Description
RIDING GARMENTS WITH MOBILE DEVICE HOLDER
Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to garments for equestrian riders and for riders motorcycles and other vehicles.
Background of the Invention It is common knowledge that we live in a technological society. A large percentage of the population carry cell phones, walkie talkies, personal digital assistants, personal music storage devices (IPOD TM) or other small mobile electronic devices with them almost all the time. It is a challenge to find a place on one's person to store the device in a manner which 1 o is conveniently accessible and which protects the device from accidental damage or loss.
When a person is engaged in an activity which takes him/her away from indoors, the importance of carrying phone or other communication device becomes more than a matter of comfort and convenience. Pleasure riders or trail riders value the ability to carry a phone in order to keep in touch and to enable them to seek help while out on a trail in case of emergency. Professionals employed in training, riding, exercising or racing horses need to carry walkie talkies or phones in order to avoid missed client calls and to keep in touch with other crew members while working.
Riding is a physically demanding activity, and the rider is likely to be jarred and jolted while engaged in a ride. If the rider merely clips a cell phone or other mobile device to his/her belt, the device may come loose and fall during rigorous activity. It is likely that the physical shock of the fall would damage the device. The rider may not even notice that the device has come loose, and the device could be lost on a trail, roadway or track.
It is a fairly common occurrence for a rider to fall or be thrown during a ride. A mobile device would likely be destroyed in the course of a rider's fall. More importantly, the rider risks serious injury to intemal organs if he/she falls in such a way that the torso hits a small hard object, such as a phone or walkie talkie or other mobile device tucked onto the rider's belt, or carried in a pants or shirt pocket.
It is an object of the present invention to provide riding garments having a storage 1o compartment to securely store a mobile device.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide riding garments which protect mobile devices from physical shock or damage.
It is yet a further object of the present invention to provide riding garments which have compartments for mobile devices positioned in a manner which decreases the likelihood that a rider will be injured due to landing on the mobile device in the event of a fall.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device positioned thereon at a location to overlay a wearer's limb.
In a first embodiment the riding garment is a pair of chaps. In a second embodiment the riding garment is a pair of half chaps. In a third embodiment the riding garment is a pair of boots. In each of the foregoing embodiments, the holder for a mobile device is positioned at a location to overlay the outside wearer's leg at a position between the knee and ankle.
In a fourth embodiment the riding garment is a jacket. The holder for a mobile device is positioned at a location to overlay the outside wearer's upper arm.
Other advantages, features and characteristics of the present invention, as well as methods of operation and functions of the related elements of the structure, and the combination of parts and economies of manufacture, will become more apparent upon consideration of the 1o following detailed description and the appended claims with reference to the accompanying drawings, the latter of which is briefly described hereinbelow.

Brief Description of the Drawinas Figure 1 is a perspective view of first embodiment of a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of second embodiment of a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of third embodiment of a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device of the present invention.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of fourth embodiment of a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device of the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment Referring now to Figure 1-4 of the drawings, a riding garment having a holder for a mobile device (not shown) is designated by general reference numeral 10 in each of the embodiments of the present invention. Like structures will be labeled in each of Figures 1-4 with like reference numerals. Features which are common to all of the four embodiments will be discussed with reference to Figure 1 but are intended to apply analogously to each of the embodiments.
Figures 1,2 and 3 present the features of the embodiments of the invention which are most closely analogous to one another, in that they provide covering for at least the lower leg of a wearer. In the first embodiment shown in Figure 1, the riding garment 10 is a pair of chaps 12. The chaps 12 are typically constructed from leather or suede and are designed to extend from a wearers waist to the top of the wearer's boots (not shown). In the second embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 2, the riding garment 10 is a pair of half chaps, only one of which is shown, and designated by reference numeral 20. Each of the half chaps are typically constructed from leather or suede and are designed to extend from just below the wearer's knee to the top of the wearer's boots (not shown). In the third embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 3, the riding garment 10 is a pair of riding boots, only one of 20 which is shown, and designated by reference numeral 30.
With reference now to Figure 1, 2, and 3, a holder for a mobile device 13 is positioned on the chaps 12 at a location to overlay a wearer's limb. More specifically, the holder 13 overlays the outside of a wearer's leg at a position between the knee and ankle. The selection of a position overlaying a wearer's leg between the knee and ankle has several advantages. The holder for a mobile device 13 at a location between the knee and ankle is easy to for a wearer to reach when the rider is mounted on a horse or other ridden animal, or is mounted on a motorcycle or other ridden vehicle. The wearer need only reach down a short way to retrieve the mobile device. This location does not come into close contact with or interfere with other equipment such as spurs which might be located on boots, or with stirrups or other equipment located on the wearer's mount or vehicle. Most importantly, the holder for a 1o mobile device 13 is mounted at a position away from the wearer's torso. If the wearer were to fall from his/her mount or vehicle and land on a small hard object, such as a cell phone or walkie talkie internal injury might result if the hard object contacted the wearer's torso. By positioning the holder for a mobile device 13 to overlay the wearer's limb, well away from the torso, there is much less risk of injury in the event of a fall.
Figure 4 shows a fourth embodiment of the present invention wherein the riding garment 40 is a jacket. Again in this embodiment, the holder for a mobile device 13 to overlay the wearer's limb, rather than the torso in order to minimize risk of injury in the event of a fall.
The holder for a mobile device 13 is positioned to overlay the outside of the wearer's upper arm. With the holder 13 in this location, the mobile device would be kept in a safe, easily 2o accessible location, which would not interfere with other equipment.
The holder for a mobile device 13 should be of a size to readily accommodate a cell phone, walkie talkie, personal digital assistant, personal music storage device (IPOD
TM) or other small mobile device. The holder 13 comprises a pocket 14 extending vertically and defining opening 16 at the top thereof to receive the mobile device (not shown). The holder for a mobile device 13 further comprises a flap covering 17 to cover the opening 16.
The flap covering is shown in an open position in Figure 1, but is shown closed in Figures 2 and 3. A
fastening means 18 is provided to removably secure the flap into a closed position over the opening 16 of the pocket 14. The fastening means 18 is depicted as a pair of mating parts of a snap fastener in Figure 1, but any suitable fastening means could be employed in the present invention. Suitable fastening means could include a button and buttonhole, snap fasteners, a zipper, hook and loop fastening material, hook and eye, etc.
If the riding garment 12, 20, or 30, 40 is constructed from multiple layers, the pocket could be formed integrally between an inner and an outer layer of the riding garment. It is preferred to form the pocket as a patch 15 attached to the outer surface 19 of the riding garment 12, 20, 30. The attachment of the patch 15 could be accomplished by any suitably secure attachment means. The preferred attachment means would be by gluing and/or stitching the patch to the riding garment 12, 20, 30, 40. The holder for a mobile device 13 should be waterproof and should protect the device from physical shock in the event of the rider's fall. Accordingly, the holder for a mobile device 13 is preferably constructed from leather or suede. The holder for a mobile device 13 may also be constructed from other waterproof materials such as nylon or PVC, but if such materials are used, it is advisable to include a layer of padding in the construction of the pocket to provide protection from physical shock.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that modifications of the riding garment having a holder for a mobile device of the present invention may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the present invention. For example, a further variation of the holder for a mobile device could be made detachable from the riding garment. The positioning of the holder for a mobile device could be varied to overlay differing portions of the wearer's limbs. Multiple holders for mobile or other devices could be constructed on a single riding garment. Thus, changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of the various parts and elements, described herein without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention. It will be apparent that the scope of the present invention is limited only by the claims set out hereinbelow.
