Description
I..'t,;SCIZIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS for Eric de Langavant's Boxset I3rams The Boxset Drams were designed to solve 3 inherent problems that all serious drummers face today.
1) The transporiatioa: problem : most conventional drums are voluminous, and requiY-e many hands (or trips) to move from one place to another. If one does not have a car or a van, one will have to be found, and the drurris usually take up most of the cargo space avaiiable. The problem is worse if the drummer wants to take his instrument on any kind c;f trip. TN4any drummers have to take their instruments with them on an airplane; tae;- traditionally have to pay extra to be able to take the most essential parts of their kit, and the drums require special boxes or packing to be secure.

2) The security p.-ol~,lem : There is no way a drummer can leave his traditional drum set somewhere (in a club, studio, or pal's house) and be sure that noone will play with it, or even steal parts of it.
3) The sound leve". problem : There are many ways a drummer can deaden the sound of liis instrumellt : the use of brushes is a traditional way. However, most traditional bar drums will still be heard by the neighbours no matter how much damping or insonorizat;on is used. The lowe: frequencies are very difficult to contain.
Most serious drumn>:;rs are therefore forced to rent a studio space to practice so as not to disturb t,l_e neJbhbors.
The cu=-rent sc3uticnv : Some drum manufacturizlg companies such as Yamaha and Arbiter iiave tried to remedy the transportation problem'with various formats.
The Yamaha << Hipgig is a complete drumset t~hat fits into a two part ~
(hinged) conventional bass drum. This is a good sounding conventional drumset, but it is still quite voiuminous, it :s not secure (anyone can see that it is a drumset, and there is nothing to stop them from touching it), and it is as loud as any other drumsset.
T :-:e 1-,r'citer :< Flat is a drum set that is basically a collection of skins stretched on hoops; these drun s have no shell. 'I'his drum set can be packed into its canvas carrying bag and transported quite easily. But one cannot leave it unattended for there is no way to really lock it (a canvas bag can easily be cut). And the sound is lacking in the warmth rhat awood.ein shell will produce.
One solution to the sound level problem has been the emergence of electronic drara;. Tl.eir volurne can be adjusted ieven cut out) as you would an electric guitar, but the sound is dif:erent than tliat of a cog,ventional set and most importantly, the playing feel of an electronic drum is very different from that of a conventional set. Also, the electronic drum set is not designed for easy transportation., and is even more vulnerable to rnis;,andiing.
7'lae t< 13oxset solution : What has been developed by Eric de Langavant is a conventional drumset that fits inside a rigid wooden canying box. The carrying box is an integral pas-t of the instrument (it serves as the bass drurn's resonance case when the instrument is played), and the Box can be locked up securely. It can even be easily chained to a wall i-F so desired.
The druin slie;ls used were designed to give the deepest, warmest tones possible coi:sidering the sniuls sizes used. The result is a warm, deep sound from very small druir.:S ... and tlieir volurne is also reduced. The result is a great sounding conventional drum th~~_t i,s suitable for any small to naid-sized roonl. A large room will require amplification for tlie bass drum speci ica.lly (there is a trap door in the bass druni section to accornodate a microphone).

Specifications of the Iloxset di<arrss : Size - 20 inches x 16 inches x 11 inches;
Weight :,~ lbs. packed. The box consists of two halves that can be locked shut. The right half contains the Bass Drum panel, its resonance case, the microphone trap door, and storage space for the cymbals, the staare drum and some of the hardware.
*(*box spurs, torn liolder + s.y nlbal arm). The left half contains the high hat, storage space for the 2 tcnis and some of the 1lardware. Every thing has been designed to weigh the least pcssisbie, and in such a way that it will all fit inside the box. See Annex 1:
color pictures oY all an~;tes (Box + hardware), open & closed. Annex 2 : teclmical, explicative drav,in,s oi the box and of the hardwax e. (Facultative : Construction of drum shells :
The shel's are made on 1nolds with2 different types of wood. The 3 inner plys are marlogany and the 3 outer plys are maple. The shells are made of only 6 or 7 plys in all, and are 4 inrn tl:icit (very thin)_ There are 2 bcatures of the Box set that I would like to have in the patents :
1) the fact that all the druni's components fit into one carry-all wooden box that also serves as tl?e bass drurriresonance casu when the instrument is played. aiw 2) The fact that rn--st of the hardware has been given a dual function, such as the tom holders double as cymbal arnns, and the box spur mounts double as the box's locking mechanisni.
