Abstract

The invention comprises a belt having a plied construction overlying tensile cords.
An elastomeric layer (10) overlies an overcord (11) which overlies yet another elastomeric layer (12) which in turn overlies a tensile cord (13). The overcord layer supports the tensile cords during molding thereby stabilizing a cordline centerline position with respect to a rib apex. This construction significantly reduces a distance from a tensile cord centerline to a rib apex and rib/pulley interface in a multi-ribbed belt, thereby significantly increasing belt life.

Claims (14)

1. A belt comprising:
an elastomeric body having a rib apex disposed in a longitudinal direction;
a tensile member disposed in a longitudinal direction and disposed within the elastomeric body relative to a rib apex, and having a radial distance d between a tensile member centerline and the rib apex;
a crosscord layer disposed adjacent the tensile member and opposite the rib apex with respect to the tensile member; and the cross-cord layer is substantially non-porous.
2. The belt as in claim 1 further comprising a fiber loading layer bonded with the elastomeric body at a pulley interface.
3. The belt as in claim 1, wherein the elastomeric body is solely made of rubber.
4. The belt as in claim 1 having a radial distance d up to approximately .050".
5. The belt as in claim 1 having a radial distance d in the range of approximately .020" to .015".
6. The belt as in claim 4, wherein the crosscord layer further comprises woven material.
7. The belt as in claim 4, wherein the crosscord layer further comprises non-woven material.
8. A belt comprising:

an elastomeric body having a rib apex disposed in a longitudinal direction;
a tensile member disposed in a longitudinal direction and disposed within the elastomeric body relative to a rib apex, and having a radial distance d between a tensile member centerline and the rib apex up to approximately +.050".
9. The belt as in claim 8 further comprising a multi-ribbed profile.
10. The belt as in claim 8 further comprising a crosscord layer disposed adjacent the tensile member and opposite the rib apex with respect to the tensile member.
11. A belt comprising:
an elastomeric body having at least two ribs running longitudinally and having a rib apex disposed in a longitudinal direction; and a tensile member disposed in a longitudinal direction and disposed within the ribs.
12. The belt as in claim 11 further comprising a radial distance d between a tensile member centerline and the rib apex in the range of approximately -.040" to +.020".
13. The belt as in claim 6, wherein the cross-cord layer is substantially non-porous.
14. The belt as in claim 10, wherein the cross-cord layer is substantially non-porous.
