Abstract

An apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper of a vehicle includes a body having a circumferential wall defining a bumper receiving cavity. The body has means for releasably securing the bumper within the bumper receiving cavity. An accessory support is attached to the body for supporting an accessory.

Description

TITLE
An apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper FIELD
The present application relates to an apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper, more specifically on the bumper of a recreational vehicle.

BACKGROUND
Bumpers have been used to support objects, such as in US patent no. 5,620,125 (Duncan et al.) and 4,798,409 (Miller).

SUMMARY
There is provided an apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper of a vehicle, including a body having a circumferential wall defining a bumper receiving cavity. The body has means for releasably securing the bumper within the bumper receiving cavity. An accessory support is attached to the body for supporting an accessory.

Other features will be apparent from the description and the claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended to be in any way limiting, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side perspective view of an apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper.
FIG. 2 is a front perspective view of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a front perspective view of a variation of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a front perspective view of the apparatus of FIG. 1 supporting a satellite dish.
FIG. 5 is a rear view of a recreational vehicle with the apparatus of FIG. 1 supporting a clothesline.
FIG. 6 is a rear view of a recreational vehicle with the apparatus of FIG. 1 supporting a tarp.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
An apparatus for supporting an accessory on a bumper generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIG.1 through 6.

Structure and Relationship of Parts:
Referring to FIG. 1, apparatus 10 includes a body 12 with a circumferential wall 14 defining a bumper receiving cavity 16. Referring to FIG. 2, cavity 16 has a square cross-section that is slightly larger than the dimension of the bumper 18 of a recreational vehicle 20, such that bumper 18 may be received within cavity 16, as shown in FIG. 5. It will be understood that if apparatus 10 is used for other shapes of bumpers or for different vehicles, cavity 16 would have a corresponding cross-section. Referring again to FIG. 2, body 12 also has bolts 22 for releasably securing bumper 18 within cavity 16. Bolts 22 are preferably wing-bolts, or have a handle of some sort, such that they may be tightened and released by hand. Other more elaborate means of securing bumper 18 within cavity 16 may also be used, such as a grip within cavity 16 that sets once installed that can be released on the outside of body 12, however, adequate results have been achieved using bolts 22. Bumper receiving cavity 16 may have two opposed open ends 24, such that the position of body 12 is not impeded by bumper 18 when installed, or, referring to FIG. 3, it may have one open end 24 for receiving bumper 18, and another closed end 26 opposite open end 24 that abuts bumper 18 when installed. Bolts 22 may be positioned at both ends 24 and 26 or only at one end 24 or 26.
Referring to FIG. 4, an accessory support 30 is attached to body 12 that is used to support an accessory 32. Accessory support 30 may be attached to body 12 by welding, by bolt or screw, or other suitable means. Accessory support 30 is shown as having a circumferential cylindrical wall 34 that defines an accessory receiving cavity 36. Wall 34 preferably has a cylindrical shape to accommodate support poles 38, such as for a satellite dish 40 as shown in FIG. 4, clothesline 42 as shown in FIG. 5, tarp 44 as shown in FIG. 6, or other suitable accessories 32. Referring to FIG. 5, in the case of clothesline 42 or tarp 44, two apparatuses 10 may be provided to support each end of clothesline 42.
Referring to FIG.
6, two apparatuses 10 may also be required in other situations, such as to support one end of tarp 44 as a shelter. Wall 34 may have a different cross-section or shape if preferred. For example, wall 34 may taper down at the bottom or top. Wall 34 has bolts 46 extending into cavity 36 for releasably securing accessory 32 within accessory receiving cavity 36.

Operation:
The use of apparatus 10 as described above with reference to FIG. I through 6 will now be described. Referring to FIG. 5, bumper 18 is inserted into cavity 16 of body 12.
Cavity 16 may have either both ends 24 open as shown in FIG. 2, or one end 24 open and the other end 26 closed, as shown in FIG. 3, which may affect the possible installation positions.
Once body 12 is correctly positioned on bumper 18, bolts 22 that extend into cavity 16 are tightened to releasably secure bumper 18 within cavity 16. Depending on the intended use, another apparatus 10 may be similarly installed on the other end of bumper 18.
Referring to FIG. 4, accessory 32 is then inserted into accessory support 30, and bolts 46 on accessory support 30 are tightened to secure accessory 32 in place, such as satellite dish 40 as shown in FIG. 4, clothesline 42 as shown in FIG. 5, or tarp 44 as shown in FIG. 6.

In this patent document, the word "comprising" is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article "a" does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be one and only one of the elements.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope defined in the Claims.
