Abstract

People confined to hospital beds for extended periods of time have limited possibilities for routine activities such as exercising, using a computer, writing, and reading.

In several stages of their recovery period, many people are able and even need to exercise both their body and their minds, but have no tools or assistance from others for such activities.

In most hospitals, there are two beds per room, so there is no privacy for each patient. As well, the activities of one person might disturb the other lying in the same room. Even in a one bed room, a patient has no means to exercise the muscles that are not affected by their ailment. They have no facilities to easily access computer, to write, to draw, etc.

Therefore, the physical and mental states of the patient are deeply affected by inactivity. This, in turn, leads to a slower recovery of physical and mental capabilities during and after hospitalization.

This invention enables a patient to have:

- A high degree of privacy, even if there are more beds in the same room.

- A variety of possibilities for intense physical and mental activity.

- A nice and comfortable ambiance where the air conditioning can be adjusted, as desired.

All these factors will shorten the recovery period and make reintegration into normal life easier. This invention therefore saves money for hospitals and society at large.

The invention consists of a three dimensional frame forming an enclosure similar to a small room inside a regular room, offering possibilities for exercise, utilization of a computer, writing, drawing, watching TV, and using other means of education/entertainment.
Advantages 1. This enclosure may be sound-proof.

2. In a one bed room, the invention allows for an additional bed to possibly be added without discomfort to either patient.

3. The structure can be easily assembled and dismantled.

4. Rooms of this kind can be erected in emergencies, in the big halls of hospitals, or even on the premises of a yard.
5. In emergency situations, similar units may be erected to serve as operation rooms or to serve as cordoned off units, in the case of contagious diseases, such as SARS.

Description

MULTITASK HOSPITAL BED FRAME

The invention is a product that has many applications in the field of physiotherapy, both for short and long term, in hospitals or rehabilitation institutions, or even for residential units.

This product is a 3-dimensional frame, forming an enclosure equipped with the tools and installations necessary in ensuring a comfortable ambiance for the user, without leaving the bed.

Inside this enclosure, the user has all the amenities for a variety of daily activities:

- A variety of exercise movements in all three directions, activating all the muscle groups. Adjustments for the magnitude of the desired muscular effort may be easily achieved.

- Use of a computer, TV set, or other electronic devices.

- Writing on a mobile table that can be adjusted to fit the most comfortable position above the body of the user while in bed.

The enclosure ensures the privacy of the patient, a pleasant temperature, and can be sound proof.

The prior art in the field of hospital beds includes beds that neither offer nor make possible amenities for physiotherapy or 3 ~

promotion of mental health. Due to the deficiency of the current art, patients requiring exercise need the assistance of staff in order to get an efficient workout. Furthermore, the privacy, sound- proofing, and odor-proofing are not ensured with the existing products. Also, the air conditioning cannot be adjusted for each hospital room.

In general, the invention is a 3-dimensional enclosure made of easy to install steel frames that can support/accommodate all the necessary equipment.

In this disclosure, the term 'mechanism' refers to the device where an external force of an individual's muscle is applied on a lever in order to perform various exercises. The movement of the lever is opposed by the internal force of the device, provided either by friction, tension or compression of a spring, or of another device.

For other activities:

a. A mobile table can easily be brought out in front of the user at an optimal position, and then it can be slid away on the side of the bed, leaving room for other activities. The user can write, draw, read, eat, or do other activities on this adjustable table.

b. A computer plus all of its accessories (printer, monitor, etc.) will be placed on the table or on a console that slides in front of the user.

c. A television set, DVD player, or other electronic devices can be placed on another mobile console that can easily move in front of the user by remote control.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

Regarding the physiotherapeutic aspect of the invention, a small 'mechanism' can be installed onto various parts of the frame in order to ensure an optimal amount of possibilities for exercising the desired muscles at the needed magnitude of the muscular force.

The muscles used during the activity will be developed by forcing the lever to move against the opposing internal force.
The magnitude of the internal opposing force can be easily adjusted by a knob to fit the needs of the user: disabled or non-disable, weak or strong, young or old.

When a person applies a force or pulls/pushes on lever 38, the force will cause a rotation of the threaded rod 34 that in turn will rotate nut 32 and washer 30, which are interlocked.

Since washer 26 can not rotate, it will oppose the free rotation of washer 28. Therefore, the muscles that push or pull lever 38 will have to work against the force of friction mentioned above. The mechanism can be installed in many positions and therefore virtually all of the body's muscles can be activated and developed.

The size of all the parts of the mechanism can vary according to the conditions in which it will be operated, such as: the force applied to the lever or the location of the mechanism.
Before operating the mechanism, nut 32 must be tightened 10 ~

against spring washer 30, which in turn will press washer 28.
Washer 28 cannot turn because it is interlocked to part 26 by the help of a pin 27 protruding in a hole in part 26. By tightening nut 34, a force of friction will be generated at the contact surface between washers 28 and 26. The magnitude of this frictional force may be adjusted by tightening nut 34.

The four holes of part 42, located in the corners of part 20, serve to install the mechanism on a flat surface.

If the mechanism is to be installed on a steel pipe (or other kind of profile that is not necessarily round, but rectangular or square-shaped), then additional parts (44 and 46) will be used.

Part 44 will be attached to part 20 with four bolts passing through holes 50 and 42. Part 46 will tighten part 46 and 52 so that the mechanism will be stable.

Part 38 may be a telescopic steel pipe consisting of at least 2 pipes, one of which can slide inside the exterior pipe. This allows for the adjustment of the total length of the lever, and, hence, the magnitude of the muscular effort can be selected according to the necessities of each person.
