Abstract

This invention is on the ideas and equipment to be applied to clean, namely pig the downhole wellbore tubing and rod by a set of special equipment tripping periodically in wells with or without rods. This method can do the daily wellbore maintenance and lengthen the run time of wells substantially. A scale or wax trap steel wire line is included in this invention too, trying to solve similar issues.

Description

Down-hole Well-bore Pigging and Scale Trap Wire Line Zhong (Gilbert) Chen 165 Millrise Close, SW, CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA, T2Y 2T4 Gilbertchen168(cD-yahoo.com, 403-988-2899 Description In the processes of water or oil production, the downhole wellbores are often liable to organic and in-organic precipitates and deposits. These precipitates and deposits are sometimes called scales and usually cause much difficulty and extra high cost to maintain the downhole wellbores. In order to maintain production, the wellbores have to be cleaned.

Current downhole wellbore cleaning methods and measures taken are regular well workovers and operations when the wells fail. The cost for workovers and operations are very high and the wells have to be shut in to perform the workovers and operations. Several days are needed to finish those pieces of work. Regular failures of wells due to the scale related issues and regular downtime and regular workovers, operations cause many troubles for related oil and gas companies.

Pigging is an old topic. However, even though pigging has been widely applied in surface and underwater pipelines and associated sets of equipment, pigging has never been applied in downhole wellbores to clean the scales and deposits on the daily bases. From the scaling mechanisms, long term contact, accumulation of scaling substances on tubing and rod attributes to the final failures. The daily or regularly running of downhole wellbore pigging can prevent the chronic accumulation of scaling substances on tubing and rod. Therefore, the scaling substances can be produced to the surface to be treated and the downhole wellbore can be protected from regular failures. The successful application of this idea and associated pigging device can save a lot of time, energy and cost for related oil and gas companies.

A second idea included in this invention is the application of a intertwined or braided steel wire line or cable into the annulus or in the tubing to stimulate the scaling substance accumulation on the braided wire line or cable. The braided wire line or cable can be hoisted periodically from the well bore to be cleaned and then be re-used in the well bore again.

In order to search information on related inventions, the patent database was inquired by inputting key words: pigging, wellbore cleaning, downhole pigging, wellbore pigging, braided wire line, braided cable, intertwined wire line, and intertwined cable. The following are the patent database inquiry results:

By inputting key word pigging: 25 documents were listed out of 2,032,537 patents matched the query. However, none of the existent patent deals with the downhole wellbore pigging as stated in this invention.

By inputting key word wellbore cleaning: 6 documents were listed out of 2,032,537 patents matched the query. However, they all deal with the one time downhole workover and operation and have nothing to do with the ideas and device in this invention.

By inputting key word wellbore pigging: No patents were found matching the query.

By inputting key word downhole pigging: No patents were found matching the query, either.

By inputting key word braided wire line: No patents were found matching the query.

By inputting key word braided cable: 13 documents were listed. No patents dealt with the invented idea in this invention.

By inputting key word intertwined wire line: No patents were found matching the query.

By inputting key word intertwined cable: No patents were found matching the query, either.

Therefore, the comprehensive database query and comparison demonstrated that no patents deal with the downhole wellbore pigging and associated devices.
No patents deal with the downhole wellbore braided, intertwined cable or wire line to trap the scaling substances and wax. Once the braided cable, wire line or meshed steel strap is placed in the wellbore, no matter in the annulus or in the tubing, the scaling substances or wax will adhere to it and accumulate around the cable, wire line or meshed strap. This scaling process will protect the tubing and rod from being scaled off. These creative ideas and device dealt with in this invention is innovative and have the ingenuity.

Drawing This invention raised the idea to apply pigging in downhole wellbores and listed five important principles or requirements for downhole wellbore pigging device.
The proposed concept device single unit is in the drawing Figure.

One is that the device should brush and scrape off the soft, semi-solid scaling substances from the inside surfaces of tubing.

Second is that the device should have a center hole to slide through the rod if the rod is used for PCP pumps. Around the center hole, brush should be installed inside the device to remove the scaling substances around the rod.

Third is that the device should have a receptacle connected to the brushing, scraping part to collect the suspending substances off the surfaces of tubing and rods. The receptacle should have a mesh structure with one way for solids to be retained and fluid flowing through it.

Fourth is that the device should be flexible to be applied not only in vertical wells, but also in direction wells and even horizontal wells.

Fifth is that the pigging device can be retrieved and checked regularly if necessary to unload the retained substances and do the cleaning of the device itself or replacement of some parts.

The invented idea to use braided, intertwined cable or wire line, or meshed steel strap to trap the scaling substances and wax in the downhole wellbore is very simple and straightforward.
