Abstract

This invention allows its user to integrate archery or hunting with recreational kayaking. Kayaks, often small and covered, have little to no room in them to store a bow and if a kayak paddler was to shoot an arrow from their boat they have no safe place to put their paddle while they do so. Through the creation of a bow attachment for paddles, hunters can conveniently move from paddling their kayak to aiming up their prey. Also, when this product is used to shoot at targets on a white water kayaking course, a new and exciting biathlon sporting event is created. The Paddlebow comprises a bow or crossbow which is connected to a clamp extension which protrudes from a circular clamp which is able to clamp to the center of a paddle shaft.

Description

Description:

The Paddlebow is a bow attachment for kayak paddles which is able to propel arrows and attaches to the shaft of a kayak paddle with a clamp.

Background of the Invention:

Kayaks are small human-powered boats which were first used for hunting by indigenous people living in Arctic regions. These boats are commonly propelled using a double-bladed paddle known as a kayak paddle. Modern kayaks and kayak paddles come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are commonly used for recreational purposes.
Throughout history many_cQntmpt ans have bean built withh the purposerQf propelling arrows. Archery is the art, practice or skill of shooting arrows with a bow and is a precision sport. While there is great variety in the construction details of bows, all bows consist of a string attached to elastic limbs which store mechanical energy imparted when the user draws the bow string. Archers may shoot arrows by pulling and releasing the bow string themselves directly but some bows use a mechanism to hold and release the string (eg. Crossbows).
No previous invention allows its users to paddle a kayak and have the ability to shoot an arrow without having to drop their paddle and pick up their bow. New recreational possibilities are born through the creation of The Paddlebow.
Outdoor enthusiasts can use this new piece of equipment for hunting purposes or for kayak/archery biathlon events.

Summary of Invention:

The Paddlebow is a bow which can be easily mounted on the shaft of a paddle and used to shoot arrows. The bow is mounted to a paddle shaft by way of a clamp system.
The Paddlebow allows its users to shift from the action of paddling their kayak to the action of shooting an arrow in a quick and comfortable manor.

Detailed Description of the Invention:

The bow portion of The Paddlebow consists of a string attached at both ends to two elastic limbs. When a user draws back the bow string, energy is stored in the elastic limbs. The elastic limbs are connected to each other at the center of the bow.
When the drawn string is released the bow is able to propel arrows. The bow of a Paddlebow is able to attach to the shaft of a paddle through a clamp system which will be described.
Two Paddlebow model variations will be described: `crossbow type' and `traditional bow type.' For a `crossbow type' shooting action the bow is mounted on a stock which runs perpendicular to the elastic limbs. When a `crossbow type' Paddlebow is attached to a paddle shaft the stock runs perpendicular to the paddle shaft. Stocks can vary in length.
Crossbow stocks contain a mechanism which is able to hold a drawn bow string and a trigger (located near its tail end) which when pulled releases the drawn bow string. The stock of a Paddlebow of this type is attached to a `clamp extension'. A `clamp extension' is a piece that protrudes upward from the clamp system which clamps the shaft of a paddle. The `clamp extension' connects to the bottom of the bow stock. Note that no claims in this patent application are made regarding the specifics of crossbow stock trigger mechanics. (see diagrams 1 and 2) For `traditional bow type' shooting action there is no holding and releasing mechanism involved and the string must be pulled, held, and released directly by the user. In this case the bow attaches directly to the previously described `clamp extension'.
The clamp extension connects to the bow at its center where the two limbs meet. (see diagrams 3 and 4) Paddlebows are constructed such that the bow (described above) should attach to a paddle in the middle of the paddle shaft by way of the clamp extension and clamp. The clamp depicted in the below diagrams is best described as a circular, hinged clamp with a quick release leaver (see diagram 5). The quick release leaver is attached to a screw which tightens the clamp and is similar to the type commonly used for bicycle seat posts.
The clamp is hinged so it can wrap around a paddle shaft. Note that this type of clamp is not a new invention and that the exact type of clamp used in the construction of a Paddlebow is of little importance as far as this patent application is concerned. All that is important is that the Paddlebow clamp is circular and able to tightly grip the shaft of a paddle and can release the shaft of a paddle as well. (see diagrams 2, 4 and 5).
