3 DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A trailer apparatus 20 according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown in FIGS. 1-3 and will be understood to comprise a flatbed dump trailer portion 22, a pair of wall portions 24, a rear closure assembly 26, a support assembly 28, a spring-assist mechanism 30 and a locking mechanism 32.
The flatbed trailer portion 22 is shown in these figures with the flatbed horizontally-positioned, but it will be understood that the flatbed can also assume an inclined dump position, described fully hereinafter, through the use of a pneumatic cylinder.
The wall portions 24 are each operatively secured to the flatbed to extend upwardly each from a respective side of the flatbed.
As best seen in FIG. 3, the rear closure assembly 26 has a pair of panels 34 and, hingedly connected to each panel, an extension 36; the hinged connection is provided by a rod 38 carried by the panel 34 about which the extension 36 is journalled.
In a first configuration of the rear closure 26, the panels 34 are disposed in coplanar, side-by-side relation and hinged to the rear end of the flatbed by a pair of pintle bars 40, which couple hinge sockets 42 of the panels with hinge sockets 44 of the flatbed, to provide for movement of the rear closure assembly 26 between a transport position and a loading position. In the loading position, as shown in FIG. 4, the panels 34 extend rearwardly and downwardly from the rear end of the flatbed and each extension 36 extends downwardly, from the lower edge of the panel 34 for which it is provided, to define collectively, in combination with the panels, a pair of ramps 46 leading to the flatbed 47. The hinged connections between the panels 34 and the extensions 36, in addition to providing for said hinged movement, also permit movement of the extensions 36 along the rods 38, to provide for adjustment of the spacing between the pair of ramps 46 in use, i.e. along arrow Y-Yin FIG. 4. This permits vehicles having different wheel spacing to use the ramps to enter and exit the box when the rear closure 26 is in the loading position. The transport position is that shown in FIGS. 1-3 and in this position the panels 34 extend upwardly from the flatbed in the manner of a tailgate and each extension 36 extends downwardly from the upper end of the panel 34 for which it is provided.
4 The locking mechanism 32 permits the extensions 36 to be secured as shown in FIG. 3, and takes the form of a pair of locking pins 48 which engage bores in stubs that extend, from the panels, through corresponding bores defined in the extensions. This avoids, for example, swinging movement of the extensions 36 during movement of the trailer 20, which could cause damage and unnecessary noise.
The support assembly 28 comprises a pair of jack stands disposed beneath the flatbed, which can be selectively extended, as shown in FIG. 5, to support the rear end of the trailer 20 during loading and unloading operations.
The spring-assist mechanism 30 is adapted to apply force to the rear panels 34 to facilitate movement of the rear closure 26 assembly from the loading position to the transport position and comprises, for each sidewall 24, a coil spring, indicated by arrow 50. The coil spring 50 is coupled at one end to the side wall 24 for which it is provided. The other end of the coil spring 50 is coupled, by a cable 52, to the panel 34 which, in the second configuration, is hingedly connected to said wall 24. A
conduit 54, secured to said sidewall 24 and orientated substantially parallel to the flatbed 47, contains the coil spring 50, and, as best seen in FIG. 9, to avoid binding of the cable in use, the cable 52 is coupled to the panel 34 by an eyelet 56 In which the cable 52 terminates; an eyelet 58 carried by the panel 34; and a link 60 for coupling the eyelets 56,58 together. Cable 52 passes through a smooth eyelet 51, to avoid cable wear.
Removal of the pintle bars 40 from the hinge sockets 42,44, and insertion of hinge pins 62 into hinge sockets 64,66 defined on the walls 24 and the panels 34, defines a second configuration of the rear closure 26.
In this configuration, each panel 34 is hingedly connected to a respective wall portion 24 for movement about a respective Z-Z axis, indicated in FIG. 6, which extends normally from the flatbed 37, to permit the rear closure 26 assembly to assume the transport position and to permit pivotal movement of the panels 34 in the manner of side-hinged barn doors.
The trailer 20 Is shown in a dump position in FIG. 7; herein, it will be seen that the flatbed 37 is in the inclined dump position; the extensions 36 are held In nested relation against the panels 34 by the locking mechanism 48; and the panels 34 are swung frontwardly and secured to the sides 24 of the trailer 20 by chains 68.
The trailer 20 has a third configuration wherein the panels 34 and the wall portions 24 define a fixed box trailer and the panels 34 are not movable; this configuration is defined by the presence of the hinge pins 62 and the pintle bars 40 installed in the respective hinges 64,66 and 42,44 of which they form part. The trailer is shown in this configuration in FIGS. 1-2 and 8-9.
Whereas but a single embodiment of the invention is herein shown and described, it will be evident that numerous variations are possible. Accordingly, the invention should be understood as limited only by the accompanying claims, purposively construed.
The support assembly 28 comprises a pair of jack stands disposed beneath the flatbed, which can be selectively extended, as shown in FIG. 5, to support the rear end of the trailer 20 during loading and unloading operations.
