Abstract

The garment is provided with a pair of main straps which extend over opposite shoulders of a person wearing the garment. Two encircling straps extend horizontally around the person's torso and are securely attached to it. A pair of vertical straps each connected to a separate main strap have fasteners for attachment to a load. A pair of lateral straps are attached to opposite sides of the garment and they too have fasteners for attachment to the load The weight of the load bears on the shoulders of the person wearing the garment and not against his neck.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a garment to which a load may be attached and more particularly to a garment which carries a load in such a way that its weight is borne on a person's shoulders and not on his neck.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Workers in occupations that require them to move from place to place usually carry with them what they require in their work. For example, drywall tapers usually carry with them boxes containing rolls of tape coated in drywall compound as they move about a structure. Fruit pickers carry pails in which they deposit freshly picked apples, pears, grapes and so on as they move about in an orchard while food sellers at sporting events, outdoor concerts and so on carry trays of food and drinks with them as they move about the audience. The boxes of coated drywall tape, pails of fruit and trays of food and drinks are frequently attached to straps which loop around the workers' necks.
The boxes, pails and trays can be quite heavy and the longer they bear on a worker's neck the more pain the worker will experience. Over time the worker's neck may become quite stiff with the result that the worker may work less efficiently and, as well, be forced to book off sick more frequently because of the pain.
I have invented a garment to which a load may be attached and in which the weight of the load bears on a workman's shoulders and not on his neck The garment is particularly suited to = CA 02772860 2012-03-28 carrying containers such as boxes of coated drywall tape, pails of fruit and trays of food and drinks. The garment allows the level of what is being carried in the containers to be adjusted to that which is most convenient to a worker.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Briefly, the garment of my invention includes: a pair of main straps which are attached to the garment and which are adapted to extend over opposite shoulders of the person and down-wardly at the front of the garment over the person's chest and at the back over the person's shoulder blades and downwardly therefrom. At least two encircling straps are attached to the garment and which extend generally horizontally around the person's torso. The straps are spaced apart from one another and each is joined at its ends at the front of the garment. Connect-ing means such as a buckle selectively interconnects the ends of each in order to securely attach the garment to the torso. A pair of vertical straps is disposed at the front of the garment and the articles are suspended from them.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The garment of the invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of the front of the garment used to carry a tray;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the back of the garment;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the side of the garment used to carry a pail; and Figure 4 is an elevation of the side of the garment used to carry a tray.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the description of the drawings.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, the garment of the invention, generally 10, includes a pair of main straps 12,14 which are stitched, sewn or otherwise attached to the material of the garment where they are in contact with The straps extend over opposite shoulders 16 of a person who is wearing the garment and from the shoulders, the straps extend downwardly at the front over the person's chest and at the back over the person's shoulder blades and downwardly from there.
In the Figures, the garment is depicted as a vest without sleeves and a collar and that is the preferred form of the garment because it can be easily donned and removed.
The garment can however take other forms such as a pullover, shirt or jacket. As long as the garment is worn over the shoulders and torso it is suitable and is does not matter whether it has sleeves or a collar or whether it is open at the front or not.
Main straps 12, 14 and the remaining straps of the garment described below are com-posed of material which has the strength to carry the weight of the load to which the straps are attached. The straps should be flexible enough to bend over the shoulders of the person who wears the garment and to bend around the waist of the person as must the encircling straps described below. However they do not need to have the flexibility that the material of the garment must have to fit comfortably to the torso and shoulders of the person wearing the garment. The material of the garment should accordingly have a degree of flexibility that the straps lack but need not have the strength necessary to carry the weight of the load as must the straps.
A pair of encircling straps 20, 22 are attached by stitching, sewing or otherwise to the garment where they are in contact with it. The encircling straps extend generally horizontally around the torso of the person wearing the garment and are are spaced vertically apart from one another. The ends of each encircling strap are interconnected at the front by male and female components of a conventional spring-loaded buckle 24. The encircling straps function to securely attach the garment to the person's torso.
A pair of lateral straps 30, 32 extend toward the front of the garment from its two sides beneath the arms of the person wearing the garment. The lateral straps are attached to the mater-ial of the garment at their rear ends but are otherwise not attached to it so that they are free to move in any direction. The effective length of the lateral straps can be adjusted by conventional means and a spring loaded clip 34 or hook is attached to the forward end of each lateral strap A vertical strap 34 is connected to a each main strap in the area of the latter strap adjacent to each shoulder of the person wearing the garment. The vertical straps are otherwise not attached to the main straps and hang down freely from the front of the garment. The effective length of the vertical straps can be adjusted by conventional means and a hook 36 is attached to the lower end of each vertical strap.
The clips and hooks depicted in the drawings are of course interchangeable and other conventional connectors may be substituted for either one or both of them.
In Figures 1, 2 and 4, the vertical straps 34 are connected to the side walls 40a,b of a tray, generally 40 adjacent to its front wall 40c. The lateral straps 30, 32 are also attached to the side walls of the tray but adjacent to its rear wall 40d. The straps thus do not interfere with the loading or unloading of material from the tray by the person who is wearing the garment. Such a tray is conventionally used to carry food and drinks to spectators in a stadium, arena or at an outdoor concert or sporting event.
In Figure 3, there is a hook 50 attached to the lower or free end of the vertical straps 52.
The hook is in the shape of a figure 8 having a closed loop 50a at its upper end and an open loop 50b at its lower end. The open loop is attached to opposite facing side walls of a bucket 54. At the free end of the illustrated lateral strap 56 is a spring loaded clip 58 which is attached to the closed loop 50a of the hook. Such a bucket is conventionally used to carry coated drywall tape and freshly picked fruit.
When the straps are arranged in the above manner the weight of a load carried by a person wearing the garment is borne on his shoulders and does not bear on his neck. He can caiTy one or more articles without the use of his hands and he has ready access to the articles as they are required.

It will be noted in the drawings that the upper edge of the garment of the invention which defines the opening for the head of the person wearing the garment is well set apart from the person's neck. In particular main straps 12, 14 rest on the person's shoulders and are well spaced apart from the person's neck. The weight of the load borne by the garment is accordingly upon the person's shoulders and not against his neck.
It will be understood, of course, that modifications can be made in the garment of the invention without departing from the scope and purview of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
