Description

TITLE: MULTI-PURPOSE GOLF DEVICE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to a multi-purpose device for golfers and in particular to a device to allow a golfer to place a golf ball on a tee without bending.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
During a game of golf or when practicing on a driving range, a golfer bends over many times to place a golf ball on a tee or to retrieve a golf ball from the cup.
On a driving range, a golfer will typically strike in excess of 100 golf balls. Prior to striking the golf ball, the golfer must place the ball on the tee which requires the golfer to bend over. This can be very tiring especially for older golfers or those with weak back muscles.
There have been many devices proposed to allow a ball to be placed on a tee. Examples of such devices are shown in U.S. Patents 5,772,533; 2,943,856; 4,714,250 and 4,313,604 amongst others. U.S. Patent 5,772,533 is exemplary of such devices. This patent describes a light weight golf ball teeing device having a housing which positions the golf ball over the golf tee. A delayed urging means is used to clamp the ball and tee to the housing. While the tee is inserted into the ground, the delayed urging means compresses and rebounds slowly releasing the ball and tee from the device. Gripping fingers are positioned on top of the housing to allow the device to be attached to a golf club grip.
U.S. Patent 2,943,856 issued July 5, 1960 to Eimerman also describes a device for placing a golf ball and tee in the ground. The device includes a holder adapted to receive a golf ball and equipped with a set openable and closeable arms for supportingly engaging a golf tee placed under the ball when the arms are in a closed positions. The device is adapted for attachment to the golf club grip and is provided with a means such that, when it is pressed down on the ground, the arms automatically open and disengage from the ball allowing the ball and tee to remain on the ground. U.S. Patents 4,714,250 issued December 22, 1987 to Henthorn and 4,313,604 issued February 2, 1982 to Baxter both describe self-contained devices for setting a golf ball and tee in the ground.
In addition to the above devices, numerous devices attachable to the end of a putter for retrieving a ball from a playing surface or a cup are known such as are shown in U.S. Patents 5,690,558; 6,692,374; 5,004,240;
4,787,632; 3,462,184 and 3,922,026 among others.
For example, U.S. Patent 5,690,558 describes a golf ball retriever which is attached to the handle of a golf putter and used to retrieve a golf ball from a playing surface and to also allow deposit of a golf ball marker in place of the golf ball. The apparatus includes a fork which engages the underside of the golf ball and once the ball is cradled in the fork, the device is operated to remove the golf ball and the place the ball marker in its place.
U.S. Patent 4,787,632 issued November 29, 1988 to Nigrelli and Grau describes a golf accessory for retrieving golf balls, repairing divots and placing ball markers. The device which is attachable to the end of a putter includes a planar member having a ball holder section formed on one side and a flexible ball guide section on the opposite side for biasing the ball into the holder. The guide section includes a pair of taper tines for repairing divots and placing golf ball markers on the green.
Devices for placing a golf ball on a tee at a driving range are also known as illustrated in U.S. Patents 4,507,881; 5,407,194; 5,651,742 and 6,159,108 among others.
The devices shown in U.S. Patents 4,507,881 issued April 2, 1985 to Fossa and 5,651,742 issued July 29, 1997 to Dixon are attached to the toe of a golf shoe and allow a ball to be picked up and placed on the tee. These devices require the golfer to use his foot and leg to maneuver the ball which may cause tiring of these muscles due to the unnatural movements required to place the ball. U.S. Patent 5,407,194 describes a stand alone device for scooping up and depositing a golf ball on a permanent golf range tee. U.S. Patent 6,159,108 issued December 12, 2000 to de la Pena describes an apparatus for placement of a golf ball onto a tee which has a triangular shaped top plate and attached back plate disposed at an angle with respect to the top plate.
Adhesive tape or a hoop and loop fastener is utilized to attach the top and back plates to the top and back surface of the golf club. A neck having a pair of arcuate forks attached thereto extending away from the top plate are provided such that the forks can be used to scoop up the golf ball and then maneuver the clubs so as to place the ball on the tee.
There still remains the need for an easy to use device to place a golf ball on a tee at a driving range.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to an apparatus to allow a golfer to place a golf ball on a tee at a driving range. The apparatus comprises a generally planar member having an opening at a first end of a shape to retain a golf ball within the opening. The device includes a pin extending generally perpendicularly from a second end of the device, the pin being capable of being insertable into a hole on the end of a golf club grip and the pin being shaped to reduce the possibility of rotation of the device during use.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
A preferred embodiment of the multi-purpose device of the present invention is illustrated in the figures generally indicated by the numeral 10. The device of the present invention is utilized in one aspect to allow a golfer to place a golf ball on a tee at a driving range. As illustrated in the figures, the device 10 is a generally planar member having an opening 12 at a first end 14.
The opening 12 is defined by two arms 16 which curve around to define an interior shape 18 of more than half of a circumference of a circle. The diameter of the interior shape 18 of the circle is less than the diameter of a golf ball 20 which generally is 1.68 inches.
Preferably, in order for the device 10 to be utilized to easily pick up a golf ball 20, as will be described further below, the diameter of the circular interior 18 of the opening 12 is generally on the order of about 1.5 inches and the space across the throat 22 of the opening 12 is generally on the order of 1.2 to 1.25 inches. A
second end 24 of the device 10 is provided with a pin 26 extending generally perpendicular thereto. The pin 26 is adapted to be inserted into a hole 28 on the end of a golf club grip 30. In order to prevent rotation of the device 10, it is preferred that the pin 26 is shaped to reduce the possibility of rotation of the device 10 during the use in picking up a golf ball 20. This may be accomplished by providing the pin 26 as a non-circular cross section such as an oval, triangular or square.
Most preferably, the cross section of the pin 26 is square such that it will not easily rotate when inserted into the hole 28 at the end of the golf club 30.
In a particularly preferred embodiment as illustrated in the figures, the device 10 is a two-piece device with the first piece 32 being the generally planar body with the opening 12 at the first end 14. The second end 24 of the planar body is provided with a generally circular recess 34 with a hole 36 through the recess 34 shaped to accommodate the pin 26. The second piece 38 of the device 10 is the pin 26 attached to a generally circular top 40 sized to fit completely within the recess 34 of the second end 24 of the device 10 when the pin 26 is placed in the hole 36 and the second piece 38 pushed downwardly. This second piece 38 may also be utilized as a ball marker for marking the location of the ball 20 on a green during a round of golf. Owing to the shape of the pin 26 with its preferred square cross section it may be inserted in the hole of a putter's handle grip and will be retained there until needed. The pin 26 is preferably sized slightly larger than the hole 28 in the end of the grip 30 such that it will not fall out when the putter is carried in the bag of the golfer.
To utilize the device 10 in one of its intended functions of picking up a golf ball 20, the second piece 38 of the device 10 is attached to the first piece 32 by pushing the pin 26 through the hole 36 and pushing it downwardly until the top 40 of the second piece 38 is contained within the recess 34 on the second end 24 of the generally planar body.
To utilize the device 10 of the present invention, the pin 26 is pushed into the hole 28 at the top of a club 30 such as a driver. When it is desired to place a ball 20 on the tee 42 on the driving range, the club 30 is reversed, the throat 32 slid under the ball 20 and the ball 20 lifted up. The ball 20 is then placed on top of the tee 42. As the device 10 is lowered, the ball 20 remains on the tee 42 and the device 10 may easily be removed from its position surrounding the tee 42. The club 30 is then reversed into its regular orientation and used to strike the ball 20. In this way, it is a simple matter for the user to place the ball 20 onto the tee 42 without bending over and the user can operate the golf club 30 with the device 10 still attached and the device will not interfere with the swing of the golfer.
The device of the present invention also provides for 5 another use during a regular round of golf. It is quite common when a golfer is approaching the green with his shot that he will carry more than one club to the location of the green, typically a putter and a wedge.
When the golfer is striking a ball with one of the clubs, 10 the other club is typically laid on the ground. There are situations however, where the ground may be damp such as early in the morning when there may still be dew on the grass or during or after a rain. If the club is laid on the ground, the grip will become wet and may cause the club to twist in the golfer's hand when he is striking a ball. As illustrated in Figure 5, the device 10 of the present invention may be inserted into the end of the club 30 and utilized to keep the grip 30 above the ground 44. In this way the grip 30 will not pick up any moisture which may be present on the ground 44.
The device of the present invention may be constructed of any suitable material such as a plastic, metal, etc.
Preferably, the device is molded of a suitable thermoplastic or thermosetting material such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, etc. Most preferably, the device is molded of a suitable thermosetting material such as polystyrene.
The device of the present invention provides for an easy to use device to place a golf ball on a tee at a driving range such that the user does not have to break stance and rhythm and can avoid bending over. This will alleviate any potential problems with the back muscles that can arise from the golfer bending over and placing the ball on the tee manually. In addition, the device of the present invention also provides for other benefits to a golfer during a round of golf.

A device of the present invention as noted above is easy to use. It is also easy for the golfer to carry as it can be disassembled and carried in the golf bag or in the golfer's pocket. The device being small and compact is also easy to store in the golf bag. The device can be used by both left and right-handed golfers without any changes necessary to the device and it can also be used by golfers of any age. The device constructed of material such as polystyrene is weatherproof, light weight and durable.
Although various preferred embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated herein in detail it would be appreciated by those skilled in the art that variations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
