Abstract

A method and apparatus for selecting a target interactive device for providing of a program involves receiving at a viewer interactive device a selection of a program available from a video signal source, and selecting one of a plurality of target interactive devices using the viewer interactive device. The target interactive devices are operative to receive delivery of the selected program. The selected program is received from the video signal source using the viewer interactive device coupled with but different from the selected target interactive device, and the received selected program is provided from the viewer interactive device to the selected target interactive device.

Claims (27)

1. A method for selecting a target interactive device for providing of a program, comprising:

receiving at a viewer interactive device a selection of a program available from a video signal source;
selecting one of a plurality of target interactive devices using the viewer interactive device, wherein the plurality of target interactive devices are operative to receive delivery of the selected program;
receiving the selected program from the video signal source using the viewer interactive device coupled with but different from the selected target interactive device; and providing the received selected program from the viewer interactive device to the selected target interactive device.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the selection of the program further comprises at least one of automatically selecting the program and receiving a user selection of the program.
3. The method of claim 1, further comprising notifying the viewer interactive device of the selected program and selected target interactive device.
4. The method of claim 1, further comprising directing the selected target device to at least one of record the selected program, stream the selected program, and download the selected program.
5. The method of claim 4, wherein directing further comprises passing the selected program through the viewer interactive device to the selected target interactive device.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected program is available from a digital archive accessible to the viewer interactive device.
7. The method of claim 6, wherein the digital archive comprises programs available for access on demand.
8. The method of claim 7, further comprising displaying a selectable listing of programs available from the digital archive.
9. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

determining that the selected program will not be available from the digital archive at some time in the future; and storing the selected program with the selected target interactive device.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the viewer interactive device comprises a set top box, and wherein the selected target interactive device comprises at least one of a television and a recording device.
11. A system for selecting a target interactive device for providing of a program, comprising:

a viewer interactive device, wherein the viewer interactive device includes a processor operative to:

receive a selection of a program available from a video signal source;

select one of the plurality of target interactive devices operative to receive delivery of the selected program;

receive the selected program from the video signal source; and provide the received selected program from the viewer interactive device to the selected target interactive device.
12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further operative to at least one of automatically select the program and receive a user selection of the program.
13. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further operative to notify the viewer interactive device of the selected program and associated selected target interactive device.
14. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further operative to direct the target device to at least one of record the selected program, stream the selected program, and download the selected program.
15. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor is further operative to pass the selected program through the viewer interactive device to the selected target interactive device.
16. The system of claim 11, wherein the selected program is available from a digital archive accessible to the viewer interactive device.
17. The system of claim 16, wherein the digital archive comprises programs available for access on demand.
18. The system of claim 17, wherein the processor is further operative to display a selectable listing of programs available from the digital archive.
19. The system of claim 16, wherein the processor is further operative to:

determine that the selected program will not be available from the digital archive at some time in the future; and store the selected program with the selected target interactive device.
20. The system of claim 11, wherein the viewer interactive device comprises a set top box, and wherein the identified target interactive device comprises at least one of a television and a recording device.
21. An interactive multimedia hub comprising:

an input module configured to receive an item of digital content from a digital content source;

an output module coupled to a target interactive device, wherein the target interactive device is operative to receive the item of digital content; and a processor configured to receive a user instruction that selects the target interactive device, and wherein the processor is configured to direct the item of digital content over a network to the target interactive device.
22. The interactive multimedia hub of claim 21, wherein the network is one of a home network or an Internet.
23. The interactive multimedia hub of claim 21, wherein the target interactive device includes a recording device.
24. The interactive multimedia hub of claim 21, wherein the output module is operatively coupled to a second target interactive device.
25. The interactive multimedia hub of claim 21, wherein the item of digital content is a program and the user instruction includes selecting the program from a plurality of programs available from the digital content source.
26. The interactive multimedia hub of claim 21, wherein the item of digital content comprises video or audio.
27. A method for controlling viewer video distribution comprising:

providing a system, wherein the system comprises distinct hardware modules, and wherein the hardware modules comprise an input module, an output module, and a processor;

receiving a user selection of a video, wherein the processor processes the selection of the video;
receiving a user selection of a target interactive device, wherein the processor processes the selection of the target display device;

receiving a video from a video signal source, wherein the input module receives the video; and directing the video to the selected target interactive device via the output module, wherein the processor provides the directing.
