Abstract
An apparatus for displaying information in respect of foods such as ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like contained and dispensable from cylindrical upright containers is provided. The containers each having an upper rim defining an upper access opening to said foods therein and the apparatus comprises: a cover insertable over the outer edge of the rim of said container and being releasable securable against the wall of the container. The cover defines a central opening mating with upper access opening of the container and includes an upper flat horizontal surface surrounding the opening and an upper bead extending around an outer perimeter of the horizontal surface. A flat plastic sheet including flavour indicia upon at least one side thereof matches the shape of the horizontal surface and is postionable such that it rests flush against the horizontal surface and may be removable therefrom. In an example use of the invention, each container includes a different flavour of ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like therein, and each said flat sheet indicates each said respective flavour with the plurality of containers being aligned together by mating the sides of the covers of adjacent containers together.

FLAVOUR DISPLAY APPARATUS FOR DISPENSIBLE FOOD
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] This invention relates to an apparatus for the improved display of flavour of dispensible food, such as frozen food products.

[0001] This invention relates to an apparatus for the improved display of flavour of dispensible food, such as frozen food products.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Ice cream and/or frozen yogurt or the like is often offered for sale to consumers at the retail level in large upright cylindrical containers. Typically, a number of these upright containers are presented in a display freezer which typically includes a bottom portion in which the upright containers are stored and an upper glass portion on the freezer, the upper glass portion including a display side and an access door on the other. Open containers of various flavours are aligned in the freezer. The consumer may view the open containers of ice cream through the display side of the glass portion, and the desired ice cream or frozen yogurt is dispensed through the access door. A common method of displaying the flavours of each container is to affix labels on the glass portion or freezer wall near each container, allowing the consumer to view the ice cream and identify its flavour based on the label attached to the glass portion. There is a need for an improved method of displaying flavours of ice cream and frozen yogurt or the like. More generally, there is also a need for improved display of information and flavours of foods dispensable from upright containers and stored in display boxes or fridges.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
_ [0004] An improved flavour display system for dispensable foods, including ice cream or frozen yogurt or the like forms one aspect for the invention. An advantage of this invention allows flavour indicators to be positioned directly adjacent to each container of ice cream and being easily replaceable and washable.
[0006] In accordance with an aspect of the invention there is provided, an apparatus for displaying flavour information in respect of frozen foods such as ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like contained and dispensable from upright containers, said containers each having an upper rim defining an upper access opening to said frozen foods therein, said apparatus comprising: a cover insertable over the rim of said container and being releasable securable to the container, said cover defining a central opening mating with upper access opening of the container, the cover including an inner upwardly extending bead, defining the central opening, an upper flat horizontal surface surrounding the inner bead and opening of the cover and an upwardly extending outer bead extending around an outer perimeter of the horizontal surface, the inner bead positioned upon or adjacent said rim when the cover is positioned on the container; and a flat plastic sheet including flavour indicia upon at least one side thereof, said sheet matching the shape of the horizontal surface, positionable between the inner and outer beads, such that it rests flush against the horizontal surface between the rim of the container and the bead of the horizontal surface.

It should be understood that reference to the term ice cream or frozen yogurt is intended to refer to any dispensable frozen products stored and dispensed from upright containers.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
_ [0004] An improved flavour display system for dispensable foods, including ice cream or frozen yogurt or the like forms one aspect for the invention. An advantage of this invention allows flavour indicators to be positioned directly adjacent to each container of ice cream and being easily replaceable and washable.

- 3 -DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0014] Shown in Figures 1 to 6 is an embodiment of an apparatus for displaying flavour information in respect of foods and preferably frozen foods such as ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like, dispensed from upright containers. It should be understood that while an aspect of this invention is designed for use with frozen foods, it may be utilized with other foods, whether frozen or not, dispensed from upright containers. It should be further understood that for purposes of this patent application, the term ice cream or frozen yogurt is intended to include any dispensable frozen products stored in upright containers, such as frozen yogurt, gelato, frozen soy products and others not explicitly described.
[0015] In the embodiment shown in the figures, dispensable food product 16, such as frozen yogurt or ice cream is contained and dispensable from upright containers 10, said containers each having an upper rim 12 defining an upper access opening 14 to said frozen foods 16 therein. In the embodiment shown, the container is an upright cylindrical and thus said upper access opening is cylindrical.
[0016] As can be seen in Figures 1 to 6, the apparatus 10 includes a cover insertable 18 over the outer edge 20 of the rim 12. The cover defines a central opening 24 which mates with upper access opening 14 of the container. It should be understood that while an aspect of this invention is designed for use with frozen foods, it may be utilized with other foods, whether frozen or not, dispensed from upright containers. It should be further understood that for purposes of this patent application, the term ice cream or frozen yogurt is intended to include any dispensable frozen products stored in upright containers, such as frozen yogurt, gelato, frozen soy products and others not explicitly described.
[0015] In the embodiment shown in the figures, dispensable food product 16, such as frozen yogurt or ice cream is contained and dispensable from upright containers 10, said containers each having an upper rim 12 defining an upper access opening 14 to said frozen foods 16 therein. In the embodiment shown, the container is an upright cylindrical and thus said upper access opening is cylindrical.
[0016] As can be seen in Figures 1 to 6, the apparatus 10 includes a cover insertable 18 over the outer edge 20 of the rim 12. The cover defines a central opening 24 which mates with upper access opening 14 of the container. The cover includes an upper flat horizontal surface 26 surrounding opening 24 and an upwardly extending bead 28 extending around an outer perimeter 30 of the horizontal surface 26. The cover also includes an upwardly extending inner flange or
- 4 -bead 25 extending around the central opening, which may rest upon or adjacent the rim 12 of the container.
[0017] A flat waterproof sheet, such as plastic sheet 32 including flavour indicia upon at least one side thereof matches the shape of the horizontal surface 26 and is positionable on the horizontal surface between the flange 25 (and rim 12) and perimetral bead 28, such that it rests flush against the horizontal surface. It should be understood that the sheet 32 may be formed of any waterproof material.
[0018] The flavour indicia on the plastic sheet (also referred to as a flavour plate) includes silk screened images of particular flavours of ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like and a brief description of the flavour.
The sheet is fixed in place by the rim and bead and may be easily removed from the horizontal surface simply by lifting it off.
[0019] In the embodiment shown, the sides 48 of the cover are equidistant, thereby forming a square. It should be understood that the cover may be any other shape as desired, such as circular, rectangular or the like as measured around its perimeter.
[0020] The embodiment of the cover 18 is releasable securable against the wall 22 of the container 10. The cover is so securable by means of a plurality of resilient members 34 mounted to the cover beneath the horizontal surface. The resilient members are positioned equidistantly around the wall 22 of the container, each of which engages the outside of the wall 22 in friction fit when said cover is inserted upon the container. The resilient members each include a pair of finger portions 40 which extend slightly inwardly of the inner

[0018] The flavour indicia on the plastic sheet (also referred to as a flavour plate) includes silk screened images of particular flavours of ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like and a brief description of the flavour.

The resilient members are positioned equidistantly around the wall 22 of the container, each of which engages the outside of the wall 22 in friction fit when said cover is inserted upon the container. The resilient members each include a pair of finger portions 40 which extend slightly inwardly of the inner
- 5 -bead 25 and spread to engage the wall 22 of the container in friction fit when the cover is positioned on the container and an attachment portion 42 which is insertable in a downwardly opening mating grove 44 in the cover. The opening of the cover 24 may be slightly smaller than the opening of the container, so as to allow the cover to rest upon the rim 12 of the container.
[0021] A plurality of containers with covers and plates attached thereto may be positioned in a display box, fridge or freezer, each said container including a different type or flavour of food. A number of different flavours of ice cream, frozen yogurt may be present therein, and each said flat plastic sheet indicate each said respective flavour, said plurality of containers may be aligned together by mating the sides 48 of the covers of adjacent containers together in a display freezer.
[0022] While the invention has been described according to what are presently considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiments, it must be understood that the invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments. Those ordinarily skilled in the art will understand that various modifications and equivalent structures and functions may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Therefore, the invention must be accorded the broadest possible interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and equivalent structures and functions. Furthermore, the invention should be understood to be limited by the claims appended hereto, purposively construed.
[0021] A plurality of containers with covers and plates attached thereto may be positioned in a display box, fridge or freezer, each said container including a different type or flavour of food. A number of different flavours of ice cream, frozen yogurt may be present therein, and each said flat plastic sheet indicate each said respective flavour, said plurality of containers may be aligned together by mating the sides 48 of the covers of adjacent containers together in a display freezer.

Those ordinarily skilled in the art will understand that various modifications and equivalent structures and functions may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Claims (12)
1. An apparatus for displaying flavour information in respect of frozen foods such as ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like contained and dispensable from upright containers, said containers each having an upper rim defining an upper access opening to said frozen foods therein, said apparatus comprising:
a cover insertable over the rim of said container and being releasable securable to the container, said cover defining a central opening mating with upper access opening of the container, the cover including an inner upwardly extending bead, positioned adjacent the central opening, an upper flat horizontal surface surrounding the inner bead and opening of the cover and an upwardly extending outer bead extending around an outer perimeter of the horizontal surface, the inner bead positioned upon or adjacent said rim when the cover is positioned on the container; and a flat plastic sheet including flavour indicia upon at least one side thereof, said sheet matching the shape of the horizontal surface, positionable between the inner and outer beads, such that it rests flush against the horizontal surface between the rim of the container and the bead of the horizontal surface.

2. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said container is an upright cylindrical and said upper access opening is cylindrical, said cover being rectangular in shape as measured around its perimeter.
3. An apparatus as recited in claim 2 wherein the sides of the cover are equidistant, thereby forming a square.
4. An apparatus as recited in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said flavour indicia includes silk screened images of particular ice cream, frozen yogurt or the like.

An apparatus as recited in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said cover includes a plurality of resilient members mounted thereto, positioned below said horizontal surface extending toward the outside of the wall of said container which engage the outside of the wall in friction fit when said cover is inserted upon the container.
6. An apparatus as recited in claim 5 wherein said resilient members are positioned equidistantly around the perimeter of the container.

An apparatus as recited in claims 4 or 5 wherein a plurality of said containers with said covers and plastic sheets attached thereto are positioned in a display freezer, each said container including a different flavour of ice cream, frozen yogurt therein, and each said plastic sheet indicating each said respective flavour, said plurality of containers being aligned together by mating the sides of the covers of adjacent container together.
8. An apparatus for displaying flavour information in respect of foods contained and dispensable from upright containers, said containers each having an upper rim defining an upper access opening to said foods therein, said apparatus comprising:
a cover insertable over the outer edge of the rim of said container and being releasable securable against the wall of the container, said cover defining a central opening mating with upper access opening of the container, the cover including an inner upwardly extending bead, extending around the central opening adjacent thereto, and an upper flat horizontal surface surrounding the inner bead and opening of the cover and an upwardly extending outer bead extending around an outer perimeter of the horizontal surface, the inner bead positioned upon or adjacent said rim when the cover is positioned on the container; and a flat waterproof sheet including flavour indicia upon at least one side thereof, said sheet matching the shape of the horizontal surface, positionable between the inner and outer beads such that it rests flush against the horizontal surface.

9. An apparatus as recited in claim 8 wherein said waterproof sheet is plastic and said container is an upright cylindrical and said upper access opening is cylindrical, said cover being rectangular in shape as measured around its perimeter.
10. An apparatus as recited in claim 8 wherein the sides of the cover are equidistant, thereby forming a square.
11. An apparatus as recited in any one of claims 8 to 10 wherein said flavour indicia includes silk screened images of particular food items stored in said container.
12. An apparatus as recited in claims 10 or 11 wherein a plurality of said containers with said covers and plates attached thereto are positioned in a display refrigerator, each said container including a different dispensable food item, and each said plastic sheet indicating each said respective food item, said plurality of containers being aligned together by mating the sides of the covers of adjacent container together.
