Abstract

An aircraft propulsion system having a single engine located centrally inside the fuselage of the aircraft and preferably behind the passenger compartment, the engine attached to a transmission which directs engine power to two counter-rotating propfans or ducted fans mounted on the fuselage. The two counter-rotating propfans are surrounded by cylindrical shrouds comprising sound attenuation material in assemblies. The aircraft propulsion system reduces noise and vibration and improves the aerodynamics of the aircraft.

Claims (18)

1. A propulsion system for an aircraft comprising two wings, an elevator and a fuselage, the propulsion system comprising:
an engine disposed within the fuselage;
a transmission attached to the engine directing power to two propfans mounted on the fuselage.
2. The propulsion system of claim 1 wherein the two propfans counter-rotate.
3. The propulsion system of claim 1 or 2 wherein the two propfans are mounted on the fuselage above the wing plane.
4. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the two propfans are mounted on the fuselage aft of the wings.
5. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the engine is positioned at the lowest point horizontally within the fuselage.
6. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 5 further comprising two propfan assemblies.
7. The propulsion system of claim 6 wherein each propfan assembly comprises one of the propfans and a cylindrical shroud surrounding the propfan.
8. The propulsion system of claim 7 wherein the shroud comprises sound attenuation material.
9. The propulsion system of any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein each of the propfan comprises two rows of blades on a rotatable shaft wherein each row of blades comprises 6 blades.
10. The propulsion system of any one of claims 6 to 9 wherein the propfan assemblies are positioned adjacent to the fuselage within free-stream air flowing around the aircraft in flight.
11. The propulsion system of any one of claims 6 to 10 wherein each of the propfan assemblies further comprising a stator assembly positioned downstream of the propfan, the stator assembly comprising at least one stator.
12. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 11 wherein the engine is a gasoline engine.
13. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 11 wherein the engine is a diesel engine
14. The propulsion system of claims 12 or 13 wherein the engine is mounted on isolation dampers.
15. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 14 further comprising an exhaust silencing system.
16. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 15 further comprising a liquid cooling system wherein coolant from the liquid cooling system is used for engine cooling, de-icing, and cabin heating.
17. The propulsion system of any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein the engine and propfan assemblies are positioned to place the weight of the engine and profane assemblies slightly aft of the centre of lift of the aircraft and ahead of the pivot point of the elevator.
18. An aircraft comprising a propulsion system according to any one of claims 1 to 17.
