Abstract

A toolbox which is characterized by a barrel type rolling mechanism which is segregated into four to six separate compartments. The barrel type rolling mechanism will be used instead of a tool tray, which is common in most conventional toolboxes. The barrel type rolling mechanism can be lifted in and out of the toolbox. The barrel type rolling mechanism has two boss type axils which are molded to the round ends of the barrel type mechanism. These boss type axils are placed into two female receptacles which are molded into the inside of the end panels at each end of the toolbox.
The barrel type rolling mechanism will have a handle at one of the round ends and will be able to be carried and used as a portable device to carry its contents when the barrel type rolling mechanism is not inserted into the toolbox.

Description

Barrel Shaped Portable Toal Storing Device For Use In and Out of a Toolbox Field Of The Invention The present invention relates generally to a toolbox and organization of tools. More particularly, to a more efficient way of organizing the tools in the upper tray area Background of the Invention This invention relates to a efficient way of organizing hand tools in the upper tray area of a toolbox. In the common toolbox it is normal to have larger items such as hammers, hacksaws and pipe wrenches placed on the floor or bottom of a toolbox. Above, it is normal to have a tray which fits at the top of the toolbox. In the tray is placed smaller tools such as screwvdrivers, pliers and a tape measure. Often this tray becomes cluttered due to the fact that the tray has insufficient capacity. What then happens is the smaller tools get put in with the larger tools on the Moor or bottom part of the toolbox. Then things get very disorganized and hard to find. Also when the tray is outside the toolbox it is vulnerable to being kicked, or tipped over, scattering it's contents.
This has been dealt with by using separate drawers in a toolbox. This works well in a mechanic shop where the tradesman is in close proximity to his or her tools. The entire toolbox, can be accessed and the trays can stay in the toolbox housing. Also the toolbox can be left out at night because the shop is locked.
In a construction environment this is often not the case. Toolboxes are often locked in a steel gang box overnight in an area that is quite accessible to other trades or the public.
Other toolboxes and construction tools such as drills and chop saws are quite often thrown in the same gang box together. A
drawer type toolbox will take quite a beating and will not last long. It is therefore convenient to have the tray inclosed in the toolbox. Also more often than not, the tradesman is working some distance from where the tools are stored. It is inconvenient to take the entire toolbox with you. It is often convenient to just take a few larger tools and your small hand tools with you. What you would then do is take a smaller carry all box or tool bag to carry these items. You would then sift through the larger toolbox and put them in the smaller box or tool bag. This takes up valuable time and often you may forget some of the tools needed and take up more time to return to get them. Typical toolboxes are shown in the following U. S. patients:

Summary Of The Invention I have found that these disadvantages can be overcome. The tray in a conventional toolbox would be replaced by a barrel type rolling mechanism which has four to six separate pie shaped compartments.
The said barrel type rolling mechanism would be inserted into the said toolbox, by placing boss type axils which are molded to the round ends of tlae said barrel type rolling mechanism. The said axils are then placed into two female receptacles at which are molded on the inside of the end panels of the said toolbox. This said barrel type rolling mechanism would be inclosed in the toolbox and therefore would be provided mechanical protection. The said barrel type rolling mechanism would have greater capacity for smaller tools than that of a conventional tray, because of the four to six separate pie shaped compartments. Because of the said pie shaped compartments, the smaller tools could be organized into different groups such as screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers. The lids on the said pie shaped compartments would each be individually numbered and be of a different color so the tradesman could distinguish what was in each said pie shaped compartment. The said barrel type rolling mechanism could then be lifted out of the said female receptacles and larger tools placed underneath. Also the said barrel type rolling mechanism will have a handle at one end of the said round ends. The said barrel type rolling mechanism could then be carried to the place of work as a portable device, with all contents included. Also since the tools would be in the said pie shaped compartments and have lids, they would not be easily scattered when the said barrel type rolling mechanism is bumped or kicked.

Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is the frontal view of a typical toolbox.
Figure Z is an inside view of said toolbox showing the molded slots on the inside of the end panels, in which a barrel type rolling mechanism is placed.
Figure 3 is a separate view of the molded slots on the inside of the end panels of the toolbox. This is where the molded axils of the round ends of the barrel type rolling mechanism is placed.
Figure 4 shows how the barrel type rolling mechanism fits into the toolbox.
Figure 5 shows the barrel type railing mechanism.
Figure6 shows the handle at the hinged end of the barrel type rolling mechanism. It also shows a boss an each side of the bottom of the said handle where the bottom of the said handle will be anchored.
There is also a spring type clip which will hold the said handle in place at its top.
Figure 7 shows the said handle at the said hinged end of the said barrel type rolling mechanism, showing two male appendages at the bottom of the handle.
Figure 8 shows a grooved area, in which one of the male appendages on the handle will slide. The .
groove is molded into a boss type anchor, which will be molded into one of the round ends of the barrel type rolling mechanism.
The entire invention is intended to be of plastics, and would be made using plastic molds.
Detailed Description of the Embodiment In the particular advantageous embodiment of the invention, a barrel type rolling mechanism is placed in the upper area of a toolbox, where typically a tool tray would reside. The said barrel type rolling mechanism could be lifted in or out at will, allowing access to the bottom or floor of the toolbox, where larger tools are placed.
The t~lbox has two molded female receptacles l, which are located on the inside of the end panels of the toolbox. The said barrel type rolling mechanism has two boss axiis 2, which are molded in the round ends of the said barrel type rolling mechanism. The said boss type axils 2, will ft inside the said molded female receptacles 1. This will allow rotation of the said barrel type roiling mechanism, and also allow :he said barrel type rolling mechanism to be lifted in and out of the said toolbox The said barrel type oiling mechanism is divided into four or six separate compartments 7. Each said compartment 7, has a 5.
lid 5. The said lids 5 will be numbered 8, so they can be distinguished from each other. The said lids 5 could also all be of different colors. On one end of the said lids 5 will be hinges 6, so the said lids S can be pulled up to access the said separate compartment 7. On the opposite end of the lid will be a spring type clip 4. The said barrel type rolling mechanism will have two said round ends. On one of these said round ends will be the said boss type axil 2. Also on this same said round end will be rectangular receptacles 3, which will be of a higher profile of the said round end. In these said rectangular receptacles the said spring type Clips 4 will be placed, when the said lid 5 is closed and keep the contents in the said separate compartments 7. The said round end on the opposite end of the said barrel type rolling mechanism will also have the said boss type axil 2 along with the said hinges 6. On this said round end will be a handle 10. When the said barrel type rolling mechanism is placed in the said toolbox, the said handle 10 will be lying flat and secured. The said handle 10 is secured by two boss type anchors 11 which are molded to the said round end and have a slot 13 molded in the said boss type anchors l I . The said handle 10 has two male appendages 12 at the bottom on both sides of the handle 10. These said male appendages 12 will fit in the said slots 13 which are molded into the said boss type anchors 11 which are molded to the said round end. The upper end of the said handle 10 will fit under a spring type clip 9. When the said handle 10 is lying flat, the said male appendages 12 will be at the end of the said molded groovel3 of the said boss type anchor I 1. When the said barrel type rolling mechanism is lifted from the said toolbox, the said handle 10 can be unsecured from under the spring type clip 9. The said handle 10 could be pulled out as the said male appendages I2 wave along the said molded groove 13. When the said male appendages 12 reach the end of the said molded grove 13, the said handle IO will be pulled up so it is at a ninety degree angle from the said round end. The said male appendages 12 will then fit in the grooved notch 14 which is at the end of the said molded groove I 3.
The said barrel type rolling mechanism can now be carried to the place of work with all its contents in place.
