Abstract
A fence has a lower rail, an upper handrail and pickets which extend vertically between the two rails. The lower rail has an elongated bottom wall which defines the lowermost element of the lower rail. The bottom wall is composed of material through which light may penetrate and which is adapted to receive an elongated light for illumination from beneath the fence.
Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to fences and more particularly to a fence having a lower rail which is continuously illuminated from within the rail.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In my application for a Canadian patent filed in the Canadian Intellectual Property Office on February 2, 2011 no. 2, 730,855, I describe an illuminated handrail for a fence. In the subject application I describe an illuminated lower rail also for a fence. Like the illuminated handrail, the lower rail of the subject application is continuously illuminated along its length. The source of illumination may be a so-called rope light containing an elongated light emitting diode ("LED") or the source of illumination may be a string of electric incandescent or LED
bulbs. The light source is accommodated within a compartment in the lower rail so that adverse weather con-ditions such as rain or snow has no affect on the strength of the illumination or on the life of the source of the illumination.
The illuminated lower rail of the subject fence has a number of desirable features in addition to the benefit mentioned above. It is decorative when illuminated and may be illum-inated not only by lights of a single colour but by lights of many colours to give it an effect similar to a kaleidoscope. Moreover, the lights may be steady or may pulse.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Briefly, the fence of the subject invention is defined, at the bottom, by a lower rail from which a number of pickets extend upwardly. The fence has a lower rail provided with an elong-ated bottom wall which defines the lowermost element of the lower rail. The bottom wall is composed of material through which light may penetrate and which is adapted to receive an elongated light for illumination from beneath the fence or railing.
The word "fence" in this application is intended to cover a barrier, railing or other up-right structure enclosing an area.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The fence of the invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a simplified elevation of the fence; and Figure 2 is a section of the lower rail of the fence.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the description of the drawings.
With reference to Figure 1, the subject fence, generally 10, is composed of a horizontal lower rail 12 and a number of pickets 14 which extend upwardly from the lower rail. The pickets are equally spaced along the length of the rail and terminate at an upper handrail 16.
With reference to Figure 2, the lower rail has an elongated bottom wall 20 which defines

2 the lowermost element of the rail. The bottom wall is composed of transparent or translucent material or other material through which light may penetrate. The bottom wall is dome-shaped in cross-section and curves upward at both sides and terminates at upper lips 22a,b Threads 24 are formed on the outer walls of the bottom wall beneath the upper lips for engagement with threads on the inner surfaces of side walls 26 of the lower rail. By means of the threads, the position of the bottom wall relative to the side walls can be adjusted. Beneath threads 24 on the bottom wall are formed grooves 28.
The lower rail has two previously mentioned side walls 26. The two side walls are spaced apart from one another and extend vertically downward and terminate at a lower edges 32. An elongated ridge 34 is formed on each side wall adjacent to its lower edge and the two ridges face one another. The ridges are accommodated within grooves 28 and cooperate with the grooves to interconnect the side walls with the bottom wall. The lower wall is resiliently deformable such that pressure on the bottom wall which causes the grooves toward each other causes the grooves to move out of contact with the ridges with resulting separation of the bottom wall from the side walls.
The side walls and the bottom wall define a compartment 40 for accommodation of a conventional elongated light such as a rope light (not illustrated). The upper portion 26a of side walls define a second compartment 42 for accommodation of the pickets. The pickets rest upon a partition wall 44 which lies between the two compartments. The pickets may be immobilized

The pickets may be immobilized
3 within compartment 42 by means of screws, bolts or the like (not illustrated).
A cover plate 46 lies adjacent to each side wall of the lower rail and the two plates are held in position by lower and upper fasteners 48a,b which extend outwardly from the side walls.
The cover plates are resiliently deformable so that they can be attached to the lower rail and detached from it as desired.
It will be understood, of course, that modifications can be made in the structure of the lower rail of the invention without departing from the scope and purview of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
