Abstract
The present specification provides an agitator of a horizontal anaerobic digester that induces an axial motion to the contents of the digester tank comprising twisted vanes attached to a central shaft.
Description
Twisted Vane for Agitator of a Horizontal Anaerobic Digester PRIOR ART SUMMARY
An anaerobic digester system typically includes a horizontal tank for digesting the material being processed. The tank includes an agitator that Is rotated to cause the contents to mix and aid the process of digestion. WO 2009/127042A1 Is an example of such a prior art digester with an agitator.
The motion of the agitator of the '042 application does not directly cause the contents of the tank to move In an axial direction, that Is to move In a direction substantially parallel to the center line axis of the cylindrical tank. This invention teaches Improvements to the agitator that will cause such a motion which has been shown to be beneficial to the mixing of the contents of the tank.
FIGURES
Figure 1 shows one embodiment of the prior art agitator taught by the '042 reference.
Figure 2 shows a second embodiment of the prior art agitator taught by the '042 reference Figure 3 shows a first improvement embodiment to the agitator which comprises twisted vanes mounted to the central shaft.
Figure 4 shows a detailed view of the twisted vanes of figure 3. Figures 4a, 4b and 4c show alternate embodiments of Figure 4.
Figure 5 shows a second improvement embodiment to the agitator which comprises angled foam breaking longitudinal members.
Figure 6 shows a detailed view of the angled foam breaking longitudinal members of figure 5.
Figure 7 shows a third improvement embodiment to the agitator comprising twisted vanes Incorporated directly into both the large diameter annular discs and the solid small diameter discs.
DESCRIp M
The invention teaches Improvements to the agitator of a horizontal anaerobic digester that induce an axial motion to the contents of the digester tank. Figures 3 and 4 show a series of twisted vanes 501 attached to the central shaft of the agitator at various angles and at various longitudinal positions. As the shaft rotates the twisted vanes 501 cause the contents of the tank In their vicinity to move in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft, which is coaxial with the central axis of the cylindrical tank. Figure 4a shows vanes having slots 502 to further enhance mixing. Figure 4b shows vanes have perforations 503 to further enhance mixing. Figure 4c shows scoops 504 to further enhance mixing.
A second embodiment is depicted In figures S and 6. The foam breaking longitudinal members of the prior art application '042 are reference numeral `108" In its spedfication.

foam breaking members 108 are generally equidistant from the shaft 16 to share a common circular path about the shaft axis during rotation of the agitator assembly." (page 12 lines 9-15). Our invention teaches mounting foam breaking members 601 at an angle such that one of their faces acts like a twisted vane that causes the contents of the tank in its vicinity to move In a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft, which Is coaxial with the central axis of the cylindrical tank. For reference purposes figure 6 shows a dotted line 600, parallel to the shaft 16, that represents the mounting position of the prior art foam breaking members 108. A further improvement to the foam breaking members 601 is to perforate them to further enhance their mixing properties.
A third embodiment is depicted in figure 7. Twisted vane elements 701 can be formed from the material used to manufacture the small diameter disc 12 In the '042 reference.
The twisted vane 70116 angled sufficiently away from the discs surface to cause the contents of the tank in its vicinity to move in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft, which is coaxial with the central axis of the cylindrical tank. Similarly, twisted vane elements 702 can be formed from the material used to manufacture the large diameter annular disc 14 in the '042 reference. The twisted vane 702 is angled sufficiently away from the disc's surfaceto cause the contents of the tank in its vicinity to move in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft, which is coaxial with the central axis of the cylindrical tank. Multiple twisted vane elements can be incorporated in various positions in both disc types to induce this desired axial motion.
