Description

METHOD AND NETWORK FOR SENDING SHORT MESSAGE BY
SUBSCRIBER OUTSIDE TRUNKING GROUP TO SUBSCRIBER IN THE
TRUNKING GROUP

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to short message transmission technology in a trunking system, and particularly, to a method and a network for sending a short message by a subscriber outside a trunking group to a subscriber in the trunking group.

Backp-round of the Invention A trunking wireless communication system has emerged along with the development of radio communication technology. The trunking wireless communication system is called as trunking system in short. The trunking system is an economical and flexible dispatching communication system developing in recent years, it is widely employed in many fields to meet the demands of internal communication thereof, such as, government agencies, fields of energy and transportation, airports, docks, plants, mines, fire protection agencies, police stations, irrigation works and military units.

In a conventional trunking system, each trunking group has a group identity (ID) and a group call area defined as a group of cells. Such information is saved in a Home Location Register (HLR) and a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card when a subscriber is entitled.

Figure 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating the structure of a core network of the trunking system. As shown in Figure 1, the HLR stores information of a subscriber including the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and a list of the trunking group ID to which the subscriber belongs. The Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSC) is connected to an external network and to an Anchor MSC which manages and maintains a certain Voice Group Call Service (VGCS). The relay MSCs include all MSCs except the Anchor MSC in the group call area which covers multiple MSCs, and the Anchor MSC and the relay MSCs are in the one-to-multiple tree structure. The Visitor Location Registers (VLR) store the IMSI of the subscriber and the list of the trunking group ID
to which the subscriber belongs, and the IMSI of the subscriber and the list of the trunking group ID are copied from the HLR when the subscriber roams. The Group Call Registers (GCRs) store a list of group call references including the trunking group IDs and group call area IDs. A
GCR connected to the Anchor MSC further stores a list of dispatchers, a list of the relay MSCs, a list of the cells managed by the Anchor MSC directly and the information on whether a group call of the trunking group has been established, while a GCR
connected to a relay MSC stores an address of the Anchor MSC related to the trunking group and a list of the cells inside the coverage of the relay MSC.

Upon receiving a group call request, the Anchor MSC inquires about the group call attributes from the GCR connected to the Anchor MSC and obtains the list of the dispatchers, the list of the relay MSCs, the list of the cells inside the coverage of the Anchor MSC and the information on whether the group call of the trunking group with the group call reference has been established. If no group call has been established in the trunking group with the group call reference, the Anchor MSC establishes a VGCS call, i.e., the Anchor MSC initiates calls to the dispatchers and the relay MSCs. The relay MSCs establish a group call channel in each of the cells inside the coverage of the relay MSCs, notify the subscriber in the trunking group on Notification Channels (NCHs) of the cells that a group call has been initiated, and indicate the group call channel to which the subscriber in the trunking group may listen. If a group call has been established in the trunking group with the group call reference, the Anchor MSC initiates calls to the dispatchers, preempts a group call channel; furthermore the Anchor MSC initiates calls to the relay MSCs directly, notifies the subscriber in the trunking group in the cells of the trunking group inside the coverage of the relay MSCs that a group call has been set up, and indicates the group call channel to which the subscriber in the trunking group may listen.

When a group call has been established in the trunking group, a subscriber in the trunking group may send a short message to other subscribers in the trunking group by preempting the group call channel; if no group call has been established in the trunking group, a subscriber in the trunking group may initiate a group call establishment process and send a short message to other subscribers in the trunking group through the group call channel established.

However, a subscriber outside the trunking group shall send short messages to the subscriber in the trunking group through a different process. Figure 2 is a flowchart illustrating that a subscriber outside the trunking group sends a short message to subscribers
2 in the trunking group. The process is described below.

In Step 200, the subscriber outside the trunking group sends the short message to the Service Centre used for Short Message Service (SC) in the network of the trunking system, and the short message carries the group call reference of a destination trunking group.

In Step 201, the SC stores the short message, and the network determines whether a group call has been established already in the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference carried in the short message. If yes, perform Step 202;
otherwise, perform Step 203.

In Step 202, through the group call channel of the trunking group, the network delivers the short message stored in the SC to the subscriber in the trunking group on the group call channel downlink of each cell in the group call area of the trunking group.

In Step 203: the network is in the state of waiting for the trunking group to establish a group call, and delivers the short message stored in the SC to the subscriber in the trunking group on the group call channel downlink of each cell in the group call area of the trunking group after a group call is established in the trunking group.

The inventor of the present invention finds that, according to the technical scheme above for sending the short message, after the subscriber outside the trunking group sends the short message, the time when the short message reaches the subscriber in the trunking group can not be determined. If no group call has been established in the destination trunking group, the transmission of the short message will be delayed for several hours or even several days. How long the transmission of the short message will be delayed depends on when a group call is established in the trunking group. Furthermore, as the transmission of the short message is delayed, the short message is stored in the SC for a long time, which wastes the storage space of the SC.

Therefore how to send a short message instantly by a subscriber outside a trunking group to the subscriber in the trunking group is a problem to be solved urgently.

Summary of the Invention Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for sending a short message
3 by a subscriber outside a trunking group to a subscriber in the trunking group. Through the method a subscriber outside a trunking group may send a short message to the subscriber in the trunking group instantly, therefore the short message transmission will not be delayed and the storage space of the SC will be saved.

According to the method for sending a short message by a subscriber outside a trunking group to a subscriber in the trunking group, upon receive a short message from the subscriber outside the trunking group, a network sends the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group on an existing group call channel in a cell in a group call area of the trunking group if a group call has been established; the network establishes a group call in the trunking group and sends the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group on a group call channel established in a cell in the group call area of the trunking group if no group call has been established.

It can be seen from the embodiment that, when the subscriber outside the trunking group sends a short message to subscribers in the trunking group through the network and no group call has been established in the trunking group, the network will initiatively establish a group call in the trunking group and then send the short message through the group call established by the network to the subscriber in the trunking group.
According to the embodiment of the present invention, when no group call has been established in the destination trunking group of the short message, the short message will still be sent through the group call established by the network, instead of being sent only when a group call has been established in the trunking group, thus the short message will not be delayed. Hence the subscriber outside the trunking group is enabled to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group in time, the short message transmission delay is prevented and the storage space of the SC is saved.

Brief Description of the Drawin2s Figure 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating the structure of a core network of a trunking system.

Figure 2 is a conventional flowchart illustrating that a subscriber outside a trunking group sends a short message to subscribers in the trunking group.

Figure 3 is a flowchart illustrating that a subscriber outside a trunking group sends a
4 short message to subscribers in the trunking group according to an embodiment of the present invention.

Embodiments of the Invention Embodiments of the present invention are described in detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings so as to make the technical solution and merits thereof more apparent.

In an embodiment of the present invention, when a subscriber outside a trunking group sends a short message to subscribers in the trunking group through the network, and if no group call has been established in the trunking group, the network initiatively establishes a group call in the trunking group and then send the short message through the group call established by the network to subscribers in the trunking group. Figure 3 is a flowchart illustrating the above method, the process is described below.

In Step 300, the subscriber outside the trunking group sends the short message to the SC of the network, the short message carrying the group call reference of the destination trunking group.

In Step 301, the SC of the network stores the short message, and the network determines an Anchor MSC according to the group call reference carried in the short message.

In Step 302, the Anchor MSC inquires the GCR about the group call state of the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference according to the group call reference.

In Step 303, the GCR determines whether the group call corresponding to the group call reference has been established in the trunking group, according to the information stored in advance on whether a group call of the trunking group with the group call reference has been established. If the group call corresponding to the group call reference has been established, perform Step 304; otherwise, perform Step 305.

In Step 304, the GCR sends information to the Anchor MSC. The information indicates that the group call of the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference has been established. The Anchor MSC adopts the group call channel of each cell in the group call area of the trunking group according to the related art, and sends on the group call channel downlink the short message stored in the SC to the subscriber in the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference. Then Step 308 is performed.

The group call channel downlink may be a Slow Associated Control Channel (SACCH) associated with a Traffic Channel (TCH).

In Step 305, the GCR sends information to the Anchor MSC. The information indicates that no group call of the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference has been established. The Anchor MSC establishes a group call in the trunking group corresponding to the group call reference upon receiving the information, i.e., establishes a group call channel.

As the temporary Voice Group Call Service (VGCS) call established for transmitting the short message does not transmit voice and need not satisfy the preemption demand of other subscribers in the trunking group, the temporary VGCS call may also be replaced by a Voice Broadcast Service (VBS) call which adopts the same process as the VBS
calls in the related art.

The group call channel established in Step 305 may be the SACCH or a Stand-alone Dedicated Control Channel (SDCCH) not associated with a TCH, as the group call channel established need not transmit voice services.

In Step 306, the Anchor MSC sends notification messages carrying both the group call reference of the trunking group and group call channel establishment information on the NCH of the cells in the group call area of the trunking group.

In Step 307, the Anchor MSC sends the short message on the group call channel downlink of the cells in the group call area of the trunking group. The group call channel downlink may be the SDCCH.

In Step 308, upon sending the short message, the Anchor MSC notifies the SC
that the short message has been sent so that the SC deletes the short message and releases the storage space.

According to the method shown in Figure 3, since the short message is sent without acknowledgement, the Anchor MSC may send the short message for several times in Step 307. In such a case, the short message carries a short message ID, and the subscriber's terminal determines, based on the short message ID while receiving a short message, whether the short message with the same short message ID has been accepted already, such that the subscriber in the trunking group will not accept the same short message repeatedly.

Further, the group call in the trunking group should be released after the network sends the short message on the group call channel of the trunking group. There are three methods in the related art for releasing a group call. In a first method, the subscriber initiating the group call can release the on-going group call. In a second method, the dispatchers which are allowed to terminate the group call in the trunking group can release the on-going group call. In a third method, the network, i.e., the Anchor MSC of the trunking system, releases the on-going group call upon detecting that the on-going group call is inactive for a predetermined period of time. In the embodiment of the present invention, the group call may be released through any of the three methods above.

Alternatively, the group call may also be released by the network which sends the short message, i.e., the Anchor MSC of the trunking system. In this embodiment, all group call channels established and notification channels in the group call area of the trunking group are released in the group call release process. This group call release process is similar to the above third method.

In another embodiment, the right to send the short message by a subscriber outside the trunking group to a subscriber in the trunking group may be assigned so as to ensure the security of the trunking system. As a result, not all subscribers outside the trunking group can send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group.

The main step is similar to Steps 301 - 308, the difference is: the network may save a list of subscribers which are outside the trunking group and permitted to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group. Thus, when a subscriber outside the trunking group sends a short message, the network first determines whether the subscriber outside the trunking group is permitted to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group based on the list saved. If the subscriber outside the trunking group is permitted to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group, perform the processes following Step 301 shown in Figure 3, otherwise, terminate the process.

The list of the subscribers described in above paragraph may be saved in the GCRs of the network. The list may be saved when the subscribers outside the trunking group which are permitted to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group are entitled, or when the subscribers outside the trunking group which are permitted to send the short message to the subscriber in the trunking group are deleted or modified.

In another embodiment, the right to initiate a group call in the trunking group by a subscriber outside the trunking group may also be assigned so that not all subscribers outside the trunking group can initiate a group call in the trunking group.

The main step is similar to Step 301 - 308, the difference is: the network may save a list of subscribers outside the trunking group which are permitted to initiate a group call in the trunking group. In such a case, when a subscriber outside the trunking group sends a short message, the network determines whether the subscriber outside the trunking group is permitted to initiate a group call through the trunking system based on the list saved. If the subscriber outside the trunking group is permitted to initiate a group call through the trunking system, perform Step 305 and follow-up processes shown in Figure 3;
otherwise, terminate the process.

The list of the subscribers described in above paragraph may be saved in the GCRs of the network. The list may be saved when the subscribers outside the trunking group which are permitted to initiate a group call in the trunking group are entitled, or when the subscribers outside the trunking group which have been permitted to initiate a group call in the trunking group are deleted or modified.

According to the embodiments of the present invention, the network establishes an SDCCH to transmit the short message while establishing the group call in the trunking group so that the time for establishing the group call is saved. Furthermore, through the method provided by the embodiment of the present invention, the right to send a short message and the right to initiate a group call establishment process can be assigned to the subscriber outside the trunking group respectively so as to ensure that only the subscriber with the right is able to send a short message. The group call in the trunking group shall be established throughthe network when the short message is sent, which further enhances the security of short message transmission in the trunking system.

To sum up, the forgoing are only embodiments of the present invention, but nof for use in limiting the protection scope of the present invention. All the modifications, equivalent replacements or improvements in the scope of the sprit and principles of the present s invention shall be included in the protection scope thereof.
