Abstract

Keeping in mind portability and ease of use, a portable wireless device, such as mobile phones and iPODs, carrying case solar charger is presented here. The present invention has two major parts, carrying case and a solar panel mounted on the case or the solar panel is attached to the carrying case via a flap. The flap could be detachable. The solar panel is connected to the charging battery via a DC connector which is then connected to a specific battery adaptor for portable device, such as mobile phones or iPOD. The battery adaptor can also be embedded into the carrying case. The present invention can charge any portable device in the market using standard battery adaptors. For the iPOD, the dock connector can be provided aside with the invention or can be built in to the case for easy connection. Furthermore the case or the solar panel may have a LCD or LED display to show the status of the charging device or the charger itself, also there could be a simple on/off switch. This solar panel can work as a separate charger for MP3 player, portable games and can charge any low power rechargeable batteries.

Description

Field Of invention The present invention generally relates to the solar battery charging system consisting of carrying case or any means to carry portable device with solar charger embedded outside the case. Portable device maybe any device, such as mobile phones, iPODs, MP3 Player, etc.
Background The solar cells have been used for over 20 years to convert sun light into electricity. Solar cells can be used to power portable devices and to charge various batteries. Commonly available solar chargers are small portable devices that come with several adapters to fit most cell phones and portable devices. They are able to provide power to electronic devices through direct sunlight or from artificial light (indoor light).
Although such devices are commonly available on the market but they have not been popular with the portable device users. The main shortfall is in the fact that user need to carry a separate device (solar charger) along with the portable device it is meant to charge. Each time portable device needs to be charged, it first needs to be connected to solar charger, and secondly needs to be placed in a sunny location, as shown in drawings of published application US24204971 A1 and CA 2409465.
In another words current solar chargers are not practical option to charge portable electronic while you walk/move or carry on with your daily activity, they simply clumsy The present invention is an exclusive design; it is designed with end users in mind. The users of portable devices, such as mobile phone or iPOD don't have to carry a separate charger with them while enjoying outdoor activities. The charger is embedded outside of the carry case, therefore when the user walks into a sunny/well lit location the embedded charger in the carry case begins to charge the portable device assuming the charger is on. The user can carry the "solar charger with carry case"via any means such as belt clip, arm strap, etc Accordingly, it is a principal objective of the invention is to provide a carrying case, or any means to hold the portable device, with solar charger embedded outside the carry case to charge any portable device. There are distinct advantages of this invention, first there is no need to carry any extra item since the carrying case goes along with the portable device; secondly the portable device may start charging as soon as it is placed in the case, under right conditions, such as proper lightning, the circuit is 'on' if there is any on/off switch connected.
Another objective of the invention is to place the solar cells embedded outside the carry case, permanently or in detachable form. In the detachable case the solar cells detached from the case could serve as independent solar charger.
Furthermore it is the objective of the invention to provide a connection from the solar cells to the portable device. Since there are many different power adapter required to fit many different portable devices in the market, in one scenario a specific battery adapter (example for iPOD) could be embedded inside the case. In the second scenario, the solar cells could provide a universal power outlet, to which any other specific adapter could be attached for any portable device and so forth.

The diagrams presented here provide further understanding of the present invention. A brief description of the figures is as follows:
Figure 1: Front view of one possible design of carrying case with flap attached Figure 2: Back view of one possible design of carrying case with flap attached Figure 3: Solar panel with DC connector output (part 10) Figure 4: Solar panel with embedded adapter (part 6) to connect to any portable device Figure 5: Solar with DC connector output at the bottom for any portable device Figure 6: Side view of the carrying case with flap attached Figure 7: A use ofportable carrying case solar charger, attached to the user via an arm band Figure 8: Another use of carrying case solar charger, clipped to the belt Figure 9: Prior Art, Patent application: US24204971 A1 Figure 10: Prior Art, Patent application: CA 2409465 The present invention is applicable to any portable device, such as mobile phones, PDA, iPOD, etc.
The main objective of this invention is to provide a better and convenient portable solar charging device for the portable devices, such as, mobile phones, iPOD, MP3 players, PDA and etc. example as illustrated in comprising of a carry case figure 1, part 3, 5, 14, solar panel part 1, electrical circuit, do connector part 10 and battery adaptors part 11.
A carry case defined as a means of carrying portable device. A solar panel part 1, to convert the light into energy (electric power), embedded outside of the carrying case part 3, 5, 14 by any means, such as Velcro or with adhesive or stitching, etc as illustrated in Figure 1.
An electrical circuit comprises of a protective circuit, protective circuit could comprise of a simple diode which can pass the charging current only in one direction or it could comprise of a comparator circuit which can compare the voltages of the battery and the solar panel and stop the charging if the battery is fully charged or if the voltage of the solar panel is less then the portable device battery.
The circuit could also include a simple on/oi~ switch to help user turn on/off the charging of the device. Furthermore the circuit may contain a means to display status, such as charging, connection etc. The display maybe made of any type such as LCD or LED, etc.
The electrical circuit provides the power transfer from solar panel to a DC
connector as illustrated in figure 3, part 10.
DC connector part 10 will provide the interface between the portable device and the solar panel.
Solar panel part 3 (flexible/non flexible) is protected from both sides by a protective transparent/translucent material (such as plastic) against wear and tear such as scratch or impact.
The above parts can also be attached to the carrying case by means of a flap example as shown in figure 3. This flap comprising ofthe solar panel (battery) could be attached by any means (fixed or detachable) to the carry case, example using Velcro or permanently for example by adhesive, stitching, etc on to the case.
As illustrated in figure 3 the detachable flap compromising of solar panel could stand alone and could be used to provide power to any device.
Below is the elaboration on two instances; music players and mobile phones;
specifically iPOD and mobile/ cellular phone.
