essentially requires a strap as a means of locking or closing the book due to the elastic force from the spine in the presence of a writing instrument.
The features and advantages of the invention will become more obvious with the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments and the drawings.
In the drawings, which form a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the notebook, journal, planner, and the like, in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 but shown retaining a pen according to the invention;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of Fig. 1 in an opened position;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of Fig. 1 in an opened position and shown retaining a pen;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the first embodiment of the book showing a discontinuous spine with gap and fastener; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the second embodiment of the book showing a continuous spine with fastener.
Detailed Description Of The Invention Referring to the figures, which are provided by way of example for purposes of illustration, and not by way of limitation, the present invention provides for the utilization of a void space 4 between the bound paper 2 and the elastic spine 1 when a notebook, journal, planner, or the like is fully opened, FIG. 3. The elastic spine stretches to store various sizes and shapes of writing instruments, FIG. 4, and to maintain the void space even after the book is closed as illustrated in FIG. 2. The spine is continuous or discontinuous with a gap 6. The gap of the discontinuous spine as seen in FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, enables users to easily pull out the writing instrument from the void space.
For the continuous spine as shown in FIG. 6, its length is shorter than the length of the book pages.
The different lengths form a margin 9 that helps users to take out a writing instrument from the void space. In the case a pen is inserted in the holder, the elastic force of the spine prevents a book from completely closing. Hence, it is securely locked or closed by a strap 7 that is permanently or removably affixed to the outside surface of the back cover panel 3. The strap is preferably formed of either elastic or inelastic material. The elastic strap band is the most commonly used type in the book industry as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4. The inelastic strap requires fasteners 8, such as rivets or snaps, or other similar fasteners as illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6.
Background Of The Invention Due to the inconvenience of separately carrying a writing instrument and a book of collected pages, pen or pencil holders have been designed and widely used for notebooks, journals, planners, or the like. The gap of the discontinuous spine as seen in FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, enables users to easily pull out the writing instrument from the void space.
For the continuous spine as shown in FIG. 6, its length is shorter than the length of the book pages.
