Description

SCOURING APPARATUS

Technical field The present invention relates to hand-held scouring apparatus for cleaning grills, or the like, and particularly to apparatus having a base to which wire scouring pads are demountably fastened.

Background of the Invention Prior hand-held scouring apparatus for cleaning barbeque grills are known which include a base to which a replaceable wire scouring pad, substantially in the form of a ring, is fixed by a bolt extending through the central void in the pad. A
washer cooperates with the bolt, such that the pad is clamped between the washer and the base. The washer has an annular portion through which the bolt is received and, to grip and prevent rotation of the pad relative to the base, generally radially extending protrusions are provided integral with the washer. The protrusions are equally spaced circumferentially, each being generally T-shaped and having a radially-aligned neck terminating in a head elongated perpendicular to the neck. The heads also project in the axial direction away from the respective necks and have pad-abufting faces aligned in a radial plane.

With use, the wire pads are deformed and eventually damaged, often separating into sections generally around the circumference of the heads. It will be understood that there is a need for scouring apparatus that provides an extended useful life for the scouring pads. The invention seeks to provide an improved scouring apparatus which addresses this need while affording additional structural and operating advantages.
Disclosure of the Invention According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a scouring apparatus comprising:

a base having a handle disposed on a outer side thereof and an opposing inner side, at least one aperture extending between the inner and outer sides, the aperture having a first axis, at least one scouring pad abutting the inner side, the scouring pad being substantially in the form of a ring and having windings of wire substantially concentric with the first axis, a clamping member having a frusto-conical face substantially symmetrical with the first axis, an annular face of the clamping member abutting the scouring pad, a plurality of points extending substantially in the axial direction from the annular face, and complementary first and second screw-threaded means, wherein one of the first and second screw-threaded means extends through the scouring pad and the base and one of the first and second screw-threaded means engages with the outer side, the first and second screw-threaded means cooperating to hold the scouring pad against the inner side.

Preferably the points are substantially conical, the frusto-conical face tapers between a wider end and a narrower end and the annular face bounds the narrower end and is aligned radially, a recess in the wider end is bisected by a first elongate member having two radially-extending rib portions aligned to be substantially collinear and the first screw-threaded means includes a second elongate member having two radially-extending rib portions aligned to be substantially collinear, whereby the first elongate member may be grasped to hold the clamping member while the second elongate member is grasped to turn the first screw-threaded means Preferably both the first and second ribs include a central portion to either side of which the radially-extending portions protrude, the central portion having a wider transverse dimension than the adjacent radially-extending portions, and wherein the first screw-threaded means has a convex face engaging a recess in the outer side.
Preferably the first screw-threaded means comprises an internal screw thread and the second screw-threaded means comprises a fastener having an external screw thread rotationally fast with the clamping member.

Preferably the points are arranged concentrically in inner and outer circles, each point in the outer circle being angularly offset from adjacent points in the inner circle.
This invention provides a scouring apparatus which is effective and efficient in operational use, and which may be economically manufactured. By clamping ring-shaped scouring pads with the apparatus of the invention has been found to improve the life of the pads and it is believed that this may be due to more accurate location of the pads and a reduction in localised deformation of the pads by the pad-abutting faces. Moreover, pads may be simply and quickly replaced using the scouring apparatus of the invention, without the need for tools.

Description of the Preferred Embodiments Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, scouring apparatus 1 includes a base 2, a handle 3, two scouring pads 4 each fixed by a respective clamping member 5 and a fastener 26 having first screw-threaded means in the form of a female screw thread (not shown).
The base 2 has the form of a generally rectangular prism, with radiused edges and opposing planar outer and inner sides 6 and 7 respectively. The handle 3 includes an elongate central portion 8 extending longitudinally and spaced apart from 5 the outer side 6, and fixed by leg portions 9 at its opposing ends to longitudinally opposing ends of the base 2. The handle 3 lies generally in a plane extending in the longitudinal direction of the base 2 perpendicular to the outer side 6. Two apertures 10a, 10b extend between the inner and outer sides 6, 7 and have respective axes 11 lying in the central longitudinal plane bisecting the base. A recesses 12 is formed in the outer face 6 coaxial with the each of the apertures 10a, 10b. The base 2 and handle 3 may be integrally moulded form a polymer.

As used herein, the term "axiaP" refers to a direction substantially parallel to the axis 11. The term "radiaP" refers to a direction substantially orthogonal to the axis 11.

The scouring pads 4 of Figs. 1 and 2 are made up of windings 12 of looped wire.
The loops (not shown) of the wire cause the windings to bind with one with another.
The windings are generally concentric so that the pad is substantially in the form of a toroidal ring with a central void. For example, the wire from which the pads are made is a stainless steel wire of very thin flat cross section.

The clamping member 5 is best seen in Figs 3-7, and includes a frusto-conical face symmetrical with the axis 11 and tapering between a wider end 14 and a narrower end 15. An annular face 16 bounds the narrower end 15 and is aligned radially for abutting the scouring pad 4. A plurality of conical points 17 extend axially from the annular face 16 and have like form and dimensions, with coplanar tips18. The points 17 are arranged concentrically about axis 11 in inner and outer circles 19, 20. The points in the two circles are staggered angularly with respect to the axis 11, with each point in the outer circle 20 angularly offset from the radial line on which adjacent points in the inner circle 191ie.

A recess 21 in the wider end 14 is bisected by a first elongate member 22 having two radially-extending portions 23, 24 each comprising a pair of ribs 23a, 23b 24a, 24b aligned to be substantially collinear and protruding either side of a central portion 25.
The central portion 25 has opposing protruding arcuate surfaces 25a of wider transverse dimension than the adjacent radially-extending portions 23, 24, the arcuate surfaces 25a intersecting with the longitudinal surfaces 23a, 24a on either side of the radially-extending portions 23, 24.

The second screw-threaded means is in the form of a shaft 28 having an external screw thread. The threaded shaft 28 extends axially from the face 16 and is rotationally fast with the clamping member 5.

Referring to Figs 8-11, the fastener 26 includes an internal screw thread 30 for engaging the threaded shaft 28. The fastener 26 has a convex face 31 symmetrical about the axis 11 and of complementary shape to the recess 12. Opposing the face 31 is a radially-aligned face 32 from which a second member 33 protrudes. The second member 33 is elongate perpendicular to the axis 11 and includes two radially-extending rib portions 34, 35 aligned to be substantially collinear and protruding either side of a central portion 36. The central portion 36 has opposing protruding arcuate surfaces 36a of wider transverse dimension than the adjacent radially-extending portions 34, 35, the arcuate surfaces 36a intersecting with the longitudinal surfaces 33a, 34a on either side of the radially-extending portions 34, 35.
In use, each pad 4 is fixed to the base 2 by inserting the shaft 8 through the central void in the pad, the respective aperture 10a, 10b to engage the female thread 30 in the fastener 26. By grasping the surfaces 23a, 24a the clamping member 5 can be held against the torque applied by grasping the surfaces 33a, 34a of the fastener 26 and tightening it. The frusto-conical face 13 centres each pad accurately and the points 17 bind with the wire of the pad 5, and particularly with the loops of the wire to firmly hold the pad 5, while largely avoiding localised deformation of the wires or pads.

Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it should be appreciated that modifications and additions may be made thereto without departing from the scope thereof.
