Abstract

An attachable table. In order to combat the problems of space and mobility with tables 1 have invented a table that can attach to any chair and adjust to the user's precise desires. .
With this attachment a person can turn his or her chair into a desk that can be adjusted vertically, laterally, tilted and swivelled. It will even be able to pivot allowing the table top to be close or far from the user. With all of the possible adjustments people of all sizes can use it.
This table attaches to any chair using the fastening plates (8) on the base (1). The table hinges using an "L" shaped tube (2) secured in position by a locking device (9). Height is adjusted using a pin through hole drilled through tube (3). The table top (7) can be tilted manually by loosening the locking device (11), tilting to desired degree and retightening the locking device. The table can swivel 360 degrees by loosening locking device (10). The table top can be adjusted laterally by manually sliding it right or left as tube (5) slides over tube (4). All corners are rounded and edges are smooth to eliminate sharpness.

Description

SPECIFICATIONS
This invention relates to a manually adjustable attachment used for doing homework or eating in front of a television.

It is common to see adjustable tables used to do homework on or eat in front of a television. These tables are free standing and of a fixed size only. It has been proposed to make a table that can be slid under a chair therefore providing a place to work or a desk that can have a chair slid under it. The desk of course requires that you have enough space for it and you must remain by it in order to use it. The table that slides under your chair confines you in that it is of a certain width and you must contend with the legs being unencumbered by anything. The floor that this table sits on must be level as well in order for the table top to remain level. These lack the convenience and versatility of my attachment.

I have found that these disadvantages could be overcome by making an attachment for chairs that would provide the user with a table top area that can have its height, width and tilt position adjusted to the user's desires as well as swivel out of the way to allow entrance and exiting from chair. This would save space and provide the convenience of a mobile desk or table. This invention allows the user to remove all but the base quickly therefore returning the chair to its original look and purpose.

In drawings which illustrate the embodiments of the invention. Figure 1 is the rear view of all of the sections. Figure 2 is the side view of all of the sections of this embodiment.
Figure 3 is the top view of the sections of this embodiment. Figure 4 is the rear view of the assembled embodiment.
The attachment illustrated is comprised of round tubing place within each other allowing movement and adjustment of the table top to desired position using locking devices listed. The tubes may be of any suitable size but in the form shown the use of :
(1) 18 gauge steel tubing x 1 1/8 inch O.D
(2) 14 gauge steel tubing x 1 inch O.D.
(3) 18 gauge steel tubing x 1 1/8 inch O.D.
(4) 14 gauge steel tubing x 3/4 inch O.D.
(5) 18 gauge steel tubing x 7/8 inch O.D were used for the corresponding components.
The base (1) is attached to the underside of the chair using the attachment plates (8).
Once assembled the table top can be tilted up to 90 degrees by loosening locking device (11) and tilting the table on tube (5) axis. The lateral position of the table can be adjusted by manually sliding the table left or right. This movement is limited only by the length of groove (14) which has spring clip guide (13) sliding within it.
The table can hinge by loosening locking device (9). This allows the table to be closer to or farther away from the user.
The table swivels 360 degrees by loosening locking device (10). The table top's height can be adjusted by placing a pin through the desired hole on tube (3). This pin sits on top of tube (2) giving the user various heights. The size of the pin is limited by the size of the hole and must be of a rigid material and long enough to slide fully through tube (3).

The locking devices used in this application are of the screw handle type with the base nuts being welded to the tubes in the appropriate place. The tubes having holes drilled to allow contact between inner tubes and locking screw. The exception to this is locking device (11) which tightens down to adjusting plate (6).
Adjusting plate (6) has a hole drilled through it at its top large enough to allow tube (4) to fit within it and be welded together. Adjusting plate (6) also has an arc cut from it to allow the tilt to be adjusted 90 degrees.
The table top (7) is attached to tube (5) using attachment plates (15). Tube (5) is then slipped over tube (4) by depressing the spring clip guide (13) in tube (4) and is deemed in the correct position when the spring clip guide (13) becomes fully visible through groove (14).
The table top (7) is of a light rigid material with rounded corners for safety and a ridged edge for keeping articles from sliding off unencumbered.

This invention can be used on swivelling office chair, kitchen table chairs, sides of sofa chairs and any other vertical or horizontal platform where a flat table surface may be desired. A person could use this as a laptop table, a drafting table, painting platform or any other use where a flat platform is needed.

Claims (5)

1. A table attachment in which the following are manually adjustable: tilt, height, lateral position, pivot, and swivel.
2. A table attachment described in 1 that can be attached to a chair, or any vertical or horizontal base and still provide a flat surface to use.
3. A table attachment described in 1 and 2 which is of a component nature and therefore can be dismantled and removed from the base leaving said chair normal in appearance and function.
4. The use of locking devices in the strategic positions as defined by the novel design of the attachment allowing all of the movements listed in 1.
5. This invention demonstrates ingenuity, novelty, and utility of a unique and new nature.
