Abstract

In addition to modernization of Burnaby General Hospital with a Medical School in collaboration with BCIT and SFU...we are also proposing the largest cancer treatment and research centre in West Vancouver (soon to be developed Hospital). The West Vancouver Hospital could be tied to a ship-hospital equipped for all time and threat importance treatments and a helicopter, that can reach the patients first (ie. helijets) that carry the patients from remote locations to the ship-hospital that lags behind in speed but can also act as fuel refill for the helicopter. Area served include (collaboration with Comox Hospital) - also we can upgrade North of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands...North of Powell River, even help Whistler/Blackcomb...and other communities of BC.
Many of the Ideas' purpose are to enhance better quality of life for Staff (Doctors and Nurses...) and patients which was the reason given by nurses I spoke with that made one British Columbia's Medical Facility elected best employer in British Columbia):
1. We offer a design of 360 degree nursing stations, with the center interior space for the nurses' downtime (such a space nurses have told me are important in awards for employer excellence)...one part for rest and the other for escape ie. video games, movies, internet browsing. The 360 degree design allows less nurses to cover more ground.
2. Rooms come with cameras (possibly with night vision to save nurses time wasted walking from room to room doing rounds which often don't do much to help anybody)... to address privacy issues, we could give the patients the schedule of times they would be checking up and a amber light goes on before the camera goes on and a green light indicates the camera is on. A central cam station can be responsible for monitoring all the rooms (with availability of patient needs and conditions.
3. A separate thermostat heater/air conditioner in every room with a maximum upper and lower locked limit so temperature not too extreme and controllable over a range while not wasting energy (abuse use).
4. I have been pushing for Burnaby General Hospital to collaborate with BCIT
and SFU to create joint Medical School. (for a longtime now).. (one objection I ran across) to pay for it (my group could finance the facilities), then we could initially charge high tuition for those who can afford it, with the promise that tuition rates will lower as we breakeven from the initial setup costs (or we could do an initial public offering). Some Courses can be offered on-line as well. If we cut the 4 years of initial science studies, and offer entry into medical school earlier, it may make our school more popular and we can churn out (focus on quality, reliability - ie.
we could study what characteristics makes the best performer for every type of doctor - not just perseverance).
5. For patients not on serious spacial diets, we could have a part of the cafeteria coordinated with menus of all the nearby restaurants, the patients orders and gives their room number and name and ward to a restaurant delivery logistics center which then sends the food as it arrives to the hospital to the patients' room. For those who don't want delivery we could offer economy meals, middle class and first class meals; cafeteria serving bubble tea.
6. Hotel minibar mini refrigerators can be rolled to rooms that want it and designated shopper can go out and grocery shop for the patients to stock the mini fridge.
7. Joint movie (small ie. home theater for patients and staff for professionalism, staff seating can be up stairs and patients lower floor).
8. Hotel and condos, for patients with chronic conditions, visitors over time, people at high risk (ie. seniors of hip falling injury or compromised immune systems), people waiting for procedures, pregnant women about to give birth, and doctors and nurses wanting a place nearby work to rest (avoid commute).
9. Serious patients with panic button to hand around their neck, for patients with roaming privileges but are fragile to falling and breaking bones or dementia or are not allowed outside the hospital we could have them carry (ie. strapped location finding chips) and/or house arrest leg bans that trigger alarms when the patient leaves hospital grounds.
Foe people with Chronic Pain, for a better quality of life for people with terminal illness, for people, for people trying needing physiotherapy (ie. spinal cord injury), for people suffering with depression and anxiety, PTSD, morning sickness, any and all discomfort (there can be a section for staff).
10. Sell decks of cards, jigshaw puzzles, DVD mobile movie players, board games for patients in medium to long stay and staff volunteers that teach games like bridge, senduko...to patients and staff.
11. Photograph vending machines, for patients wanting a memento of their stay, and/or terminally 12. Pet therapy - proven to lower stress/anxiety/depression which in themselves are diseases but lower stress also enhances quality of life for the terminally ill and also lower stress helps fight immune related diseases also cures loneliness (pets human relationships based on affection) and may help illness such as the shaking (from lateral sclerose) and also may help addicts.
13. Roof top with garden acrylic bubble (especially good for Seasonal Affective Disorder) sun deck/lounging chairs - proven to lower stress/anxiety/depression which in themselves are diseases but lower stress also enhances quality of life for the terminally ill and also lower stress helps fight immune related diseases also cures loneliness (pets human relationships based on affection) and may help illness such as the shaking (from lateral sclerose) and also may help addicts.
14. Underground bowling alley like at Riverview.
15. Treadmill pool, Sauna, whirl pool, steam bath, bath tubs with a retail store that sells lush bombs and/or aroma therapy (massage/spa by custom patients order; by most benefit ie. physiotherapy first) - - proven to lower stress/anxiety/depression which in themselves are diseases but lower stress also enhances quality of life for the terminally ill and also lower stress helps fight immune related diseases also cures loneliness (pets human relationships based on affection) and may help illness such as the shaking (from lateral sclerose) and also may help addicts.
16. Pond with fishes - proven to lower stress/anxiety/depression which in themselves are diseases but lower stress also enhances quality of life for the terminally ill and also lower stress helps fight immune related diseases also cures loneliness (pets human relationships based on affection) and may help illness such as the shaking (from lateral sclerose) and also may help addicts.
17. Rentable e-devices (possibly chained to the bed and plugged into the wall -or LAN - socket depending on whether the wireless hospital equipment require free airwaves) where the hospital gets a package deal for internet jacks, or have an internet cafe...to browse the internet, email, twitter/blog and/or skype and texting also available in waiting rooms. Instead of the hospital ordering so many magaimes, e-devices can be offered with access to subscribed newspapers, magazines and any and all periodicals of interests.
18. A lounge for patients/visitors and staff with library of e-readers with local hospital database of reading materials).
19. For doctors and support that have proven they can handle it and have their own best practices collaborative helping each other in their unique challenges, we could use hospital equipment that would normally be unused at night to perform procedures from surgeries to scanning equipment...whereby patients that are willing to pay the highest premium, bid on the doctors for nighttime procedures (since the premium is high - also ensures shorter line-up which gives patients incentive to pay higher price - and it gives capable and willing doctors incentive) as the patients who had their procedures done at night (on equipment that would otherwise lie around wasted in unused), the taken patient free up space for procedures done during the daytime. Also by using equipment at night the equipment and facilities can bring in twice or more revenues.
20. Another possibility is a gym (basketball, badminton court) for patients and staff, especially patients with physical disabilities, that doubles as pharmaceutical conference venue, soup kitchen stage for live shows...local artists, musicians, events celebrations Halloween, Christmas...And if the Emergency Room and any all space ie. Beds become overloaded with easy erection of separators for patient privacy and peace and we can drape off part the gym for immediate care needs versus therapeutic physical uses and/or any and all functions pertaining to hospital and also hospital outreach to the community..
21. An events/activities Bulletin Board in visible locations.
22. Shuttle Bus for outings (Beach) barbeque, to the shopping mall, restaurants...have patients suggest. Bus Loop with outdoor heater.
23. Mini golf.
24. Internet Cafe.
25. In the Surgery the old scalpels can be replaced with better quality knives, ie. short fish fillet knife and/or KUWN RIKON (Switzerland) and other sharper and stronger knives than the existing scalpels.
26. The entire hospital can be designed like a Starbuck's cafe or Fairmont Hotels (interior and exterior) even different popular themes for each hospital..
27. The research part of the hospital can raise money by Foundation that sells lottery tickets and scratch and win, the tickets are categorized the disease (also adopt a cause to fight categories of illness)...sold like Lotto 649.
28. Offer one stop shop for Dentists, Dieticians, Optometrists, health food (ie. calories...protein for muscle workouts to strengthen for general health and/or those who's muscles have become flaccid after sickness and treatments and/or losing weight).
29. We could have a large assortment of gifts so different patients can get different presents especially gifts that have a very long shelf life.
30. We plan to develop a database for doctors to sort through so they can bring a laptop along during rounds to demonstrate why they give the diagnosis and specifically the symptoms that match. The symptoms of the illness (most often abnormal physical sensations and/or abnormal looks for an area skin placement on body, lumps, range of healthy body weight to height to frames) can be ones only limited to certain area of the body like kidney problems. The symptoms are observable in the case of internal (which would require blood tests, urine tests, x-rays, fMRI, MRI, PET, CATScan, (ie. broken bones bruised tisse/organs) , external sample of infected tissue (typical areas lungs infection) include can be something that comes out of the body and also orifices (ie. the eyes) and something passed (ie. urine color, mucous), any all body surfaces exposed to air bourne illness, skin rashes (pain, itches) observable unnatural looks, abnormal reaction (immune allergies and body parts shaking) signs that certain body parts aren't performing as they should (chronic pain, discomfort, tightness -not healing fast, mechanisms aren't functioning regularly) ie. hyperventilation, prostate cancer (urine not passing correctly)...the program recommends which tests to select to rule out other diseases with similar symptoms, the dbase could eventually come with a guide Artificial Intelligence/algorithm to prognosis what symptoms are permanent (ie. amputees), % cance the ilness will be terminal, severity of danger(s) (enough to need risky treatments) to leave alone and risks of treatment, body part affected and the body parts need; immediate; short; medium; and long term. How long left to live versus starting to signs of remission. Symptoms can look somewhat different (when observing cases to cases (some looking like a typical sub-group to sub-group) and can be different levels of severity and can be in different stages of ravaging on different parts of the body We could also list other symptoms that come with a suspected illness rule out non-matching and prove the correct diagnosis. The dbase can be sorted by illness (symptoms see above - describing looks words) internal/external, names of illness, body parts especially only the ones that are unique to specific body parts, sort by medical terminology.
Once developed this technology can be used worldwide with other communications support and second opinions.
31. List of what you can't do (mix with specific medications) given each medications downside.
32. For the those who are bored and can handle the academic work load, finding themselves in the hospital with time on their hands and wanting to be better when they get out we could have on-line courses even degrees...
33. Fish Tanks (any all uses ie. offices) can have a grill (like the heavy duty road runoff built for storm drains) beneath the fish tank so there is no risk of fish tank spillage and therefore no need for insurance - proven to lower stress/anxiety/depression which in themselves are diseases but lower stress also enhances quality of life for the terminally ill and also lower stress helps fight immune related diseases also cures loneliness (pets human relationships based on affection) and may help illness such as the shaking (from lateral sclerose) and also may help addicts.
34. I am a firm believer that spaces that don't need sunlight (temporary stay like bowling alley and/or gym and/or parking - like Metrotown) are by best practices built underground to increase more sunlit spaces above ground for those who need and appreciate it more.
35. Robot surgical arms for performing surgery on patients with contagious serious illnesses like AIDS.
36. Much Automation developed (mostly for logistical tasks taking the work load off nurses) by Intelligent Hospital Systems Inc (ie. software programs 1. digital access to patient and prescription; 2. handling of lab equipment and automated customization of patient medications;
3. barcode admixture preparations to decrease administration errors by bedside; 4. mimic and thereby reducing admixiture tasks; 5. Audit trail stored electronically for future referrence; 6.
Use current pharmacy supplies of syringes, drug vails, bags etc...; 7.
preparstion of admixture from high-throughput doses to complex patient-specific solutions; 8. Prepare syringes in a ready-to-administer format with plunger depressed to eliminate air space.
37. Paramedics with skype access to hospital duty doctors for diagnosis and treatment also online medicine. Possible cameras strapped to their heads (so the camera doesn't get in the way of -hands free) with removal precise zooming capabilities.
38. To eradicate airbourne/waterbourne contagious diseases (ie. legionnaires disease) we can use membrane filters and force air through the filters ie. reverse osmosis membranes that filter 90 to 99% of contaminants or boil/steam (hot enough can destory even dioxins/furans and hard to destroy prions) the air (water) before circulation and/or ultra violet that kills pathogens.
39. Large Factory outlets for any and all health aids, from prosthesis (for amputees), to mobility aids to hearing aids, eyeglasses, walking canes for blind.
40. Health Internet Portal for each and every major/common illness grouped by body part and cause of illness to organize for mutual morale support where people who survived and /or learn to live even thrive with the illness reach out to new and scared patients.
41. Neighborhood hotels/condos - community living - (with possible where patients that should be monitored are hooked up to cardio and respiratory monitors that have real time wireless monitoring in the neighborhood at a central monitoring station (also with panic button in case they fall and can't make it to the phone) and location finding chip.
42. Bring in a teacher that is qualified/experienced volunteer (or paid)...
For Arts/crafts ie. knitting, cooking, painting, sculpting, arcade - possible - (video) game competitions, charades, mahjong, book reading club and discussions over tea and snacks, that cover any and all interests and activities. Options for staff to take such classes as night classes to make most uses of such resources.
