Abstract
A notification system and method for a mobile data communication device is provided. A client-based software program operates at the mobile communication device to manage and execute user-selectable notification schemes ("notification module") in response to data items transmitted to the mobile device from a host system via a communications network. The user configures the notification module to execute certain audible, visual and/or tactile notifications in response to certain types of messages being received at the mobile device.
Claims (26)
1. A method of replicating data items from a computer system to a mobile data communication device, comprising:
automatically detecting arrival of the data items at the computer system;
characterizing the data items based on a characterization scheme; and redirecting the characterized data items from the computer system to the mobile data communication device, wherein the characterization scheme is adapted to correspond with a user-selectable notification scheme operable at the mobile data communication device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the data items are selected from at least one of e-mail messages, calendar events, meeting notifications, address entries, journal entries, personal reminders, and instant messaging notifications.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein the characterizing further comprises categorizing a data item based on the type of the data item.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein the characterizing further comprises categorizing a data item based on a priority associated with the data item.
5. The method of claim 4, wherein the priority of the data item is selected from one of the categories: regular, very high and emergency.
6. The method of claim 1, further comprising: adding at least one of a unique data item identifier and a unique priority ranking identifier in a header field of a particular data item prior to redirecting the characterized data item.
7. A system for replicating data items from a computer system to a mobile data communication device, comprising:
means for automatically detecting arrival of the data items at the computer system;
means for characterizing the data items based on a characterization scheme;
and means for redirecting the characterized data items from the computer system to the mobile data communication device, wherein the characterization scheme is adapted to correspond with a user-selectable notification scheme operable at the mobile data communication device.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the data items are selected from at least one of e-mail messages, calendar events, meeting notifications, address entries, journal entries, personal reminders, and instant messaging notifications.
9. The system of claim 7, wherein the means for characterizing further comprises means for categorizing a data item based on the type of the data item.
10. The system of claim 7, wherein the means for characterizing further comprises means for categorizing a data item based on a priority associated with the data item.
11. The system of claim 10, wherein the priority of the data item is selected from one of the categories: regular, very high and emergency.
12. The system of claim 7, further comprising means for adding at least one of a unique data item identifier and a unique priority ranking identifier in a header field of a particular data item prior to redirecting the characterized data item.
13. A message notification method operating at a mobile data communication device, comprising:
receiving data items redirected from a computer system;
determining if the data items include characterization information based on a characterization scheme; and if so, extracting the characterization information and comparing the characterization information to a plurality of stored notification schemes at the mobile data communication device to provide an appropriate alert associated with a select notification scheme.

14. The message notification method of claim 13, wherein the data items are selected from at least one of e-mail messages, calendar events, meeting notifications, address entries, journal entries, personal reminders, and instant messaging notifications.
15. The message notification method of claim 13, wherein the characterization information comprises at least one of a unique data item identifier and a unique priority ranking identifier in a header field of a particular data item.
16. The message notification method of claim 13, further comprising:
upon determining that the received data items do not include characterization information, characterizing the received data items based on a local characterization scheme executing on the mobile data communication device; and applying a corresponding notification scheme based on reviewing the plurality of stored notification schemes at the mobile data communication device.

17. The message notification method of claim 13, wherein the alert comprises at least one of an audible alert, a visual alert and a vibration alert.
18. The message notification method of claim 17, wherein the audible alert comprises one or more tunes.
19. The message notification method of claim 17, wherein the audible alert comprises one or more verbal notifications.
20. A mobile data communication device, comprising:
means for receiving data items redirected from a computer system;
means for determining if the data items include characterization information based on a characterization scheme;
means for storing a plurality of notification schemes; and means for extracting the characterization information from the data items and comparing the characterization information to the plurality of stored notification schemes to provide an appropriate alert associated with a select notification scheme.

22. The mobile data communication device of claim 20, wherein the characterization information comprises at least one of a unique data item identifier and a unique priority ranking identifier in a header field of a particular data item.
23. The mobile data communication device of claim 20, further comprising:
means, operable responsive to determining that the received data items do not include characterization information, for characterizing the received data items based on a local characterization scheme executing on the mobile data communication device; and means for applying a corresponding notification scheme based on reviewing the plurality of notification schemes stored at the mobile data communication device.
