Description
METHOD FOR BRANDING CRUSTACEANS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method and more particularly, relates to a method for identifying an object.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is well known in the art to identify different objects. In the case of consumer goods, the object is frequently placed in a package upon which various information about the product can be inscribed.
For food objects such as meat and fish, the product is usually wrapped in a package which will then have a label affixed giving information such as weight, price per unit, date of packaging, et cetera. In the case of certain fruits and vegetables, an adhesive label is utilized which is affixed directly to the product. Such products would include, for example, tomatoes, melons, and the like.
One product which is not adaptable to any of the above methods is the labelling of crustaceans such as lobsters, crabs, et cetera. There have been attempts to affix labels by mechanical means, but the reliability of such a method is minimal.
The labelling of crustaceans can take many different forms, as one may wish to identify the origin of the crustacean. This is particularly important when one wishes to "brand" the crustacean as being of a particular type or from a particular region, as certain types of crustaceans are known to have a certain taste when coming from a particular region.
Frequently, unscrupulous vendors will identify their products as being from the desirable region when, in fact, they come from a different less desirable region. As there is no way to identify the crustaceans as being from a particular region, there is nothing to stop perpetrators of the fraud.
Naturally, other reasons to identify the crustaceans could be to build brand loyalty.
Thus, there may be a certain brand which has built a reputation for a quality of product. At the present time, there is very little to identify the particular brand.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for the branding of crustaceans.
According to the present invention, the method comprises the step of laser printing information on crustaceans. The desired information may be printed on a surface of the crustacean which, in the case of a lobster, could either be on the back of the crustacean or alternatively, on the claws of the crustacean. Other suitable crustaceans include crabs, mussels, oysters, etc.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Having thus generally described the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing illustrating an embodiment thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a copy of a photograph of a laser marked crustacean.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
As may be seen in Figure 1, the lobster is marked to identify where the lobster was caught.
The marking was applied using a laser engraving machine wherein the workpiece -i.e. lobster is stationary and the laser moves around in the X and Y
directions. Laser marking for surfaces that vary in height are available. They use elaborate focusing mechanisms which are generally known as dynamic auto focus systems. They adjust the

The laser engraving machine may operate either in a vector or raster mode.
Both such systems are known in the art.
It will be understood that the above described embodiment is for purposes of illustration only and that changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
