Abstract
A method, and a computer readable medium for performing the method, for selecting drilling operating parameters for a drilling unit comprises characterizing at least one drilling response parameter with respect to lithology, when a parameter related to drill string dissipative motion falls below a selected threshold; measuring the drilling response parameter during drilling and determining lithology from the measured drilling response parameter; selecting at least one drilling operating parameter to optimize at least one drilling response parameter when a parameter related to drill string dissipative motion falls below a selected threshold for the determined lithology; and using the optimized drilling response parameter to operate the drilling unit so as to minimize the drill string dissipative motion. The invention provides improved accuracy and efficiency in operating the drilling unit.
