Abstract

A wireless communications device and method for providing sufficient coupling to a user of the device in the event that the user has a hearing aid. The device comprises a control unit for controlling the operation of the wireless communications device; a selection means connected to the control unit for selecting the coupling mode for the device; and, a processor connected to the control unit for processing a received signal with parameters selected according to the selected coupling mode.

Claims (31)

1. A wireless communications device for receiving a wireless speech signal and providing an output signal to a user of the device with sufficient coupling in the event that the user has a hearing aid, the device comprising:
a) a control unit for controlling the operation of the wireless communications device;
b) a selection means connected to the control unit for selecting the coupling mode for the device;
c) a communication subsystem connected to the control unit for receiving the wireless speech signal and producing a received signal;
d) a processor connected to the control unit for receiving the received signal and producing a processed received signal, the processor using parameters to generate the processed received signal according to the selected coupling mode; and, e) output means connected to the processor for receiving the processed received signal and generating the output signal.
2. The device of claim 1, wherein the coupling mode is one of microphone mode, telecoil mode and microphone/telecoil mode.
3. The device of claim 2, wherein the parameters include acoustic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone mode.
4. The device of claim 2, wherein the parameters include magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the telecoil mode.
5. The device of claim 2, wherein the parameters include acoustic/magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone/telecoil mode.
6. The device of claim 2, wherein the output means includes:

a) a data converter connected to the processor for receiving the processed received signal and producing an analog signal; and, b) an output stage connected to the data converter for receiving the analog signal and producing the output signal.
7. The device of claim 6, wherein the output stage includes a speaker.
8. The device of claim 6, wherein the output stage includes a speaker and an additional device telecoil, and the processor generates two processed received signals, each being provided to one of the speaker and the additional device telecoil by the data converter, and each being generated using parameters corresponding to one of the speaker and the additional device telecoil , the speaker being driven to generate the output signal in the microphone and microphone/telecoil modes.
9. The device of claim 8, wherein the additional device telecoil is also driven to generate the output signal in the microphone/telecoil mode.
10. The device of claim 8, wherein the additional device telecoil is driven to generate the output signal in the telecoil mode and the speaker is disabled.
11. The device of claim 6, wherein the output stage includes a switch means, a speaker and an additional device telecoil, the input of the switch means being connected to the data converter and the outputs of the switch means being connected to the speaker and the additional device telecoil coil, the speaker being driven to generate the output signal in the microphone and microphone/telecoil modes.
12. The device of claim 11, wherein the additional device telecoil is also driven to generate the output signal in the microphone/telecoil mode.
13. The device of claim 11, wherein the additional device telecoil is driven to generate the output signal in telecoil mode and the speaker is disabled.
14. A method for receiving a wireless speech signal with a device and providing an output signal to a user of the device with sufficient coupling in the event that the user has a hearing aid, the method comprising:
a) selecting the coupling mode for the device;
b) receiving the wireless speech signal and producing a received signal;
c) generating a processed received signal using parameters selected according to the selected coupling mode; and, d) generating the output signal based on the processed received signal.
15. The method of claim 14, wherein the coupling mode is one of microphone mode, telecoil mode and microphone/telecoil mode.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein the method includes providing acoustic digital signet processing equalization parameters as the parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone mode.
17. The method of claim 15, wherein the method includes providing magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters as the parameters when the coupling mode is the telecoil mode.
18. The method of claim 15, wherein the method includes providing acoustic/magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters as the parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone/telecoil mode.
19. The method of claim 14, wherein step (d) of the method includes:
a) receiving the processed received signal and producing an analog signal; and, b) receiving the analog signal and producing the output signal.
20. The method of claim 15, further comprising providing a speaker for generating the output signal.
21. The method of claim 15, further comprising providing a speaker and an additional device telecoil for generating the output signal, and step (c) includes generating two processed received signals, each being provided to one of the speaker and the additional device telecoil, and each being generated using parameters corresponding to one of the speaker and the additional device telecoil, the speaker being driven to generate the output signal in the microphone and microphone/telecoil modes.
22. The method of claim 21, further comprising also driving the additional device telecoil to generate the output signal in the microphone/telecoil mode.
23. The method of claim 21, further comprising driving the additional device telecoil to generate the output signal in telecoil mode and disabling the speaker.
24. The method of claim 15, further comprising providing a switch means, a speaker and an additional device telecoil for generating the output signal, and driving the speaker to generate the output signal in the microphone and microphone/telecoil modes.
25. The method of claim 24, further comprising also driving the additional device telecoil to generate the output signal in the microphone/telecoil mode.
26. The method of claim 24, further comprising driving the additional device telecoil to generate the output signal in the telecoil mode and disabling the speaker.
27. A wireless communications device with processing for providing sufficient coupling to a user of the device in the event that the user has a hearing aid, the device comprising:
a) a control unit for controlling the operation of the wireless communications device;
b) a selection means connected to the control unit for selecting the coupling mode for the device; and, c) a processor connected to the control unit for processing a received signal with parameters selected according to the selected coupling mode.
28. The device of claim 27, wherein the coupling mode is one of microphone mode, telecoil mode and microphone/telecoil mode.
29. The device of claim 28, wherein the parameters include acoustic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone mode.
30. The device of claim 28, wherein the parameters include magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the telecoil mode.
31. The device of claim 28, wherein the parameters include acoustic/magnetic digital signal processing equalization parameters when the coupling mode is the microphone/telecoil mode.
