Abstract
A CELP speech coder/decoder capable of accepting a quantization algorithm in a quantizing section using a multi-stage predictive vector quantization method. The vector quantization of a target is carried out in the multistage predictive vector quantization. The target is obtained and is further vector-quantized. A vector of a first target vector is predicted by a predicting section. The searching section carries out the decoding of the vector using decoded vectors from vector codebooks based on the codes for codevector A and codevector B. The amplitude is obtained from the amplifer storing section and past-decoded vectors stored in the state storing section. The apparatus and method reduce the coded distortion. The apparatus may be employed in speech coding and/or decoding for music, images, or in cellular phones.
Claims (4)
1. A vector quantizatlon apparatus for performing coding of a target vector by multi-stage vector quantization, the apparatus comprising:
a first quantizing section for performing a first stage of the coding of the target vector using a first code vector stored in a first codebook;
an amplifier storing section for storing a scalar associated with a code of each first code vector, and a second quantizing section for determining a third code vector by multiplying a second code vector stored in a second codebook and the scalar together, performing distance calculation using the target vector, the first code vector, and the third code vector and performing a second stage of the coding of the target vector using a result of the distance calculation.

an amplifier storing section for storing a scalar associated with a code of each first code vector, and a second quantizing section for determining a third code vector by multiplying a second code vector stored in a second codebook and the scalar together, performing distance calculation using the target vector, the first code vector, and the third code vector and performing a second stage of the coding of the target vector using a result of the distance calculation.
2. The vector quantization apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the second code vector stored in the second codebook is obtained by a computation using an amount of sample vectors for learning.
3. A vector quantization method for performing coding of a target vector by multi-stage vector quantization, the method comprising the steps of:
reading a first code vector from a first codebook and performing a first stage of the coding of the target vector using the first code vector, reading a scalar associated with a code of each first code vector from an amplifier storage;
reading a second code vector from a second codebook, and determining a third code vector by multiplying the second code vector and the scalar together;
performing distance calculation using the target vector, the first code vector and the third code vector, performing a second stage of the coding of the target vector using a result of the distance calculation.

reading a second code vector from a second codebook, and determining a third code vector by multiplying the second code vector and the scalar together;
performing distance calculation using the target vector, the first code vector and the third code vector, performing a second stage of the coding of the target vector using a result of the distance calculation.
4. The vector quantization method according to claim 3, wherein the second code vector stored in the second codebook is obtained by a computation using an amount of sample vectors for learning.
