Abstract
The present invention provides a means of strengthening housing support members of security trailers or security trailer tongues where the top and bottom of said members have been partially cut away to allow the tongue to pivot to the vertical position. Accordingly, it may take the form of an adequate forward extension of said members, which makes it unnecessary to cut out the bottom section of that extended portion. In addition, a support angle brace may be welded on the lower front corner of said members, positioned so as not to interfere with the operation of the device. Single pole security trailer tongues, or conversion kits thereof, may have a handle attached to that angle support brace, to provide a means for lifting the tongue and pulling, or otherwise maneuvering the trailer.
Description
SECURITY TRAILER AND SECURITY TRAILER TONGUE SUPPORTS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a towable apparatus such as a trailer with a folding, support and/or security tongue, that may be used in transporting any type of equipment or materials.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The presently designed forward housing section of both the security trailer frame, (which utilizes a Y" configured tongue), and single pole security tongue, have been cut away at the top and bottom, to permit the tongue, or leg/tongue to pivot to a vertical position. This may compromise the overall strength of the general area and necessitate the utilization of a heavier gauge material to give sufficient support to said support member.
The present invention evolved from Canadian patent No. 2,460,262 MULTIPLE USE ADJUSTABLE SECURITY TRAILER FOR TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE AND HOUSING, and application No. 2,567,427 FOLDING, SUPPORT AND SECURITY TRAILER TONGUE. by the same inventor and seeks to address additional claims relating to both the single pole security trailer tongue and security trailers with "Y" configured tongues.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a means of strengthening the housing support members that have been partially cut away, both top and bottom, at the pivot points of both the Y" configured security trailers and single pole security trailer tongues.
It is an object of the present invention to provide strength and stability to said support members, by extending the sides and bottom of said members a sufficient distance forward, making it unnecessary to remove part of the front bottom section of said support member.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a support angle brace which may be welded across the lower front section of said support members.
This support angle brace may be modified in size and function to accommodate other features, such as safety chains for towing, or it may be adapted to other types or sizes of trailers or trailer tongues.
It is an object of the present invention to provide, for single pole security trailer tongues, an angle brace, at the lower front corner of said tongue, which is also a handle, providing a means with which to lift the tongue and pull, or otherwise maneuver the trailer.
It is an object of the present invention to provide, for "Y" configured trailer tongues, a welded angle brace, at the lower front corner of each side housing support member, where said tongue pivots on the frame.
Accordingly the present invention provides a support angle brace which strengthens said support members but does not impede the function of either of these trailer and trailer tongue designs.
It is also an object of the present invention to illustrate that, providing the support member or tongue housing protrudes far enough forward, the sides and a portion of the bottom front section need not be removed.
Additional objects and advantages may become apparent from a careful reading of the detailed description provided herein, with appropriate reference to the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side/frontal view of the existing trailer housing member (excluding the flip-down leg) with the addition of a primary feature of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side/frontal view of the same illustration with a secondary feature of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a side/frontal view which demonstrates the positioning of the present invention in the towing position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to Figure 1, the forward end of the existing trailer housing member (1), or trailer tongue housing, was terminated at a point approximately even with the front side of the support leg/tongue (2). Therefore, said member was cut away at both the top side (8) and the underside (6). This necessitated utilizing a heavier gauge of metal in the fabrication of said member, in order to achieve acceptable strength and stability for the unit. The primary feature of the present invention provides for a forward extension of said member (1) a sufficient distance to provide a suitable base strengthening section (3).
Referring now to Figure 2, the secondary feature of the present invention is demonstrated and consists of a metal angle with an attached handle (9), which may be welded across the lower front end of said member (1) giving additional support and strength to the area (3).
Referring to Figure 3, the secondary feature (9) of the present invention is positioned sufficiently low on the front corner of the housing member (1) so that it does not interfere with the support leg/tongue (2) when it is pivoted on the pivot pin (4) to the towing position, and it allows the lower end of said leg/tongue to be fully housed in said member, with holes aligned (7) to receive a hitch pin. Also, it allows the locking brackets (5), to move to their full point of alignment.
