Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to pacifiers and more particularly to a pacifier which has means for emitting vapours which are beneficial to babies.
A baby who suffers a minor aliment such a sinus congestion or headache or who is fretful and unsettled may be treated by exposing the baby to vapours having beneficial properties. For example, some essential oils such as eucalyptus oil are known to help to clear congested sinus passages while vapours containing the scent of lavender helps to calm a fretful baby. Vapours which contain the scent of camomile is known to have a soothing, tranquilizing effect and the scent of peppermint is known to relieve headaches.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
I have invented a pacifier having a compartment for accommodation of a pad impregnated with a liquid which will emit vapours which are beneficial to a baby. The vapours are emitted in proximity to the baby's nose and mouth where they will do the most good.
Briefly, the pacifier of my invention has a nipple composed of soft, flexible material and a face plate having oppositely facing sides. The nipple is attached on one said side of the face plate while on the opposite side there is a compartment containing scent-emitting means.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The pacifier of the invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pacifier;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a lid for a compartment of the pacifier;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the pacifier.
Like numbers refer to like parts throughout the description of the drawings.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to Figures 1 and 3, the pacifier has a nipple 10 attached to one side of a face plate 12. The nipple is of conventional shape and is composed of soft, flexible material such as plastic or rubber. The side of the face plate which contacts a baby's face is concave, as is conventional.
On the side of the face plate opposite the nipple is a compartment 14. The compartment has an annular side wall 16 in which a number of vents 18 are formed. The compartment is closed by a cap or lid 20 having a head 22 and a ring 24. The ring frictionally engages the side wall 16 of the compartment when the cap is pressed against the open end of the compartment in order to secure the cap to the compartment. A number of vents 26 are formed in the cap.
On the bottom wall of the compartment is a circular piece of material 30 on which a removable pad 32 is seated. The surfaces of the material and pad in contact with each other are fastened to one another by means of Velcro, an adhesive or other means to prevent the pad from falling out of the compartment or otherwise exiting from it unless the pad is manually pulled out

2 of the compartment.
The pad may be filled or saturated with a number of dii~erent liquids. The liquids may be essential oils such as eucalyptus oil or they may be derived from camomile, lavender, peppermint and so on. Each of these liquids is said to have a beneficial effect such as healing, soothing and tranquilizing.
It will be understood, of course, that modifications can be made in the construction of the pacifier described above without departing from the scope and purview of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
