Abstract
There is disclosed a solid substance comprised by more than one half by weight of hollow carbon nanotubes having walls consisting essentially of two layers of carbon atoms. Also disclosed are substantially pure double-walled nanotubes. Still further a composition is disclosed which comprises double-walled nanotubes and single-walled nanotubes wherein the ratio of the number of double-walled nanotubes to single-walled nanotubes is about 1.
Claims (7)
1. A solid substance comprised by more than one half by weight of hollow carbon nanotubes having walls consisting essentially of two layers of carbon atoms.
2. Substantially pure double-walled nanotubes.
3. The double-walled nanotubes, according to Claim 2 wherein single walled nanotubes are additionally present and the ratio of the number of double-walled nanotubes to single-walled nanotubes exceeds 30:1.
4. The double-walled nanotubes according to Claim 2 consisting of two concentric nearly cylindrical graphene layers, wherein the diameter of the outer layer ranges between 3.4 to 5.5 nm and the diameter of the inner layer ranges between 2.7 to 4.7 nm.
5. The double-walled nanotubes according to Claim 4 wherein the inter-layer distance ranges from 0.39 to 0.41 nm.
6. The double-walled nanotubes according to Claim 3 wherein the ratio of the number of double-walled nanotubes to single-walled nanotubes is 15:1.
7. A composition comprising double-walled nanotubes and single-walled nanotubes wherein the ratio of the number of double-walled nanotubes to single-walled nanotubes is about 1.
