Description

PACK FOR SMOKING ARTICLES
Technical field of the invention This invention is related to a pack and to a pattern to make the packs. In particular, the invention relates to packs covered on top and with a removable tab on said top in order to get the smoking articles out of the pack, but not limited thereto.

Background of the invention As used herein, the term "smoking article"
includes smokeable products, such as cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos whether based on tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco or any tobacco substitute and also heat-not-burn products;
but are not limited thereto. The smoking article may be provided with a filter so the smoker extracts the gaseous flow or the filter may be omitted if so desired.
The carton packs are well known to those skilled in the art and are widely used in the tobacco industry to contain cigarettes, since due its shape and material it has a resistance to being crushed. An example of such pack with a closed cover on top with a tab is shown in U.S. patent document US3,037,683, which shows a tab that close a pack of smoking articles, this pack has the disadvantage of a tab which is formed by two parts or layers, one over the other and does not have an internal foil which can be accessed once the tab is removed.

However, one problem with conventional packs is that they are difficult to manufacture and do not solve the problem of having easy access to the smoking articles, since they do not have a removable tab, such as the tab of this application, to access the items for smoking; in the past the packs that had access to the smoking articles on top, were mostly known as "soft packs" (also known as flexible) made from flimsy paper instead of cardboard, i.e. that they were soft, flexible and wrapped in cellophane, or other similar material, which in order to open one first had to remove the cellophane, once this was removed the foil that covers the smoking articles (protective paper) is removed and thus have access to the smoking articles. The main disadvantages of this type of packaging is that the cigarette packs, upon removing the smoking articles from its interior, were deformed, which is undesirable; to achieve its goal of safely containing the smoking
2 articles and that the foil does remove as a whole a paper is placed in the center in the shape of a lid that sticks to front and rear walls and passes through the top, its main disadvantage is that it leaves the foil visible on both sides of the lid, with which the user can access the smoking articles from two different locations and with the involuntary release of the smoking articles on both sides, this is not recommendable since the smoking articles may lose their characteristics.

It is known to those skilled in the art that there are users who prefer to extract the smoking articles from the top and not through a flip-top hard pack, likewise there is a necessity to maintain the smoking articles in good condition until the user removes the part of the foil (or interior paper);
nevertheless, the configuration of the current packs that perform this function are soft and/or semi-soft packs (mild and/or semi-mild) which do not contain foil and that do not offer any resistance to deformation, as explained in the paragraph above. Said foil or interior paper is important to maintain the quality and freshness of the smoking items in good condition.
3 This invention seeks to provide a cigarette pack that overcomes or substantially alleviates the problems of the conventional soft packs mentioned above.
Objectives of the invention In accordance with this invention, its main purpose is to provide a pack for smoking articles, comprising a body and a cover with a removable tab on top of the pack's body to close a space defined by the body, the upper part includes a removable section and a non-removable section, where it forms a cavity to remove the foil and access to the smoking items.

A second purpose of this invention is to provide a pack of smoking articles that comprises a series of mounting flaps, which are cut at a certain angle to avoid junction with the section to which it sticks. Advantageously this configuration results in a better bonding of the flaps.

A third purpose hereof is to provide a solid upper wall section (cardboard) and an upper groove wherein the upper portion consists of a single layer of material for easier removal; advantageously this type of configuration helps the rest of the pack's body not to
4 be maltreated.

A fourth purpose hereof is to provide a pack of smoking articles wherein the walls that form the body of the pack are completely perpendicular with respect to each other.

A fifth purpose hereof is to provide a removable top that comprises one sole layer of material and has pre-cut lines on only two edges, while the other two edges are not joined nor pre-cut with any other section.

A sixth purpose of the invention is to provide a system which upon separating the removable upper section the foil or similar material can be located and to be cut by the user to access the smoking articles.

A seventh purpose of the invention is that of permitting only the opening of one side of the upper section of the pack of smoking articles.

An eight purpose of the invention is to allow the printing of information on the solid upper wall section (cardboard) so the pack has a larger space for
5 advertising or information.

In a preferred embodiment, the pack is shaped for twenty-five smoking articles, without there being any limit to the number of smoking articles it may include, except as provided in the regulations in force in the Mexican Republic for the manufacture of tobacco products.

In a different embodiment, the pack may be longer or shorter to protect smoking articles of different lengths.

Brief description of the figures Below the preferred embodiments of this invention will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the model used to form the cigarette packs of this invention;

Figure 2 is a view in perspective of an unassembled stack of packs which are processed in the machine to form the packs;
6 Figure 3 is a view in perspective of an assembled pack where the section of the upper wall is removed from a part;

Figure 4 is a view of the system of assembly of the packs of this invention;

Figure 5 shows a detailed view of the lower part of the plan view of figure 1.

Detailed description of the invention With reference to the drawings, figure 1 shows a body (3) to form a pack for smoking items according to the principal embodiment of this invention, the dotted lines indicate the fold lines except for a pair of dotted lines as will be defined in this detailed description and the solid lines denote cut lines as will become evident in the following description.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the model used for the assembly of the packs for smoking articles of this invention, in general figure 1 shows a section that forms the front wall (1) which is preferentially rectangular and the lower section is of a slightly smaller size than the height thereof, this is
7 advantageous when manufacturing packs of twenty-five smoking articles (cigarettes), without it being exclusively for said amount of cigarettes; a rear wall (2); a lateral wall (4) and a lateral wall (5), the lateral walls (4 and 5) are parallel to the front wall (1) and rear wall (2), the lateral wall (4) connects to the front wall (1) by the lateral fold line (6a), while the lateral wall (5) is connected to the front wall (1) by the lateral fold line (6b); the rear wall (2) connects to the lateral wall (5) by the lateral fold line (6c); additionally there is a bottom wall (7) which connects to the front wall (1) by a lower fold line (8b), there is also an upper wall (9) which connects to the front wall (1) by the upper fold line (16a) which will be detailed below. Additionally there is a lower lateral mounting flap (15a) which connects to the lateral wall (4) by a lower fold line (8a) the lower lateral mounting flap (15a) has a rounded shape in one of its extremes, this helps to facilitate the assembly of the pack; similarly there is a lower lateral mounting flap (15b) which connects to the lateral wall (5) by a lower fold line (8d), the lower lateral mounting flap (15b) has a trapezoidal shape with an angle of 10 and 20 as will be detailed in figure 5, this helps to facilitate the assembly of the pack.
8 In figure 1 there is also a series of mounting flaps as detailed below; the upper mounting flap (12) connects to the rear wall (2) by the upper fold line (16b) only in one section (which has the same size as the section of the top wall (10a)), the same upper mounting flap (12) has a series of signal(s) corresponding to a non-printing area (22c), while one of the edges (12a) is at an angle of 5 , similarly there is a lateral mounting flap (13) that connects to the rear wall (2) by the lateral fold line (6d), the same lateral mounting flap (13) has a series of signal(s) corresponding to a non-printing area (22b), these signals may be, although not limited to, circles, squares, printed information or simply the absence of information, while edges (13a and 13b) are at an angle of 5 ; the lower mounting flap (14) connects to the rear wall (2) by the lower fold line (8c), the same lower mounting flap (14) has a series of signal(s) indicating a non-printing area (22a), while the edges (14a and 14b) are at angle of 5 , the formation of angles in each of the mounting flaps (12, 13 and 14) has the advantage that at the moment of placing an adhesive on each of these flaps, it does not leave the flap towards the sides that have print (10a, 4, 1, 7, 5 and 2) which
9 avoids that the adhesive can hit the pack with the cellophane wrapping it.

Finally, in figure 1 a principal body (3) can be seen, formed by the upper wall (9) it is shaped by a section of upper wall (l0a) and a section of upper wall (10b), where the section of upper wall (l0a) is bigger than the section of upper wall (10b), this has the advantage of preventing that a number of smoking articles get removed at once, and furthermore of keeping the pack free of deformations; the section of the upper wall (10b) connects to the section of the upper wall (l0a) by a line on top of the upper wall section (11a) and also connects to the front wall (1) by a front line of the upper wall (11b). It is worth mentioning that both the line on top of the upper wall section (11a) and the front line of the upper wall (lib) are pre-cut lines preferably with a cut section of 3mm by lmm of union, this section has the advantage of keeping joined the section of the upper wall (10b) when the pack is assembled and the cellophane is placed, but is sufficiently weak for a user to remove it to have access to the foil and after to the smoking articles. On the other hand and to be able to remove the section of upper wall (10b)an upper groove (21) is placed which has the function of being substantially circular with a depth of 2mm, this provides the advantage of being able to put a nail (which as is known is substantially circular) and to remove the section of the upper wall (10b) easily, this depth is also preferred since a thicker groove would permit a higher quantity of air to enter which would change the characteristics of the smoking articles, affecting their freshness and quality. One of the main advantages of this invention is having only one layer of material at the section of the upper wall (10b), this helps to facilitate the opening of the pack and avoids maltreating the foil that is inside the pack of smoking articles.

The section of upper wall (10b) and the section of upper wall (10a) due to its solid characteristic (cardboard) is imprinted printed information related to the information of the product or any other type of information, an example thereof is that on the removable section you may place the legend "remove here" while on the non-removable section you may place information regarding the number of smoking articles inside [the pack] and/or information of the company. This is advantageous because in the past the soft packs that have an opening in the supper part to extract the smoking articles do not have space to print any type of information on the upper section.

Figure 2 is view in perspective of an unassembled stack of packs that are entered into the machine to form the packs, normally this stack is made up of 228 cartons, nevertheless this number may change according to the characteristics of the machine that assembles the packs.

Figure 3 is a view in perspective of a pack assembled as a cube that has the characteristics of this invention, where the section of upper wall (10b) is removed from the pack, by the front line of upper wall (llb) it is also joined to the pack by the upper line of upper wall section (lla) and one can clearly observe the foil (23) inside the pack, thus a user may advantageously decide between completely breaking the section of foil or else just unfold the paper to preserve the quality of the smoking articles. The same figure 2 shows the main body (3), a rear wall (2), and a lateral wall (5); the rear wall (2) connects to the lateral wall (5) by the lateral fold line (6c);
similarly the lateral wall (5) connects to the front wall (not shown in figure (3)) by the lateral fold line (6b) Figure 4 is a view of the system of assembly of the packs of this invention; which shows the feed of the cardboard (24) for the assembly of the packs that have the constraints as filed in this detailed description, which have the information of the product on the front are shown to the public, while the flaps do not contain product information since they are not visible to the public, first the smoking articles (25) are fed in bundles of smoking articles (26) and the foil (32) is placed (although it may also be a interior paper with particular characteristics) by an internal paper feeder (27) , the above is joined with the cartons (24) for the assembly of the packs, the pack (28) is formed by means of folds and application of an adhesive on the mounting flaps, the adhesive (29) is left to dry, the cellophane (30) is places and the finished packs (31) are obtained.

Figure 5 shows a detailed plan of the lower section of figure 1 where can be clearly observe each of the parts that help to form a pack easier, where the bottom wall (7) which connects to the front wall (1) by a lower fold line (8b); the lower mounting flap (14) connects to the rear wall (2) by a lower fold line (8c), this lower mounting flap (14) has a series of signal(s) that correspond to a non-printing area (22a), where it has an angle (20) of 5 ; the lower lateral mounting flap (15b) connects to the lateral wall (5) by a lower fold line (8d), the lower lateral mounting flap (15b) has a trapezoidal shape that has an angle (18) of 10 and an angle (19) of 20 ; the lower lateral mounting flap (15a) which connects to the lateral wall (4) by a lower fold line (8a) the lower lateral mounting flap (15a) has a rounded shape and form an angle (17) of 13 . For the formation of the plan with which the pack will be formed, the plans are cut from cardboard (or any material with rigid characteristics) according to the knowledge herein, the pre-cuts are made and proceed to feed the system of figure 4, the information of the pack may be printed before the cut or after the cut and will depend on the necessities of the manufacturer.

The knowledge herein may be used on cardboard, plasticized or un-plasticized cardboard or any type of material suitable for producing packs with the characteristics of this invention.

Although in each of the example embodiments described above it is used to assemble a pack for twenty-five smoking articles, with the knowledge here in packs for a larger number or smaller number of smoking articles may be manufactured.

Although this invention shows and described different details, those skilled in the art will appreciate that variations to the above exemplified embodiment may be made which is within the scope of this invention, as defined in the following claims.
