Abstract
A seal assembly for use in conjunction with a trocar assembly includes a sea l body adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing th e seal assembly. The seal assembly includes a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially perpendicular thereto. The seal body includes a proximal end a nd a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and t he distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle i s less than the second angle.
Claims (39)
1. A seal assembly for use in conjunction with a trocar assembly, comprising:
a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing the seal assembly, the seal assembly including a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially perpendicular thereto;
the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.
a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing the seal assembly, the seal assembly including a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially perpendicular thereto;
the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.
2. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the seal body includes a first section which lies in a first plane at the first angle and a second section which lies in a second plane at the second angle, wherein the first section and the second section extend from the proximal end of the seal body toward the distal end of the seal body and the first section is positioned adjacent the proximal end of the seal body and the second section is positioned adjacent the distal end of the seal body.
3. The seal assembly according to claim 2, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
4. The seal assembly according to claim 2, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
5. The seal assembly according to claim 2, wherein the second plane is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
6. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
7. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
8. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the second angle is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
9. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the seal assembly is a duckbill seal assembly.
10. The seal assembly according to claim 1, wherein the first angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
11. The seal assembly according to claim 1, further including a plurality of seal bodies, each of the seal bodies including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle, and wherein the distal ends of the seal bodies intersect to define an abutment face providing for the selective opening and closing of the seal assembly.
12. A seal assembly for use in conjunction with a trocar assembly, comprising:
a plurality of seal bodies adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing the seal assembly, the seal assembly including a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially parallel thereto;
each of the seal bodies including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle; and wherein the distal ends of the seal bodies intersect to define an abutment face providing for the selective opening and closing of the seal assembly.

each of the seal bodies including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle; and wherein the distal ends of the seal bodies intersect to define an abutment face providing for the selective opening and closing of the seal assembly.

The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein each of the seal bodies includes a first section which lies in a first plane at the first angle and a second section which lies in a second plane at the second angle, wherein the first section and the second section extend from the proximal end of the seal body toward the distal end of the seal body and the first section is positioned adjacent the proximal end of the seal body and the second section is positioned adjacent the distal end of the seal.

14. The seal assembly according to claim 13, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
15. The seal assembly according to claim 13, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
16. The seal assembly according to claim 13, wherein the second plane is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
17. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
18. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
19. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the second angle is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
20. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the seal assembly is a duckbill seal assembly.
21. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the first angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
22. The seal assembly according to claim 12, wherein the plurality of seal bodies consists of two seal bodies.
23. A trocar assembly, comprising:
a trocar cannula including a proximal end and distal end;
a trocar housing coupled to the proximal end of the trocar cannula for receiving and guiding an obturator through the trocar cannula, the trocar housing includes an open proximal end portion defining an opening provided with a proximal seal assembly and a distal seal assembly; and the distal seal assembly includes a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing the seal assembly, the seal assembly including a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially parallel thereto, the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.
a trocar cannula including a proximal end and distal end;
a trocar housing coupled to the proximal end of the trocar cannula for receiving and guiding an obturator through the trocar cannula, the trocar housing includes an open proximal end portion defining an opening provided with a proximal seal assembly and a distal seal assembly; and the distal seal assembly includes a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and substantially completely closing the seal assembly, the seal assembly including a longitudinal axis extending therethrough with a transverse plane substantially parallel thereto, the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.
24. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the seal body includes a first section which lies in a first plane at the first angle and a second section which lies in a second plane at the second angle, wherein the first section and the second section extend from the proximal end of the seal body toward the distal end of the seal body and the first section is positioned adjacent the proximal end of the seal body and the second section is positioned adjacent the distal end of the seal body.
25. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
26. The seal assembly according to claim 24, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
27. The seal assembly according to claim 24, wherein the second plane is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
28. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
29. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the first angle is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is oriented at between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
30. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the second angle is oriented between an angle of approximately 40 degrees and approximately 50 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
31. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the seal assembly is a duckbill seal assembly.
32. The seal assembly according to claim 23, wherein the first angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane and the second angle is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the transverse plane.
33. The seal assembly according to claim 25, further including a plurality of seal bodies, each of the seal bodies including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end making a first angle with respect to the transverse plane and the distal end making a second angle with respect to the transverse plane, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle, and wherein the distal ends of the seal bodies intersect to define an abutment face providing for the selective opening and closing of the seal assembly.
34. The trocar assembly according to claim 23, wherein the proximal seal assembly includes seal protectors.
35. The trocar assembly according to claim 23, wherein the proximal seal assembly includes a bellow facilitating radial movement of the proximal seal assembly.
36. A seal assembly for use in conjunction with a trocar assembly, comprising:
a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and closing the seal assembly, the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end lying in a first plane and an angle of the seal body relative to the first plane increases as the seal body extends from the proximal end to the distal end.
a seal body adapted for movement for selectively opening and closing the seal assembly, the seal body including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end lying in a first plane and an angle of the seal body relative to the first plane increases as the seal body extends from the proximal end to the distal end.
37. The seal assembly according to claim 36, wherein the seal body includes a first section which lies in the first plane and a second section which lies in a second plane, wherein the first section and the second section extend from the proximal end of the seal body toward the distal end of the seal body and the first section is positioned adjacent the proximal end of the seal body and the second section is positioned adjacent the distal end of the seal body.
38. The seal assembly according to claim 37, wherein the first plane is oriented relative to a transverse plane extending through the seal assembly at a first angle and the second plane is oriented relative to the transverse plane at a second angle, wherein the second angle is greater than the first angle.
39. The seal assembly according to claim 38, wherein the first plane is oriented at approximately a 30 degree angle relative to the transverse plane and the second plane is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle relative to the transverse plane.
