Abstract
The present invention relates generally to door frames used in buildings, and more particularly to a door frame preferably comprising a traditional wooden interior and an extruded thermoplastic exterior component and brickmould which reduces maintenance requirements and costly on site service. The invention comprises a door jamb having an interior component for fastening to a framed in opening in a building and an exterior, multi-chambered component shaped to snugly overly a portion of the interior component. The exterior component comprises a receiving screwport for receiving a screw passing through a screwport in the interior component as well as a recessed pocket. Furthermore, the invention also comprises a snap-in fin and leg on the brickmould to attach the brickmould to the doorjamb. The invention also includes a corner brickmould assembly comprising a generally L-shaped reinforcement apiece which is contained within mating pieces of brickmould.
Claims (18)
1. A door frame system comprising:
a door jamb comprising an interior component for fastening to a framed in opening in a building and an exterior component, the exterior component shaped to overlie a portion of the interior component when the exterior component is placed over the interior component, a first end of the exterior component forming a door stop for a door that may be hingedly attached to the door jamb;
a brickmould with means to interconnect with the exterior component;
a first port passing from a frontside of the interior component to a backside of the interior component; and wherein the exterior component further comprises a second port for receiving a fastener passing through the first port and the second port by which the interior component and the exterior component are secured together.
a door jamb comprising an interior component for fastening to a framed in opening in a building and an exterior component, the exterior component shaped to overlie a portion of the interior component when the exterior component is placed over the interior component, a first end of the exterior component forming a door stop for a door that may be hingedly attached to the door jamb;
a brickmould with means to interconnect with the exterior component;
a first port passing from a frontside of the interior component to a backside of the interior component; and wherein the exterior component further comprises a second port for receiving a fastener passing through the first port and the second port by which the interior component and the exterior component are secured together.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the exterior component further comprises a plurality of interior chambers.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein the fastener is a screw.
4. The system of claim 1 wherein the interior component comprises a pocket to recess a fastener that is placed within the port.
5. The system of claim 1 wherein the brickmould further comprises a fin which interlocks with a receiving pocket on the exterior component, thereby fastening the brickmould to the interior component.
6. The system of claim 1 wherein the brickmould further comprises a leg which extends outwardly at an angle of 90 degrees to an interior face of the brickmould, the leg abutting against the exterior component.
7. The system of claim 6 wherein the leg provides for passage of a fastening device through the exterior component into the interior component, thereby fastening the brickmould to the interior component.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the brickmould comprises a plurality of interior chambers.
9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a gasket which runs along a length of the brickmould, thereby forming a seal when the brickmould is attached to the door jamb.
10. The system of claim 1 further comprising a groove on an exterior face of the brickmould.
11. The system of claim 1 wherein the interior component is made of wood.
12. The system of claim 1 wherein the interior component is selected from the group comprising wood composite and thermoplastic foam.
13. The system of claim 1 wherein the exterior component is comprised of an extruded thermoplastic material.
14. The system of claim 13 wherein the exterior component is PVC.
15. A brickmould assembly, with a corner portion comprising:
a first piece of brickmould comprising an end portion, said end portion adapted to mate with an end portion of a second piece of brickmould;
a generally L shaped reinforcement piece, the reinforcement piece adapted to fit within the first and second pieces of brickmould when the end portions of the first piece of brickmould and the second piece of brickmould are mating; and wherein the first and second pieces of brickmould further comprise a leg which extends outwardly at an angle of 90 degrees to an interior face of the brickmould assembly, the leg designed to abut an exterior component of a door jamb, enabling a fastening device to pass through the leg, the exterior component and an interior component of the door jamb to secure the first and second pieces of brickmould to the doorjamb when assembled.
a first piece of brickmould comprising an end portion, said end portion adapted to mate with an end portion of a second piece of brickmould;
a generally L shaped reinforcement piece, the reinforcement piece adapted to fit within the first and second pieces of brickmould when the end portions of the first piece of brickmould and the second piece of brickmould are mating; and wherein the first and second pieces of brickmould further comprise a leg which extends outwardly at an angle of 90 degrees to an interior face of the brickmould assembly, the leg designed to abut an exterior component of a door jamb, enabling a fastening device to pass through the leg, the exterior component and an interior component of the door jamb to secure the first and second pieces of brickmould to the doorjamb when assembled.
16 The brickmould assembly of claim 15 further comprising holes in the first and second brickmoulds which align with receiving holes in the reinforcement piece when the reinforcement piece is within the first and second pieces of brickmould and the end portions of the first and second brickmoulds are mating.
17. The brickmould assembly of claim 15 further comprising screws which pass through the holes in the first and second brickmoulds into the receiving holes in the reinforcement piece.
18. The system of claim 1 wherein a corner portion of the brickmould further comprises a first piece of brickmould comprising an end portion, said end portion adapted to mate with an end portion of a second piece of brickmould, and a generally L shaped reinforcement piece, the reinforcement piece adapted to fit within the first and second pieces of brickmould when the end portions of the first piece of brickmould and the second piece of brickmould are mating.
