Description

C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\LOCa1 Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-05 Patent Application FILED.doc Claim of Priority 6 The present application is based on and a claim to priority is 7 made under 35 U.S.C. Section 119(e) to provisional patent 8 application currently pending in the U.S. Patent and Trademark 9 Office having Serial No. 60/657,791 and a filing date of March 2, 2005.

12 Field of the Invention 13 The present invention relates generally to a system and method 14 for implementing a physical fitness regimen with color healing to positively affect a person's health and well being. More 16 particularly, the invention relates to a system and method wherein 17 a person performs a physical fitness activity in a fitness area in 18 which a color environment is produced, such that the person 19 achieves chakra cleansing and heightened awareness which positively affects the physical and emotional body of the person. In at least 21 one embodiment of the invention, an aural environment is produced 22 in the fitness area via music, verbal affirmations, and/or other 23 forms of audible stimuli while a person is performing a physical 24 fitness activity therein.

C:\Documents and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc r 2 It has been long recognized that physical exercise --3 particularly, cardiovascular exercise -- is beneficial to both the 4 physical health and mental wellbeing of individuals.
Similarly, it has been well established that environmental variables, including 6 visible and audible stimuli such as color, music/sound, and 7 lighting, can have a significant effect on a person's mental state.
8 With regard to color, it is well understood that color and 9 combinations of color embody energy "personality" that correspond to specific frequencies in the physical being. These frequencies 11 are commonly referred to as "chakras."
12 Various systems, methods, techniques and the like, have been 13 disclosed in the prior art that incorporate combinations of human 14 physical motion, music, light and/or color. For example, pending U.S. Patent Publication No. 2004/0181268 discloses a light therapy 16 system that exposes specific chakra points on a patient's body with 17 specific light frequencies in an effort to allow the body to 18 generally rejuvenate itself. U.S. Patent No. 5,352,181 discloses a 19 method and recording for use in achieving alpha and theta brain wave states, and effecting positive emotional states in humans to 21 enhance learning and self-improvement. U.S. Patent No. 6,498,955 22 discloses a group preference arbitration system that allows the 23 members of a group environment to influence, but not directly 24 control, the selection of various environmental factors, including, for example, lighting and music, at a given time. U.S. Patent Nos.

C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 6,641,523, 5,403,263, and 5,676,633, disclose various methods and 2 associated apparatus incorporating audio and/or video means for 3 reducing patient stress during the preoperative, intra-operative 4 and postoperative phases of surgery.
However, there is no current fitness regimen wherein a person 6 performs a physical fitness activity such as, for example, indoor 7 cycling, yoga, pilates, and/or meditation, in a controlled 8 environment of variable color or monochromatic light, and/or sound, 9 such as, music, thereby providing a variety of pitch and tonal qualities, and/or verbal affirmations, so as to achieve a 11 heightened state of awareness with respect to the mind and body as 12 it relates to the chakras and benefits of color healing.
13 Thus, it would be beneficial to provide a system and method 14 for implementing a physical fitness regimen with color healing to positively affect the health and wellness of a person. More in 16 particular, it would be helpful to provide a physical fitness 17 regimen having at least one color environment produced in a fitness 18 area in which one or more physical fitness activities are I9 performed, wherein the fitness activity and the color environment are selected to correspond to one of the chakras, such that a 21 person's chakra receives the synergistic benefits of the physical 22 fitness activity with color healing. It would also be advantageous 23 to provide a physical fitness regimen with color healing further 24 providing an aural environment such as, by way of example only, musical accompaniment, verbal affirmations, or both, wherein the C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\Loca1 Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1411-OS Patent Application FILED,doc 1 aural environment is selected to correspond to a chakra being 2 affected by the physical fitness activity and the color 3 environment, thereby providing the benefits of further synergy 4 between the physical fitness activity, the color environment, and the aural environment to affect one or more chakras of the person.

8 The present invention is generally directed to a system and 9 method for implementing a physical fitness regimen with color healing. More in particular, the system and method of the present 11 invention provides for the selection, use, and control of a color 12 environment in a fitness area via variable color or monochromatic 13 light and at least one physical fitness activity such as, by way of 14 example only, indoor cycling, yoga, pilates, or meditation, which may be performed by a single person or in a group environment, to 16 assist a person or persons in achieving a heightened state of 17 awareness with respect to the mind and body as it relates to the 18 chakra cleansing, realigning, and sizing, to clear and heal each 19 chakra. In at least one embodiment, the present system and method further include the selection, use, and control of an aural 21 environment via music having a variety of pitch and tonal 22 qualities, and/or verbal affirmations which correspond to the 23 chakra being affected.
24 In one embodiment of the invention, a method for implementing a physical fitness regimen incorporating color healing is provided C:\Documents and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 wherein a person or a group of persons are engaged by a fitness 2 instructor and perform a physical fitness activity in a fitness 3 area. Concurrently, color is introduced into the fitness area to 4 produce a color environment in such a manner that the combination of the physical fitness activity and the color environment mentally 6 stimulates the persons) and positively affects at least one 7 chakra. The combination of the physical fitness activity and color 8 healing are selected such that they address and affect one or more 9 chakra of the person, as desired.
In another embodiment of the present invention, audible 11 stimulation is selected and introduced into the method to 12 complement the effects of the physical fitness activity and color 13 healing.
14 In a further embodiment of the present invention, the method incorporates the step of leading a person or persons through one or 16 more verbal affirmation(s).
17 In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the method 18 is repeatable to allow effective and efficient chakra cleansing and 19 balancing for aiding persons in dealing with both physical and emotional issues through an innovative format, unlike simple 21 passive meditations, and to enable persons to achieve a state of 22 upper consciousness so that intuitions may be felt.
23 In still another embodiment of the present invention, the 24 method comprises an organized format such that the method can be efficiently taught to and subsequently implemented by a wide C:\Documents and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 variety of fitness instructor trainees.
2 The present invention further encompasses a system which 3 permits the foregoing methodology to be implemented by one or more 4 persons, the system comprising a fitness area, a color environment produced by a color generator, and, in at least one embodiment, an 6 aural environment produced by an audio generator.
7 These and other objects, features and advantages of the 8 present invention will become more clear when the drawings as well 9 as the detailed description are taken into consideration.

24 The present invention is generally directed to a system and method for implementing a physical fitness regimen with color C:\Documents and Settings\mro\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-05 Patent Application FILED.doc 1 healing in order to positively affect not just the physical fitness 2 of the persons, but their mental health and overall wellbeing, or 3 wellness. Wellness encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, 4 spiritual, and social wellbeing of a person, and the present invention is directed towards a system and method to improve a 6 person's wellness. The method is particularly well suited for a 7 group fitness format, however, in at least one embodiment, the 8 method may be performed by a single person. In a preferred 9 embodiment of the invention, the method for implementing the physical fitness regimen comprises selecting at least one physical 11 fitness activity to be preformed by one or more persons in a 12 fitness area, wherein a color environment is selected and produced 13 in the fitness area to provide the further benefit of color 14 healing. In further embodiments of the invention, the method may comprise one or more additional environmental stimuli including, 16 but not limited to, an aural environment such as may be produced 17 via music and/or verbal affirmations, of course, it is within the 18 scope and intent of the system and method of the present invention 19 to include one or more additional environmental stimuli.
More in particular, the present invention comprises a system 21 and method for implementing a physical fitness regimen which 22 including at least one physical fitness activity with color healing 23 to affect chakra cleansing and balance, and to improve wellness in 24 persons who utilize the invention. Each chakra has a corresponding color, and is associated with a particular location or part of the C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1411-OS Patent Application FZLED.doc 1 human body, and to a particular element, as provided below in Table 2 1, which also includes the Sanskrit name for each of the seven (7) 3 chakras.

Table 1: Chakra Identification 7 Chakra Sanskrit Name Color Location Element 8 One Muladhara Red Root Earth 9 Two Svadisthana Orange Sacral Water Three Maipura Yellow Solar Plexus Fire 11 Four Anahatha Green Heart Air 12 Five Vishuddha Blue Throat Sound 13 Six Ajna Indigo Brow Light 14 Seven Sahasrara Violet Crown Thought 16 It has been observed that the body absorbs color energy 17 through the all organs, vibration each color gives off. Further, 18 body systems, and functions are connected to the main energy 19 centers or ch akras. Every person has seven chakras and each of these energy centers is governed by one of the seven color 21 energies. Each chakra resonates with a particular color vibration 22 and reflects a different rainbow color when balan ced. Color 23 healing helps to balance the chakras by introducing more color, via 24 light energy, to the physical, mental and ethereal dies.
bo Individuals known as have a "subtle an physical" body, also C:\DOCUments and Settings\mrc\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1411-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 astral body, which surrounds the physical body is roughly the and 2 same size and shape. This is a body of energy thatsome people are 3 able to perceive as an aura surrounding the physical body. The 4 subtle physical body consists of chakras, energy fibers and astral tubes that are similar to arteries. The part of the subtle 6 physical body that concerns the practitioner of yoga and Buddhism 7 is the "shushumna." The shushumna is a tube, more particularly, an 8 astral tube, that runs from the base of the spine to a center point 9 between, and slightly above, the eyebrows. There are six (6) chakras, or energy vortexes, that lie along the tube.
11 The seven (7) chakras are not physically identifiable portions 12 of the body, however, they can be located by providing a physical 13 location, and then feeling the energy in that approximate region.
14 Following are the approximate physical locations of the seven (7) chakras, as illustrated in Figure 1: root chakra -- base of the 16 spine; sacral chakra -- spleen or sex organs: solar plexus chakra -17 approximately one inch below the navel; heart chakra -- center of 18 the chest; throat chakra -- base of the throat; brow chakra --19 between eyebrows and about an inch above; and, crown chakra -approximately several inches above the top of the head.
21 The first six (6) chakras are connected by the shushumna, as 22 noted above. The seventh chakra, the crown chakra, is not 23 connected to the other six. The kundalini is at the base of the 24 spine, "resting" in the first, or "root" chakra. Really, it is probably almost asleep, because most people never access their C:\Documents and Settings\mro\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1411-OS Patent Application FILEb.doc 1 kundalini, unless confronted with extremely intense physical or 2 emotional circumstances.
3 One benefit of chakra cleansing is that it enables meditation 4 on personal issues. An instructor, through verbal phrases or affirmations, can guide persons to focus on each region of their 6 body, and on particular issues that a person desires to address.
7 The color of light is selected to correspond to a specific portion 8 of the body and to affect a specific chakra in accordance with 9 Table 1 and Figure 1. The present invention provides for a chakra cleansing workout which incorporates in an alternating manner each 11 of the full spectra of colors listed in Table 1. It is to be noted I2 however, that in at least one embodiment of the present invention, 13 violet light is selected to affect the brow chakra and in this 14 embodiment, white light is utilized to affect the crown chakra.
The foregoing selection is based upon current limitations in 16 effectively producing a color environment utilizing indigo 17 lighting, however, it is within the scope and intent of the system 18 and method of the present invention to comprise a color environment 19 utilizing indigo lighting, as improvements in lighting technology permit effective and efficient production of such a color 21 environment. As noted above, an aural environment comprising music 22 and/or verbal affirmations may also be selected to affect and 23 stimulate the portion of the body corresponding to the frequency of 24 the color light selected and the chakra affected thereby.
The following are a few examples of preferred embodiments for C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1411-O5 Patent Application FLLED.doc 1 implementing a physical fitness regimen with color healing in 2 accordance with the present invention:
3 (a) Chakra clearing for the entire body. This embodiment 4 encompasses the selection of a plurality of color environments wherein each color is selected to affect one of the seven (7) 6 chakras, and producing a different one of each color environment in 7 a fitness area in an alternating and preferably sequential manner 8 during each of a corresponding plurality of predetermined activity 9 periods. This embodiment may also include selecting a plurality of aural environments which correspond to the chakras to be affected 11 and producing each aural environment in synchronization with a 12 corresponding color environment during a corresponding 13 predetermined activity period. In the present invention, the aural 14 environments can encompass a wide variety of musical rhythms and tempos, verbal affirmations, and/or other audible stimuli.
16 Further, in this embodiment, a different one of a plurality of 17 physical fitness activities are selected to be performed by the 18 person during each predetermined activity period, wherein the 19 physical fitness activity is selected to correspond to a specific chakra to be affected.
21 (b) Physical chakra clearing. This embodiment is similar to 22 chakra clearing for the entire body with the exception that it is 23 limited in scope to the lower three (3) chakras, namely the root 24 chakra, the sacral chakra, and the solar plexus chakra, and as such, the color environments selected comprise red, orange, and C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3b\1411-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 yellow, respectively.
2 (c) Spiritual chakra clearing. This embodiment is similar to 3 physical chakra clearing with the exception that it is limited in 4 scope to the upper four (4) chakras, namely the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the brow chakra, and the crown chakra, and 6 correspondingly, the color environments selected comprise green, 7 blue, violet, and white, respectively.
8 (d) Individual chakra clearing. This embodiment is structure 9 to affect a single one (1) of the seven (7) individual chakras, and the color environment is selected to correspond to the specific 11 chakra to be affected.
12 To fully appreciate the invention, a further discussion of the 13 term "chakra," as well as the intimate relationship between 14 chakras, the frequency of light, and in particular, colored light, as well as the affects of physical and audible stimuli on the 16 chakras is warranted. The word chakra, which translates to "wheel"
17 in Sanskrit, defines spinning energy centers that receive, 18 transform and expand energy in the body, mind and spirit. Each of 19 the seven (7) major chakras governs a different physical area of the body, specific organs and glands, as well as mental, emotional 21 and spiritual qualities. Accordingly, the chakras truly are a map 22 to understanding and transforming the quality of life. When the 23 chakras are clear, unblocked and balanced, persons gain immediate 24 access to their higher selves, experiencing vibrancy, joy and clarity, and radiating pure light energy. When the chakras are C:\Documents and Settings\mro\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 blocked, the color energy is muddy and persons experience many 2 symptoms, including, for example, lethargy, depression, confusion, 3 anger, poor digestion, labored breathing, and headaches.
4 Color healing is a holistic practice concerned with nourishing and balancing vital life energy, and it is complementary to all 6 other holistic practices, such as homeopathy, yoga, massage 7 therapy, reflexology, chiropractic, acupuncture, Reiki, 8 naturopathy, and the like. Color healing is the fastest growing 9 spa treatment in the United States. Ancient Sanskrit writings describe the body as having a series of seven (7) major energy 11 centers known as chakras, as above. Each chakra, it is believed, 12 is responsive to a different color. In addition, each chakra is 13 located at the site of the major endocrine gland and corresponds to 14 particular states of consciousness, personality types, and endocrine secretions. More in particular, the root chakra is 16 associated with the gonads or the ovaries: the sacral chakra is 17 associated with the adrenals; the solar plexus chakra is associated 18 with the pancreas; the heart chakra is associated with the thymus;
19 the throat chakra is associated with the thyroid; the brow chakra is associated with the pineal; and, the crown chakra is associated 21 with the pituitary.
22 Science is now confirming that different colors interact with 23 the endocrine system of the body to stimulate or inhibit hormonal 24 production. Hormones directly affect a person's physical, 2S emotional, and mental states. In fact, color travels through the C:\Documents and Settings\mro\LOCa1 Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 eyes directly to the brain's hypothalamus to affect the various 2 functions within the body. Color healing has been used to treat 3 the chakra through various treatment methods.
4 Color stimulates and works synergistically with all of the senses, symbolizes abstract concepts and thoughts, express fantasy 6 or wish fulfillment, recalls another time or place and produces an 7 aesthetic or emotional response. Color impacts mood, appetite, and 8 energy level. Colors are perceived by the eyes and absorbed by the 9 body through the skin and the optic nerves. They penetrate into the brain where they are processed and utilized by the 11 hypothalamus, the system or region of the brain that links the 12 central nervous system to the hormonal system. The light that 13 penetrates the brain at various wavelengths triggers a complex 14 biochemical transfer within the body, through the endocrine system.
When hormones and enzymes are exposed to colored light, they 16 themselves undergo changes in color and begin to have different 17 effects on the body. This is why people who are subjected to 18 prolonged periods of darkness, during which their body cannot 19 absorb any light/color, suffer from vitamin deficiencies, hormonal disorders, disorders of the normal body cycles - particularly sleep 21 and metabolic functions and depression. The balance of light/color 22 is crucial to a person's health and wellness.
23 Different colors affect the amount and type of light that 24 affects us. Specifically, color, in the form of light energy, enters not only through the eyes, but also the skin, which people C:\DOCUments and Settings\mro\i,ocal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-05 Patent Application FILED.doc 1 do not consciously register. It permeates through the aura, 2 triggering chemical and hormonal changes within the body that 3 affect health and wellness. Exposure to certain colors can 4 therefore adjust a person's intake of light energy, in order to balance the body. Even the colorblind or the visually impaired can 6 be positively affected by color healing.
7 White or full-spectrum light is also now being used in the 8 treatment of cancers, SAD (seasonal affective disorder -- so called 9 "winter depression"), anorexia, bulimia nervosa, insomnia, jet lag, shift-working, alcohol and drug dependency, and to reduce overall 11 levels of medication.
12 Blue light, found to be successful in the treatment of 13 neonatal jaundice, has also been shown to be effective in the 14 treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In studies, subjects exposed to blue light for variable periods of time experienced a significant 16 degree of pain relief. It was concluded that the pain reduction 17 was directly related both to the blue light, and the length of 18 exposure to it. Blue light is also used in healing injured tissue 19 and preventing scar tissue, in the treatment of cancers and nonmalignant tumors, as well as skin and lung conditions.
21 Recent studies have found that light need not be seen to be 22 beneficial to the psyche. Until recently, the function of light 23 was thought to relate largely to sight. However, it is now well 24 established that color light need not actually be seen for it to have definite psychological and physiological effects.

C:\Documents and Settings\mro\LOCal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 Accordingly, various implementations of the method of the present 2 invention could employ monochromatic light.
3 It has been shown that cells within the human body communicate 4 via small packets of light, also referred to as "bio-photons."
Thus, even though people are physical beings, internally, they are 6 comprised of networks of light and energy that coordinate and 7 orchestrate their physical form. What can happen, however, is that 8 these internal communication networks can become blocked or shut 9 down as the result of physical, mental, and/or emotional trauma.
When the body is out of balance, it is vulnerable for the onset of 11 a variety of disease to occur. Color healing affects a person's 12 internal light "network," i.e. "reconnects" the network, thereby 13 enabling a person to function at full potential. Within the 14 visible light spectrum are all of the colors of the rainbow. The internal light network may be reconnected by introducing various 16 colors of light, each color having its own frequency or energy 17 vibration pattern, into the body, which then resonate with the 18 current pattern of energy which exists within the body. The 19 intelligence and wisdom in a person's body and mind perform the more intricate functions of reconnecting and rewiring.
21 Modern color healing uses these natural pathways to open 22 blocked energy channels and dispel energy imbalances. Applications 23 of specific color light travel the meridian system at light speed 24 with information-specific particles to replenish the natural energy and restore cellular balance. Each color has a different frequency C:\Documents and Settings\mro\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 or energy vibration pattern, as noted above, and is useful for 2 specific and different therapeutic uses. For instance, blue is 3 cool and sedating, red is hot and stimulating, orange is warm and 4 encouraging, and green is balancing and calming.
Colored light bulbs or white light through colored gel film or 6 paper provide an economical means of implementing color healing.
7 However, this should be implemented using a minimum light bulb 8 energy of 25-watts, at a distance from the subject in the range of 9 about twelve inches to eighteen inches from the body. Increased light bulb energy output can be used to permit a corresponding 11 increase in the distance of the light source from the subject.
12 Color healing can be used proactively to diffuse energy 13 blockages before they lead to health problems, or it can be used as 14 a post-acupuncture maintenance regime to keep recovered patients "in the pink." Holistic color light therapy does not treat 16 specific muscles or organs, but addresses the integrated body, mind 17 and spirit through its energy field to re-establish balance and 18 harmony. Color light replenishes the body's natural energy and 19 gently restores balance in all cells. As a noninvasive and nontoxic healing modality, acupuncturists can even administer color 21 light therapy to individuals who are phobic about needles and 22 thereby resistant to submitting to a full course of acupuncture 23 treatments.
24 Within a person's body, the organs, muscles, cells and nerves all have a level of vibration. When the body becomes out of C:\DOCUments and Settings\mzo\Loca2 Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3D\1911-OS Patent Application FILED.doc 1 balance, disease occurs. Each color has its own frequency and 2 vibration. Through extensive research, we know that color and 3 light will help bring the physical and emotional systems into 4 balance. Asian medicine teaches that the body has meridians carrying energy throughout the system, connecting with each major 6 organ. When blockages in these meridians happen, disease follows.
7 The Chinese use acupuncture needles to remove blockages in the 8 meridians. Color lighting can be used in the same way and is 9 frequently more powerful, quicker and without the discomfort produced by needles.
11 Red, yellow, and orange are considered warmer colors, and they 12 denote extroversion, expressiveness, practicality and vitality.
13 Blue and green are considered cooler colors, and they generally 14 denote more sensitivity, peacefulness, as well as, an inward and intuitive nature. Violet, indigo, and white colors symbolize a 16 vivid imagination, magic and a spiritual orientation toward life.
