Abstract

The present invention provides an open sided flip-down leg for a trailer, or a trailer tongue, or a conversion kit thereof, being secured by a hitch pin in a transportation mode, pivots to and is secured vertically, by a catch to a front angle brace, in a storage mode. A rear jack housing, utilizing gears positioned therein, deploys a triple hinged support base with a castor wheel, mounted on its front side, which raise a tongue/frame upward facilitating attachment or disengagement of a tow bar to a towing vehicle, or for other purposes. Retraction of said hinged support base, and said castor, causes said tongue/frame to be lowered to a point of contact between said open sided flip-down leg foot plate and a ground surface.
A 100 manifestation presents a flip-down leg of hollow tube construction, housed inside and moving through an open under side of a tongue/frame to a vertical position, secured by a catch to a front angle brace, enabling its jack ground contact plate to be ratcheted or screwed down or up, utilizing an elongated square drive socket, causing a tongue/frame to raise providing assistance in attaching or detaching a towbar from a tow vehicle. "Y" configured trailer tongues having a flip-down leg at each side, may also utilize them leveling a trailer frame. A

manifestation presents a hollow deep tube flip-down leg, secured vertically by a catch to a front angle brace, having sufficient lower portion capacity to wholly or partially house a conventional or modified, retracted top sidewinder trailer jack, which may be deployed to raise the tongue/frame and provide a castor wheel for mobility.

Description

TRAILER FLIP-DOWN LEG CASTOR WHEEL AND FOOT JACK
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a towable apparatus such as a trailer or a trailer tongue, or conversion kit thereof, that may be used in transporting any type of equipment, goods or materials.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Prior art trailer designs and components work adequately for lightweight trailer applications, but do not incorporate a means for lifting and supporting heavier tongues to assist in moving and disconnecting a towbar from a tow vehicle, positioning the trailer and re-connecting.

Current trailer frames using a "Y" configured tongue, may utilize the present invention on both sides of a frame to raise and level it as desired. The single pole security trailer tongue also uses a flip-down leg to provide ground support in a storage mode. However, heavier applications require a swivel or other trailer jack to raise the trailer frame/tongue and to provide a castor wheel to facilitate attachment or disconnection of a tow bar to a tow vehicle.

The present invention evolved from Canadian patent No. 2,460,262 MULTIPLE
USE ADJUSTABLE SECURITYY TRAILER FOR TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE AND

HOUSING, (U. S. No. 7,458,597 B2) and Canadian application No. 2,567,427 FOLDING, SUPPORT AND SECURITY TRAILER TONGUE, both of which utilize a standard flip-down leg for a convenient change-over from a transportation to a storage mode.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention overcomes the problems of prior art by expanding the function of the flip-down leg, already standing vertical and resting on a ground surface, to include raising and lowering the tongue/frame and providing a castor wheel with which to assist in maneuvering a detached trailer.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg which, in a vertical position, utilizes a rear jack housing positioned and secured to its front side.

Another object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg which, in a vertical position, utilizes a hinged support base positioned and secured near its lower end.

It is also an object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg with a rotating castor wheel centrally mounted on a hinged support base front side.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg, wherein rotation of gears within a rear jack housing, causes deployment of a castor wheel.

A further object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg, in which downward deployment of a castor wheel raises a trailer tongue/frame.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a front angle brace catch to hold an open sided flip-down leg, preventing pivoting movement, in a vertical position.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip down leg rear jack housing with a rotating drive handle to manually extend the rear section of the hinged support base, positioning the castor wheel at the bottom in a deployed position.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an open sided flip-down leg wherein a rear jack housing with rotating drive handle, to manually withdraw the rear section of a hinged support base.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an open sided flip-down leg, with castor wheel deployed, enabling a tongue/frame to be moved as desired.
Another object of the present invention provides for an open sided flip-down leg wherein counter rotation causes complete retraction of a hinged support base and attached castor wheel.

Accordingly the present invention provides an open sided flip-down leg pivotably secured at a pivot means and pivot pin to a tongue/frame in which half-way withdrawal of a hitch pin, utilizing aligned and open hitch means, will drop to a vertical position; this action enables its foot plate to contact a ground surface for support, and be secured to a front angle brace by a catch, leaving a pivoting tongue with towbar/coupler in a transportation mode; rotating the handle causes a rack and pinion, or other preferred means, to move outward from a rear jack housing, activating a triple hinged support base, causing a castor wheel to pivot on its hinges approximately 90 degrees, raising and providing mobility for a tongue/frame; reversing rotation of the handle causes the flip-down leg to return to its original storage position.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a 100 variation or the present invention wherein a jacking mechanism is positioned inside a hollow tube flip-down leg, which in a vertical position, utilizing an elongated square drive socket is ratchet/screwed downward, thereby raising, lowering or supporting the tongue/frame to assist in attaching or detaching a towbar from a tow vehicle.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a 200 variation of the present invention wherein the hollow tube flip down leg is of sufficient width and depth to house a top sidewinder trailer jack with castor wheel, built or installed partially or fully inside which may be deployed to raise the tongue/frame to provide mobility.
Accordingly the present invention provides an open sided flip-down leg for a trailer tongue/frame, wherein a rear jack housing and a hinged support base, having a castor wheel mounted on its front side, in a transportation mode; manual or mechanical manipulation providing geared movement to deploy said hinged support base, positioning said castor wheel at the lower end, raising said tongue/frame providing mobility to an unattached trailer.

Accordingly, the 100 manifestation of the present invention provides a hollow tube flip-down leg, vertically positioned, wherein its jack ground plate is ratcheted or screwed down, utilizing an elongated square drive socket, to raise and support a trailer tongue/frame, and where applicable, both sides of a frame for leveling.
