Description
Reformed snack foods Technical Field This invention relates to nutritious, natural snacks that even the teeth challenged can enjoy.
Background of the invention Various roasted nuts and seeds, and dried fruit have been eaten as snack foods for many years. Individually, or mixed together in a `trail mix', these foods are nutritious, tasty and packed with energy. Unfortunately, as people get older, their teeth can sometimes have a tendency to go bad ... or even `go' altogether. This makes it especially difficult to eat hard crunchy foods like nuts and hard chewy foods like dried fruit.
Description The crushing and reforming of nuts, seeds and dried fruits to their original form or an approximation of such form. The reformed product is easily dissolved in the mouth without the aid/need of functioning teeth.
The product could be reformed using a mold and a binder such as: a starch, a sugar, honey, flour, agar, etc. The binder is used in such a proportion as to render the product solid, but easily dissolved in the mouth.
As an example, peanuts would be crushed (and/or ground, shredded, pureed, etc) to the approximate consistency of a smooth peanut butter. A binder would then be added to the crushed peanut paste, the paste would be poured into molds shaped like peanuts, and the product would be allowed to set (heating may be required, depending on the binder). The intended result being something that looks like a peanut and tastes like a peanut (after all it IS peanut), but does not need to be crushed by teeth to enjoy ... it simply falls apart in one's mouth.
The same would be done for cashews, walnuts, almonds, brazils, pecans, macadamias, filberts, pistachios, hazelnuts, chestnuts, pine nuts, or any other nut that is enjoyed as a snack food.
The same would be done for common snack food seeds such as sunflower seeds (kernels) and pumpkin seeds.
The same would be done for dried fruits such as raisins, oranges, apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupes, cherries, cranberries, currants, figs, dates, goji berries, guavas, honeydew, mangoes, nectarines, papayas, peaches, prunes, strawberries, raspberries, or any other dried fruit that is enjoyed as a snack food.
These products could be created to be enjoyed individually or combined as `trail mix'es. Removing a substantial percentage of the fat content before reforming is also an option.
