Abstract
A distributed wireless online access system comprises a plurality wireless units (110) forming primary wireless network, and plurality of secondary wireless units (160). Each primary unit may comprise a transmitter, receiver, and programmed processor for routing data packets. Each secondary unit may comprise a transmitter, receiver, and programmed processor for receiving, processing, generating, and transmitting data packets. A portal unit (170) may provide a connection or link between the primary wireless network and external communications system (such as Internet), thereby providing access to the external communications network to all primary and secondary wireless units. A provider of wireless online access may collect access fees from subscribers having primary and/or secondary wireless units and may pay provider revenue out to subscribers having primary wireless units. One or more primary units may be mobile, resulting in a transient primary wireless network having a dynamically varying network topology.
Claims (31)
1.~A method for providing wireless online access, comprising:
establishing a wireless access signal space wherein a wireless communications link is established between a secondary wireless unit and at least one primary wireless unit, thereby providing a corresponding secondary subscriber with online access by data packet transmission between the primary wireless unit and the secondary wireless unit; and receiving, from an online access provider, a credited revenue amount in return for providing online access for the secondary subscriber, the credited revenue amount being calculated by a billing unit including a processor programmed therefor.
establishing a wireless access signal space wherein a wireless communications link is established between a secondary wireless unit and at least one primary wireless unit, thereby providing a corresponding secondary subscriber with online access by data packet transmission between the primary wireless unit and the secondary wireless unit; and receiving, from an online access provider, a credited revenue amount in return for providing online access for the secondary subscriber, the credited revenue amount being calculated by a billing unit including a processor programmed therefor.
2. ~The method of Claim 1, the billing unit processor being programmed for calculating an access fee amount to be charged, by an online access provider, for each primary wireless unit.
3. ~The method of Claim 7, the billing unit processor being programmed for calculating an access fee amount to be charged, by an online access provider, to at least one secondary subscriber.
4. ~The method of Claim 1, the billing unit processor being programmed for:
receiving reported network data from the primary wireless unit; and calculating the revenue amount to be credited based at least in part on the reported~
network data.

5. ~The method of Claim 4,wherein the billing unit includes a wireless receiver for receiving reported network data.
6. ~The method of Claim 4, the credited revenue amount being based at least in part on volume of in-transit data packets received by and re-transmitted by the primary wireless unit, the volume being included in the reported network data.
7. ~The method of Claim 4, the credited revenue amount being based at least in part on at least one of:
a number of other primary wireless units within the maximum transmission range of the primary wireless unit and for which the primary wireless unit is within the maximum transmission range thereof, the number of such other primary wireless units being included in the reported network data; and a number of secondary wireless units within the maximum transmission range of the primary wireless unit and for which the primary wireless unit is within the maximum transmission range thereof, the number of such secondary units being included in the reported network data.

primary subscribers and other secondary subscribers to participate in the wireless online access system, the credited revenue amount being based at least in part on at least one of:~
a number of other primary subscribers recruited to participate in the distributed wireless online access system; and a number of secondary subscribers recruited to participate in the distributed wireless online access system, each secondary wireless unit corresponding to a secondary subscriber.

a number of other primary subscribers recruited to participate in the distributed wireless online access system; and a number of secondary subscribers recruited to participate in the distributed wireless online access system, each secondary wireless unit corresponding to a secondary subscriber.
9. ~The method of Claim 1, at least one primary wireless unit also being a secondary wireless unit.
10. The method of Claim 1, at least one of authentication and online access being provided through a portal unit for connecting to an external communications system, the portal unit including:
a link to the external communications system for receiving a data packet transmitted therefrom and transmitting a data packet thereto; and a link to at least one primary wireless unit for receiving a data packet transmitted therefrom and transmitting a data packet thereto.

11. ~The method of Claim 10, the external communications system comprising the Internet.
12. ~The method of Claim 10, the link to the external communications system comprising a wired link.
13. ~The method of Claim 10, the link to the external communications system comprising a wireless link.
14. ~The method of Claim 13, the link to the external communications system including at least one other primary wireless unit.
15. ~The method of Claim 10, the link to the primary wireless unit comprising a~

19. ~The method of Claim 1, at least one wireless unit of the primary and secondary wireless units being an unlicensed wireless device in legal compliance with government regulations applicable at the location thereof.
20. ~The method of Claim 19, at least one wireless unit of the primary and secondary wireless units conforming to an IEEE 802.11 standard.
21. ~The method of Claim 1, at least one primary wireless unit being a mobile wireless unit.
22. ~The method of Claim 1, at least one secondary wireless unit being a mobile wireless unit.
23. ~The method of Claim 1, wherein an administration unit operated by an online access provider controls transmission of a data packet through a primary wireless network among a plurality of primary wireless units and a plurality of secondary units, the administration unit comprising:
a wireless transmitter for transmitting queries and commands to at least one wireless unit from among the plurality of primary wireless units and the plurality of secondary wireless units;
a wireless receiver for receiving at least one of wireless unit status data, primary wireless network status data, data packet transmission data, and command acknowledgements from at least one wireless unit from among the plurality of primary wireless units and the plurality of secondary wireless units; and a programmed processor for generating the commands and queries and for processing at least one of wireless unit status data, primary wireless network status data, data packet transmission data, and command acknowledgements.
a wireless transmitter for transmitting queries and commands to at least one wireless unit from among the plurality of primary wireless units and the plurality of secondary wireless units;
a wireless receiver for receiving at least one of wireless unit status data, primary wireless network status data, data packet transmission data, and command acknowledgements from at least one wireless unit from among the plurality of primary wireless units and the plurality of secondary wireless units; and a programmed processor for generating the commands and queries and for processing at least one of wireless unit status data, primary wireless network status data, data packet transmission data, and command acknowledgements.

The method of Claim 23, wherein the administration unit processor, in response to at least one of received wireless unit status data, received primary wireless network status data, received data packet transmission data, and received command acknowledgements, may generate primary wireless network data packet traffic density data, thereby enabling addition of a new primary wireless unit to the primary wireless network for reducing localized data packet traffic density in a portion of the primary wireless network.
25. The method of Claim 23, wherein the administration unit processor may generate primary wireless network geographic coverage data, thereby enabling addition of a new primary wireless unit for covering a geographic area not adequately covered by one of the plurality of primary wireless units.

The method of Claim 1, wherein a mobile secondary wireless unit may move beyond the maximum transmission range of a first primary wireless unit and within the maximum transmission range of a second primary wireless unit, thereby changing a topology of links between the secondary wireless unit and the primary wireless network.
27. The method of Claim 1, wherein a mobile primary wireless unit is mounted on a motor vehicle.
28. The method of Claim 27, wherein the mobile primary wireless unit includes a directional transmitter directed substantially parallel to the direction of travel of the motor vehicle.
29. The method of Claim 27, wherein at least one other primary wireless unit may be positioned near a roadway traversed by the motor vehicle.
30. The method of Claim 27, wherein multiple wireless units among the pluralities of primary and secondary wireless units are mobile wireless units mounted on motor vehicles, thereby enabling formation of a transient wireless online access system encompassing a portion of a length of a roadway traversed by the motor vehicles.
31. The method of Claim 30, the transient wireless online access system may provide a network path for data packet transmission from a primary wireless unit at a first fixed location to a primary wireless unit at a second fixed location.
