Abstract

A tubing coupling method comprises the steps:
providing a length of expandable tubing (72) and a length of larger diameter non-expanding tubing (74); connecting an end portion of the expandable tubing (72) to an end portion of the non-expanding tubing (74) with a portion of expandable tubing (76); running the tubing (72, 74, 76) into a bore; and expanding the expandable tubing (72, 76).
The expandable tubing (72) may form part of an expandable well or sand screen, or may be expandable bore liner (12).

Claims (34)

1. A method for placing an expandable tubular in a wellbore, the method comprising:
lowering an expandable tubular assembly into the wellbore in a single trip, the expandable tubular assembly having a first portion with a first outer diameter and a second portion with a second outer diameter, the first outer diameter being greater than the second outer diameter;
affixing the first portion to a location in the wellbore; and expanding the second portion, thereby permanently placing the expandable tubular assembly into the wellbore.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the location in the wellbore is predetermined.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the predetermined location comprises an existing wellbore feature.
4. The method of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the expandable tubular assembly further comprises a running tool assembly.
5. The method of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the expandable tubular assembly further comprises an expander tool.
6. The method of claim 5, wherein expanding the second portion comprises traversing the expander tool through the second portion.
7. The method of claim 6, wherein the expander tool is traversed through by pushing.
8. The method of claim 6, wherein the expander tool is traversed through by pulling.
9. The method of claim 5, further comprising a force application member connected to the expander tool.
10. The method of claim 9, wherein expanding the second portion comprises transversing the expander tool through the second portion by applying a force to the force application member.
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the expander tool is traversed through by pushing.
12. The method of claim 10, wherein the expander tool is traversed through by pulling.
13. A method for placing an expandable tubular in a wellbore, comprising:
lowering an expandable tubular assembly into the wellbore in a single trip, the expandable tubular assembly having a running tool assembly, an expander tool, a first portion with a first outer diameter, and a second portion with a second outer diameter, the first outer diameter being greater than the second outer diameter;
affixing the first portion to a location in the wellbore; and expanding the second portion, wherein expanding the second portion comprises traversing the expander tool through the second portion by pushing.
14. A method for placing an expandable tubular in a wellbore, comprising:
lowering an expandable tubular assembly into the wellbore in a single trip, the expandable tubular assembly having a running tool assembly, an expander tool with a force application member connected thereto, a first portion with a first outer diameter, and a second portion with a second outer diameter, the first outer diameter being greater than the second outer diameter;
affixing the first portion to a location in the wellbore; and expanding the second portion, wherein expanding the second portion comprises traversing the expander tool through the second portion by applying a force to the force application member such that the expander tool is traversed through by pushing.
15 15. A method of placing a tubular member in a wellbore, comprising:
lowering the tubular member into the wellbore, the tubular member having a first portion with a first outer diameter and a second portion with a second outer diameter, wherein the first outer diameter is greater than the second outer diameter and the first and second portions are connected together prior to the lowering:
hanging the first portion to affix the tubular member to a location in the wellbore;
expanding the second portion with an expander tool after affixing the tubular member;
and releasing the tubular member from a running tool after hanging the first portion and prior to expanding the second portion.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein the lowering, hanging and expanding all occur in a single trip.
17. The method of claim 15, wherein the expander tool is at least partially disposed in the first portion during lowering of the tubular member.
18. The method of claim 15, wherein releasing the tubular member includes retracting keys of the running tool.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein retracting the keys includes applying fluid pressure to the running tool.
20. The method of claim 15, wherein the first portion has an inner diameter at least as large as a largest outer diameter of the expander tool such that the first portion is not expanded.
21. The method of claim 15, wherein the expander tool is a cone.
22. A method of placing a pipe in a wellbore, comprising:
lowering the pipe into the wellbore, the pipe having a first portion with a first outer diameter and a second portion with a second outer diameter, wherein the first outer diameter is greater than the second outer diameter and the first and second portions are connected together prior to the lowering;
affixing the first portion to a location in the wellbore; and expanding the second portion by traversing an expander tool through the second portion, wherein the first portion has an inner diameter at least as large as a largest outer diameter of the expander tool such that the first portion is not expanded.
23. The method of claim 22, wherein affixing the first portion includes actuating a hanger.
24. The method of claim 22, wherein affixing the first portion includes actuating a packer.
25. The method of claim 22, wherein affixing the first portion includes engaging cooperating threads of an existing pipe in the wellbore.
26. The method of claim 22, further comprising releasing the pipe from a running tool after affixing the first portion and prior to expanding the second portion.
27. The method of claim 26, wherein releasing the pipe includes retracting keys of the running tool.
28. The method of claim 27, wherein retracting the keys includes applying fluid pressure to the running tool.
29. The method of claim 15, wherein the second portion of the tubular member has a permanent fluid path between an interior and an exterior of the second portion.
30. A method of placing a tubular member in a wellbore, comprising:
lowering the tubular member into the wellbore, the tubular member having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first and second portions are together prior to the lowering and each have different inner diameters;
hanging the tubular member to affix the tubular member to a location in the wellbore;

expanding the second portion with an expander tool after affixing the tubular member;
and releasing the tubular member from a running tool after hanging the tubular member and prior to expanding the second portion.
31. The method of claim 30, wherein releasing the tubular member includes retracting keys of the running tool.
32. The method of claim 31, wherein retracting the keys includes applying fluid pressure to the running tool.
33. The method of claim 30, wherein the first portion has an inner diameter at least as large as a largest outer diameter of the expander tool such that the first portion is not expanded.
34. The method of claim 30, wherein expanding the second portion comprises traversing the expander tool through the second portion by pushing.
