Abstract

A hairbrush of a peculiar shape is described. The hairbrush comprises a brush head which is securely fastened to a handle at one end of the brush head. The brush head is shaped to have a concave shaped surface, which in itself is a surface of revolution. The opposing ends ends of the brush head are enlarged so that they tend to protrude when hair is wound around the brush head. The entire brush head is coated with a suitable thermochromic material (including bristles) which changes colour when the material reaches a predetermined temperature.
By virtue of the increased diameter of the ends of the brush, a user may quickly ascertain the change in colour of the material coating on the ends of the brush head even though a view of the surface at the center of the brush head is obscured by hair.

Description

HAIR BRUSH WITH ENLARGED ENDS ON BRUSH HEAD
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention is an improvement over U.S. Patent 5,911,226 issued June 15, 1999.
'The applicant has discovered that the hairbrush of the above invention may be improved by the addition of a concave brush surface having raised flanges "captive ends" at both ends of the brush head to prevent a client's hair from slipping off the end of the brush during a hair treatment operation. The raised ends of the brush head (which may take the shape of discs or the ends may be trumpet-shaped) are visually effective especially when the brush is coated with a thermochromic io material so that its surface changes colour with changing temperature, because the protruding ends of the brush head are seldom if ever obscured by the hair being treated.
If these protruding ends are also coated with a thermochromic material, the surface colour change will be immediately obvious to the Is hairdresser using the brush. Thus the thermochromic brush of the above patent may be substantially improved with the addition of ends which change colour with a corresponding change in temperature.

At the same time it has been found expedient to vary the length of the bristles so that the bristle ends terminate in the surface of a cylinder of constant diameter even though the "roots" of the bristles lie in the surface of a concave cylinder. This makes the central part of the brush head s suitable for the storage of large amounts of hair where the bristles are longest!
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
This brush will improve the skill of the hair designer by the ease with which hair is now wound on the brush, and the colour changing ~o properties of the brush are difficult to obscure by hair wound on the brush. The end rings which are an integral part of the brush head will usually be visible to the hairdresser or hair designer even when copious amounts of hair are wound on the brush head. The end rings are an integral part of the brush so that the temperature indicating system is described in the above patent functions equally well when the rings too are coated with a suitable thermochromic material.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
~s Referring to the attached drawings, a hairbrush 10 is shown having a handle 12 and a head 14. Head 14 is attached to handle 10 by any convenient means. Head 14 is shown having a central bristle carrier 16 (in this instance, twisted wire) on which bristles 18 are trapped. The bristles such as 18 are made to protrude through apertures 20 in cylinder Zo 22. Cylinder 22 may be of any suitable material such as metal, wood or a plastic composition, but the surface of cylinder 22 is covered with a temperature-colour dependent heat sensitive material such as thermochromic material available from Matsui International Co. Inc. and sold under the trademark "Chromicolor" or New Prismatic Enterprise Co.
Ltd. thermochromic material. 11s stated previously, the bristles 18 may be coated with the same colour changing material.
Figure 3A shows a brush 30 having a handle 32 and a head 34.
Handle 32 is a conventional handle having head 34 securely attached thereto. (Head 34 may be detachable to permit heads such as those shown in Figures 3B and 3C to be attached to handle 32.) ~o Head 34 comprises an inner cylinder 36 securely mounted in the base 38 of head 34 and an outer member 40 also mounted in base 38 of head 34 so as to be coaxial with cylinder 36. The exterior surface of member 40 is a. surface of revolution which is concave at the center. The bristles 42 are preferably boar bristles and the bristles 44 are preferably of ~s a suitable plastic or nylon material and are firmly mounted in cylinder 36 and protrude through apertures such as 46 in member 40.
Figures 3B and 3C show a head similar to the one shown in Figure 3A except the size of the head is changed.
Figure 4 shows a sectional view of the brush head 34 of Figure 3A
zo showing the positive of cylinder 36 and surface member 40.

Figure 5 shows the brush 110 of this invention. Brush 110 is similar in construction to the brush illustrated in Figure 1 and comprises a brush handle 112 and brush head 114.
The brush head 114 is provided with a bristle carrier 116 (shown a more clearly in Figure 6) which is a twisted wire. The bristles 118 protrude through apertures 120 in cylinder 122. A pair of raised end rings 124 and 126 are formed at the remote ends of the brush head 114.
It is to be noted that although the surface of the brush head 114 is concave, that the external ends of the bristles 118 lie in the surface of a ~o cylinder of constant diameter.
The whole of the brush head comprising cylinder 122 and rings 124 and 126 are preferably coated with a thermochramic material similar to those materials previously described. Bristles 118 may also be coated with the above described thermochromic material.
Is Figures 7A, 7B and 7C describe variations of the brush head of this invention.
Figure 7 shows a brush 130 having a handle 132 and a brush head 134. Handle 130 is a conventional handle having brush head 134 securely attached thereto.
zo Brush head 134 comprises an inner cylinder 136 (see Figure 8) securely mounted in the base 138 of head 134 so as to be coaxial therewith. The exterior surface 140 of the brush head 134 is a concave surface of revolution. The bristles 144 protrude through apertures 14b of the surface member 140.
A pair of rings 148 and l 50 are formed at each end of the brush s head 134. As with the brush of Figure 5, the entire brush head 134 including rings 148 and 150 plus bristles 142 is coated with a suitable thermochromic material as previously described.
The brush heads shown in Figure 5, 7A-7C may have an opening in the head remote from the handle or the end may be closed as shown in ~o Figure S.
It will be found that if the surface 114 of the brush is concave and that the end rings such as 124 and 126 of Figure 5 which protrude, be coated with the colour changing thermochromic paint that the colour changing characteristics may be most advantageously utilized. This ~s assures that the hairdresser is always provided with a positive signal indicative of the temperature of the brush regardless of the quantity of hair wound on the center of the brush.
It has been found that the temperature ranges may be extended upwardly from the temperatures previously thought to be the limiting Zo factor. In fact some success has been achieved in stretching the upper limit to which successful hair treatment has been achieved up to about 175°F for short periods of time. Above 175°F, damage to the hair becomes a problem. It is therefore possible to use the thermochromic materials which change colour at 170-175°F and not cause unacceptable damage to the hair.
s Other changes will be obvious to those skilled in the art of hairdressing; however applicant wishes the scope of this invention to be defined in the following claims.
Manv modifications and other embodiments of the invention will come to the mind of one skilled in the art having the benefit of the to teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated drawings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the invention is not be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed, and that the modifications and embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the dependent claims.
