Abstract

A home automation control system having a web interface developed using vector-based animation technology for monitoring and controlling the status of the electrical devices that is customizable and easily upgradeable is disclosed herein. The home automation control system includes an embedded web server that provides two-way communication between a client computer/monitor and a remote or local home automation network that includes a variety of home electrical devices. The web server is enabled to receive status signals from home appliances coupled to the automation system and display the status of each device on the client computer/monitor locally or across the World Wide Web.
The web server is enabled to receive command signals from the controllers connected to the client computer/monitor and provide these command signals to the home automation system for controlling of electrical home devices.

Claims (27)

1. A method for providing a centralized user interface in a network for managing a plurality of electrical home devices, the process comprising the steps of displaying a graphical user interface of a web server at a client terminal, the graphical interface including a plurality of interface components developed in vector-based software animation technology for enabling a user to select at least one of the electrical home devices to be in communication with;
receiving information input by the user indicating a command for monitoring and control of the selected electrical home devices;
generating commands and associated parameters based on the input information for instructing the selected electrical home devices;
transmitting the commands and the associated parameters to the selected home devices; and selectively generating a notification of the status of the selected electrical home devices to be displayed in the graphical user interface at the client terminal.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Flash.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Shockwave.
4. A home automation system for enabling users to monitor and control a plurality of electrical home devices, comprising:
an embedded web server having a graphical user interface developed using vector-based software animation technology to implement a selected object from the group consisting of widgets, icons, navigation buttons and formatted objects representative of the plurality of electrical home devices;
a router coupled to the embedded web server; and at least one client interface coupled to the router for inputting user actuated commands to monitor and control the plurality of electrical home devices.
5. The home automation system of claim 4, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Flash.
6. The home automation system of claim 4, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Shockwave.
7. The home automation system of claim 2, the client interface is a personal computer.
8. The home automation system of claim 2, the client interface is a telecommunications transceiver.
9. The home automation system of claim 4, wherein the plurality of electrical home devices may be arranged on the graphical user interface as groupings representative of a particular room or area in a residence.
10. The home automation system of claim 4, wherein each user of the home automation system may select a subset of the plurality of electrical home devices to be displayed as a favorite of the user on the graphical user interface.
11. The home automation system of claim 4, wherein the plurality of electrical home devices may be arranged in scenes on the graphical user interface, whereby the user may alter the various settings of the arranged electrical home devices.
12. The home automation system of claim 4, further comprising:
a network interface coupled to the router;
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) coupled between the network interface and a World Wide Web Network; and at least one remote client interface coupled to the World Wide Web Network for inputting user actuated commands to monitor and control the plurality of electrical home devices.
13. The home automation system of claim 12, wherein the network interface is a broadband modem.
14. The home automation system of claim 12, wherein the network interface is a cable service provider.
15. The home automation system of claim 12, the network interface is a satellite service provider.
16. The home automation system of claim 3, the remote client interface is a personal computer.
17. The home automation system of claim 3, the remote client interface is a telecommunications transceiver.
18. A home automation system comprising:
a web server;
a device interface coupled between an electronic home device and the web server;
a network interface coupled between the web-server and a network; and a client interface coupled to the network interface to provide two-way communication within the home automation system to control electrical devices;

wherein the web server provides a graphical user interface at the client interface, the graphical user interface developed using vector-based software animation technology for monitoring and controlling the status of the electrical devices.
19. The home automation system of claim 18, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Flash.
20. The home automation system of claim 18, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Shockwave.
21. The home automation system of claim 18, wherein the network includes a local area network.
22. The home automation system of claim 18, wherein the network includes a wide area network.
23. The home automation system of claim 18, wherein the network includes the World Wide Web.
24. A home automation system comprising:
a router/switch;
a network interface coupled to the router/switch;
a user interface coupled to the router/switch; and a home control embedded web server coupled to the router/switch coupled to one or more home appliance interfaces, wherein the web server provides two-way communication between the home appliance interfaces and at least one of the user interface and the network interface.
25. The system of claim 24, wherein the web server provides a graphical user interface at the user interface, the graphical user interface developed using vector-based software animation technology.
26. The system of claim 24, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Flash.
27. The system of claim 24, wherein vector-based software animation technology is Shockwave.
